Sniper attack

I think that the teenager should be charged in Virginia. If convicted in Maryland, he would only get life. As for the father, I think it was a good call to charge him in Maryland.

"Malvo tried to escape from an interrogation room sometime after his capture by going through a panel in the ceiling, but investigators were able to pull him back down"

I hope he pleads "innocent". It would be so much sweeter.

Are you serious? Wow, I didn't know that. These people are unbelievable - almost laughable. If they didn't really kill all those people they'd be great for one of those "stupid criminals" TV shows.

Police have now arrested a third guy connected to the sniper case. You can read about it here .

I heard a really hypocritical quote about John Mohammed on the news a few days ago. It said: "He did it because he was angry about all the bad press and discrimination Muslims in the U.S. have recieved since 9/11/2001"
Does he really think he's helping his fellow Muslims by going on a killing spree and then saying "I represent Islam"!?

Hypocritical? Perhaps.

Misguided? Definitely.

Osama Bin Laden has done other things before 9/11. He was responsible for a couple U.S. Embassy bombings in a couple of countries. Does he think that Muslims didn't get bad press when those events occured?

He gets no sympathy from me. I don't understand how these people can honestly represent Islam, either, especially when, above all else, their cardinal rule is to be peaceful. Sure, other religions do the same thing, but with Islam it seems to be even MORE important.

It's a shame the cops didn't "find" them dead in their car...heh. I think this goes beyond the death penalty. I think this warrants an internationally televised execution....call me an idiot or whatever but we need some kind of drastic counter measure because nothing else is working....(obviously this would never happen because we can't risk insulting the peaceful Islamic population, wherever they are)

I think they should be allowed to live. In a tiny, windowless cell, where they can find God, and look forward to their Day Of Judgement for the next 40-50 years.

Now prosecutors in Virginia are saying that they officially have evidence that Malvo was responsible for one of the shootings. This article from the NY times has more.

That there's a trial about this speaks highly of our nation I think. There's no question these guys need to be thrown in the pit with a thousand evil men, yet we're going to still give them a fair shot in a trial.

What their lawyer could possibly say is beyond me. If I was their lawyer I'd simply say, "F--k 'em! I got nothin'!"

Great. The one thing good about VA is that capital punishment can be charged against people under 18. My comments came true.

Are you serious? Wow, I never knew that. Doesn't that go against the young offender's act, though?

Thats what the D.A. or Asst. D.A. ,forgot who they interviewed, said on WTOP News radio during an interview. I never knew that until he said it. I've never heard of the Young Offender's Act. What exactly is it?

Oh, I thought that the Young Offender's Act existed in the US, too. OK, well, in Canada, anyone under the age of 19 (unless the crime is incredibly heinous) is not allowed to be tried in adult court, cannot be shown on TV, and it all wipes clean at 19. I personally think it's a joke. Too many teens kill and knowingly kill these days, and they get off scott free.

Oh yeah, and there's no capital punishment in Canada, either. That ended a couple decades ago.

That Young Offenders Act sounds stupid. Just like that 3 strike law in California. Here's that law:

If a person commits any felony after March 7, 1994 and:

If the person has one previous "violent" or "serious" felony conviction (which includes burglary of an unoccupied dwelling), he or she is sentenced to twice the term prescribed by law for each new felony (and must serve at least 80% of the sentence).

If the person has two previous violent or serious felony convictions, he or she is sentenced to a life sentence with the possibility of parole. The minimum term of the life sentence is calculated as the greater of the following:

a. Three times the term otherwise provided

b. 25 years

c. The term determined by the court pursuant to other applicable sentencing provisions of existing law.

The age is 18, and yeah, it should definitely be changed. It's probably beneficial for the majority of cases, but there are so many that are heinous. There's one off the top of my head where an 11 y/o taunted policement to just "try and touch him" for beating a 2 y/o, because he was protected by th YOA.

That Young Offenders Act sounds like a complete and utter joke as does the 3-strikes thing in California.

I've heard that the US is the only western democracy to practice the death penalty or something like that.

I think the media is pulling our legs or not releasing a lot of facts just for the sake of storytelling. There's no way the guy who killed and wounded 15 people would say something hypocritical and represent it's own nationality.
