The General "Computer Issues" Thread

Ever since I got wireless, my internet has been funny. It will be fine for 3 hours, then it will stop working, and I have to restart my computer for it to work again. About last week, my modem broke and I got a new one, and now my wireless will stop working after about 1/2 an hour! Is it my computer or the connection? (I'm still on DSL)

I googled some stuff that included holding down certain keys at start-up.

The Command+S one slightly worked. It began booting then took me to the weird black screen with a bunch of white text code and stuff. It said to type "exit" to continue booting. I did so, and it froze up..

Now, holding the power button down does NOTHING.
A little while ago, the fans would come on and the start-up tone would be heard.. Now, nothing.

It's either your wireless router that's the problem ( most likely) or your wireless PCI card that's acting up ( less likely). What are their brands ( your router and your wireless card)?

How to get wireless connection

I recently got a MacBook and have been trying to get wireless internet acess. I was told to get a router, which i did, but now the only way I can get internet acess is when the Macbook is connected to the router, connected to my main computer's modem.

Airport keeps offering these "screen name options" like aliza@2008, and asks for a password, which apparently is set, but I don't know what it is. Need help!

you bought a router? did you buy a wired or wireless router? your modem has to be connected to your router's "internet" port and your computer has to be connected to your "lan" ports or if you have wireless, do that. the other names you see that appear on your laptop are other wireless routers from your neighbors that you cant access because you dont know their password. If you did buy a wireless router, you need to configure the wireless signal by putting your name and password and by using wpa2 or at least wpa encryption or filter it by mac address, wep is way too weak.

My router is a Belken and came with ethernet cords. I did what you said, and as the instructions said. A wireless conncection stays on my computer but only for like 5 minutes.

Could someone be piggybacking off of his connection?

How do I get a wpa password? It asks for one, but I don't have one. Is there someplace in settings I need to set this up?

Try resetting your router. There should be a reset button there. Also you can try turning it off and back on. also, when you loose the connection, look at your router, see if the wireless is light is is going off.

not likely. If he cant use it, neither can someone else.

First, make sure its oyur connection you are trying to log in to thats asking for the password, and second, yes, you have to set it up and put the password there yourself. Belkin is a poor choice for a router, Linksys or D-Link are the ones you should have gotten, even NetGear is better than Belkin.

In my laptop my Volume, Network connection and Battery icons are missing from the desktop tray. and when I try to go to activate them they are greyed out. How do I fix this? (Windows Vista Premium. HP computer.)

For some reason, I cannot seem to right-click and copy and paste, etc. in Firefox right now. What gives?

router: D-Link WDR 1310
I don't know what my card is, my laptop came with wireless, and I wouldn't know where to find the card in my laptop.:o

But lately, my wireless has been on good behavior... strange...

Your wireless card is built in. When your connection fades, does your router wireless light goes off or it stays on all the time? Try connecting your laptop to your router directly, see if the problem still happens.

Linksys is what I've started using for my internet connection.

I think it's my computer. My cousin's computer can connect to wireless just fine, but not mine. Also, I have this problem where my computer won't shut off. I'll click shut off, leave the room, come back ten minutes later, and it's still shutting off! I have to force shut it off by holding down the power button. So I couldn't connect yesterday and most of today, so a friend told me to go to Command Prompt and do the ping 4.2.2.2, and ping Google. I got 0% for both, but then I could connect to the internet again... Is this Adware or Spyware problem?

did you try what I told you to do? connect to the router with your pc by using a network cable and see if the problem still exists. If it does, its your router, if it does not, its your wireless built in card thats acting up.

Most of my searches -- doesn't matter what engine, doesn't matter what browser -- are being hijacked to one of those "wanna-be" search sites that lead you to the sites THEY want you to visit.

I've run anti-Malware (twice), Spybot and Ad-Aware and still nothing. This comes after spending all morning getting rid of the "Windows Antivirus Pro" bug.

Suggestions?

what happens when you actually type a webside in the address bar? Since anti-malware didnt find anything, it could mean that you have a browser hijack virus and you need antivirus software to get rid of it, or it could be that you have a victim of a pharming attack (not very likely) in which case you would need to call your ISP see what the problem is and maybe switch you to a different DNS server.
