The General "Computer Issues" Thread

Make sure your Firefox doesn't have any extension that can cause there pop-ups to occour. And what kind of pop-up blocker do you use? if its anything other than AdBlock Plus, then remove it and get that one.
Here is a lethal combo for all firefox users: (filterset.G is outdated and no longer supported)
Adblock Plus
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
Adblock Pluss: Element Hiding Helper
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4364
Adblock Plus Filter Uploader
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4042

With there 3, ads are history.

Thanks. I implemented all these, and now there's only one way to see if they really worked, the ol' wait-and-see method.

also as Shawn Hopkins said, do scan your PC with Ad-aware to make sure you dont have any offending software on your PC.

I tried firing up my laptop again... It brought up some odd screen on the 2nd start-up that looked like it was something Apple employees accessed or something.. It was a bunch of code or something that gave me two different choices on what to type in. One continued start-up, the other shut it back down. I typed in the one for continuing start-up, and it said it was an "illegal operation" or something like that. After a while, I gave up, shut down, and turned it back on, and it didn't happen again. It just did that freezing at a blue screen thing. What is going on with this thing?

Oh, great.
My laptop was being rather slow today, and occasionally needing to be restarted. Now, if I restart it, it will seem fine, then stay at the blue screen that it goes to normally before loading the desktop. This is getting really irritating. The battery is fine.
Mac, by the way.

It's still not working. :/

Ok, my mp3 player doesn't work for some reason.
  • I bought it a store across the street and then went home to put songs on it.
  • While it was synching, I minimized the screen to talk in the AIM chat I was in.
  • After 5-8 minutes, I brought the screen up again and it looked done so I took it out of my laptop's USB port.
  • I plugged the headphones in and pushed on but, I couldn't hear anything.
  • I then put it back in and WMP said "Please insert a blank player"
Extra info: The headphones I got with it broke when I lent them to my friend and I'm using the new ones she bought me.

This is a computer issues thread (and focused on PCs not even macs), not general electronics thread. Besides, you didn't even tell us the brand of the mp3 player. And most likely the problem is that you unplugged it from your computer without clicking safe remove icon at the start bar to disconnect the device before unplugging it. Its most likely broken now, so if you just bought it recently, take it back to the store and get a new one, and read the its manuals in the future, they tell you how to properly disconnect the mp3 player.

Somebody else posted about Ipod's so I thought it was okay. :/

Yeah, Nickrewind9 did

Ok then, I just hope they still take it even though I replaced the headphones.

Word 08? as far as I know the latest Office is Office 2007, not 08.

It is. I messed up. But on a tangential note, is there a simple way to reverse the printing order for everything that you print? Particularly Firefox? New computer, still working things out ;).

Office 2008 is the latest version for the Mac...

Well, what happens when you plug it back into the computer? You tried using WMP to sync it, but can you just go into My Computer?

I've been having some problems with my Windows XP lately.

I recently got the Sims 3 and while everything uploaded fine and there were no previous issues, after a couple of hours playing it the game suddenly froze and an error message popped up saying it needed to close. At first I thought it might have benn a faulty disc, but even more recently, I downloaded a demo for Portal and as soon as I get to any actual gameplay, it freezes for a second and gives me an error message and it closes the game.

Any possible explaination for this?

When I plugged it back in, it just said "Please insert a blank player". But meh, doesn't matter much though now, since I threw it out. (The store wouldn't take it back)

The most likely explanation is a video card driver issue. Try updating your drivers to the latest version and see if that makes a difference.

Alternatively, if you've recently made a change to your video card drivers, try rolling them back to an earlier version.

Or make a note of what specific error message you get and Google it.

First, you need to tell us the contents of the error massage, just saying "error massage" is to vague. Second, you need to give us some info on what is your current video card. It might not be powerful enough to run the games, second, it could be a virtual memory problem, thats why the game shuts off, thats where the contents of the error massage come in. Do not update any video drivers from card manufacturers if you are using a laptop, you should only update drivers from your laptop manufacturer. I would hold off on updating drivers anyhow unless you know if its a video driver issue. When you get an unexpected error massage, the last thing you want is to modify your drivers, because if the problem is not driver related, it can be much more difficult to diagnose it after you update drivers, and you can get different error massages that way making the problem worse.

Go to Start>Run and type dxdiag.exe go to the Display tab. There you should find the specs for your video card. Post here everything you see under Device. That should be enough info to see if you have enough system resources to run the game. And do write down any and all future error messages in their entirety. That would help a lot.

I took a couple of screen caps:

For the Computer.

And the error message.

Yep, just like I thought. You have Intel Accelarated Graphics, it's the bottom if the barrel of graphics cards. You do not have a strong enough graphics prossesor to run portal, and as I was also right about low memory, as the error massage indicates. Basically what happans is that you start the game and then your system runs low on virtual memory assosiated with video prossesong therefore the game shuts down. The Orange Box (Half-Life 2) is a very video intensive game, intel graphics just can't handle it because it's (most likely) onboard video. You only have 224MB of video RAM, that's way too low to play Portal. You need 1GB to be enough. You need a recent video card to play portal.

Ok, I don't know if this a problem or not, but I check on my Hard “C” Drive and I got 119 GB free space in my computer. Is that good?

Yes. I've got 202 GB. :anime:

Now it won't even begin starting up. It just stays at a black screen and makes the start-up tone.

Glad I got you to watch Stranger Things.

If I may recommend more media for you to check out, here's a starter:

You've mentioned that haven't read the original TMNT comics from Mirage Studios. Well, this video by YouTuber "Soundout12" gives a decent roadmap for where to start:

dmxx116 really likes to wish for people not to return back to so and so because their films didn't do so well. I don't agree with everything he says, though I agree on that Jared Leto shouldn't play Skeletor.
