Okay, this is really weird...
For the first time
ever in this season, Erica's performance is making me forget all about Smallville's terrible treatment of the Lois character...and make me stay in-the-moment and just enjoy how she's been portrayed here. I think the dialogue is just more crisp this time out. She's reacting to things - how tired she is, how potentially annoyed Clark is - in a calm manner without rambling her lines out. She's speaking softly. She's dressed decently. She isn't worshipping him. They actually seem like a normal couple dealing with life. Amazing.
Of course, it doesn't really help matters that the show keeps reminding us of how Lois and Ollie were a better pairing (that funeral scene just brought it all back again). Lois just seemed to light up and get turned on around Ollie, and vice versa. I see Ollie and Chloe as a couple who have fun with each other during scenes, but Ollie and Lois had a stronger connection on all levels. Frustrating the show didn't throw caution to the wind there (or elsewhere).
And here's another example of why Smallville only gets it right half the time. What was the more effective "tell" that Clark wasn't really Clark? Him, suddenly knocking a telescope over right after Lois points out that she set it up to please him? Or Clark not reacting the sirens?

Ahh Tess. "Don't worry - the weeds will grow up and take the place over. They are
Luthor weeds after all." Best line in a good long while!
The leaves spewing out of the fireplace were a bit of a heavy touch, dontcha think?
How does Emil use some laser to solder a kryptonian artefact back together without even wearing a mask over his face?
Yes, Clark! TRASH THE FAIRY PRINCESS HEADQUARTERS!
That mirror in Tess' office was never there before. How...subtle. And don't they all get tired of going to the Ace of Clubs? Not exactly a hot date. Maybe in Alternate World the AoC is really exciting and happening.
I want one really, really good hot long Tess/Clark make-out scene before he goes bye bye.
Would have been so nice if this was Jonathan's first appearance since his death. It would have carried a lot more weight for Clark's dead father to suddenly reappear after a bunch of years. Clark's not really reacting like someone who is seeing their dead relative again.
Oh yesssssss. Clark and Tess. Kissing on the neck!
"That's because you have a habit of lying to yourself." Another good line!
I really want Bad Clark to stick around for a few weeks.
The stuff with Jonathan is really boring. Actually, all the stuff with Real Clark telling people from another world how much they are supposed to love him and blah blah blah...
I really hope someone gets off on watching people call Clark "son". Cause I'm so tired of it.
I wasn't entirely sure how they were doing to continue the fight - this show is notorious for throwing people into walls and then finding reasons to separate them - so the move to the Fortress was a little clunky. "Hey, there isn't much more of a set around Lionel's office...where else can they fight?" The two stunt doubles rumbling on the floor of Fortress did not match up with the two Wellings slowly standing,
at all.
Wait up - the Fortress has an inter-dimensional gateway now?!? Oh suuuuuure. Whatever keeps Clark from having to get blood on his hands

Yes, I know I sound like Ollie/Chloe circa Season Eight, but reeaaaallly. There was never a gateway before. Clark never knew the Fortress could do that.
They re-used that Terrence Stamp welcome.
Erica looks terrible in Clark's plaid. And also, Lois can't stop Clark from losing "himself". "...because that's who the world needs you to be..." Ugh. Almost made it a whole episode didn't we.
Lois looks really sad about the decision to sell the farm.
Nice quiet ending. Wow! Decent episode! Very decent! My favourite scene was probably Tess' date with Clark. Great lighting and Cassidy's fantastic with reactions.
Really strong episode. Right behind "Beacon" for me (which wins out because of the greatness of Martha, Chloe, Lionel and the mansion burning) and "Abandoned" (which had the greatness of Tess, Christine Willes AND fun exterior shots).
Hold on: Isn't Evil Clark still going to be trapped back in his world, where everyone has green K rocks? And also, I don't think for a second that he will be saved by teachings from Jor-El in the Fortress. That
never worked for Clark.
