Godzilla: destroy all monsters melee

I just got this. I like it a LOT more than SSB:M and I'm not even a fighting game fan to begin with. It plays like "King of the monsters" only 50 times more fun. In fact, this is the most incredibly fun game I have ever played. Destroying things is more satisfying than a crunch bar, the controls are good, the graphics are fantastic, some of the music can get you pretty pumped (and I NEVER use buzz-words like "pumped") and every monster has a pretty decent array of moves, esspecially Gigan, Destroyah and Mechagodzilla.

If you've ever played "king of the monsters", the setup is almost identical, but comparing the two is like comparing a scooter to a hovercar. The ONLY thing dissapointing to me about the game is that Hedorah, the smog monster, isn't a playable character. He just shows up at random in his flight mode. I also think mothra could have easily been made playable (hovering a little instead of walking) and Spacegodzilla would've been a far better choice than the rather dull Orga.

It is underrated, but it's no SSBM. It's a lot of fun to play, looks great, but it's pretty shallow altogether. Not a lot of moves or technique to the whole thing. I hope to see a sequel with a bit more depth to it.

Something that dissapointed me as a Godzilla fan was the character selection. I mean, everybody they have in the game is essential, but they could have had a lot more monters. Godzilla is fifty years old in 2003, and Toho has way more than 12 monsters that are fighting game worthy... I could easily name 20. Hell, this thing doesn't have as many monsters as the Destroy All Monsters movie... which is pretty dissapointing. At least all of them are very well rendered and adapted from the movie counterparts.

Caught me in an edit... :p

I agree on the variety, the one thing that would keep this from being the perfect game to me. If they could only have "fit" 12 monsters I can think of much better than the oft-forgotten anguirus and unremarkable Orga. The second most recent film pitted godzilla against a huge and very evil-looking bladed purple dragonfly, for instance. A future game is indeed in order. The ONLY monster in all of toho's little roster that wouldn't work as a playable character is the immobile biollante.

it's overlooked because it's about old monsters from old movies that are considered boring and.. old. I know the game is probably good, but it just seems so, B movie-ish. That's why I won't get i, and I know I shouldn't think like that... but I do! :D

That has to be the weirdest thing I've ever heard Jinjo. I always thought corny old monster movies were universally adored by all... I mean, I've NEVER met anyone in my entire life who didn't like 'em. Even the religious extremist movie review guy from capalert.com loves old giant monster flicks. Every child I know has a huge collection of godzilla tapes/toys and doesn't have the slightest clue what the difference is between donald duck and daffy duck. Everyone loves b-movies and godzilla! :P

...Is that out? I was waiting for that one, too.

I played a demo of War of the Monsters, and I gotta say, I walked away from the Godzilla demo a LOT more impressed then when I played WOTM. Here's why:

1: The license. Yes, there's greater vareity of monsters in WOTM, but when it all comes down to it, it doesn't have Godzilla and King Ghidorah in it. And I can't even begin to tell you how much the licensed characters enhance the game. It's just cool, as a fan of the films, to play as these characters that you watched as a kid. That benefits the game immensely. All of the sound effects and recognizable moves are cool, too.

2: The arenas, and the scale of the battles. In WOTM, your monster is fairly small, and you're dwarfed by the environments around you. Most all buildings are taller than you. You feel like a larger than normal human, but you still don't feel gigantic. Compare this to Godzilla. You are HUGE, and the way you move and the way the ground shakes communicates this to the player well. In WOTM, you can pick up a radio communications tower from the top of a building to throw at your opponents. In Godzilla, you can pick up the whole damn Sears Tower and hold it over your head... WITH ONE HAND. It's just awesome. And seeing tall buildings topple to the ground is cooler in Godzilla... the whole game just looks and moves better. And Godzilla also has real cities and landmarks, which is fun.

3: The Gameplay styles. WOTM plays like Twisted Metal Black, from behind the monsters, with a behind-the-back view, with a multitude of different projectile attacks. Godzilla plays like a traditional 3-D fighter, from an isometric perspective. WOTM is cool and all, but I happen to like the 3-D fighter style of play more. That's just my personal preference. They're both good games though.

I agree on the variety, the one thing that would keep this from being the perfect game to me. The Smog Monster is AWESOME and quite possibly one of Toho's best... I too was dissapointed he wasn't in there. I also would have liked to see Mothra as a playable character, plus Manda, Jet Jaguar, Space Godzilla, Biollante (might be immobile, but I'd make it work somehow)... I sense you're fan, so I don't have to name them all, but suffice to say, I was hoping that I would at least see every monster that made an appearance in the Destroy All Monsters movie. Still, if there's a sequel, they at least have some progress laid out pretty clear for them.

And I like Anguirus a lot... I would have been dissapointed if he wasn't in it. And weird as it might sound, I'd like to see the American Godzilla in it (90's, Roland Emmerich, you know the one). I know everyone hated the movie, but he'd be a cool unlockable, and I think he'd make a cool addition to the cast.

I like anguirus and they couldn't have done the game without godzilla's bestest buddy, but I mean a ton of monsters have a much weirder (and potentially very very fun) array of powers than anguirus, as well as rodan (though rodan is kind of a staple too)

I don't think the americanized godzilla would be that bad an idea either. Would be amusing for a super-hidden character.

Maybe hedorah could squash into a melted puddle and slide around like megalon's burrowing ability, and temporarily fly like ghidorah/rodan/mecha can (there'd have to be an ultra-fast animation changing him to the saucer shape for that to work, though) and rain down his sulphur.

"Giant Kaiju Attack! “Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee” Gets A Remaster"

Godzilla-Destroy-All-Monsters-Cover-Art.webp

"As was noted in our Summer Game Fest summary article, this is the time of year when we have several reveals on upcoming video games, but why should PlayStation, Xbox and Geoff Keighley have all the fun? Atari’s has unveiled some new games week, and they’re not feeling tied to any one platform. Earlier this week, they revealed their upcoming Toy Story collection, and now we have word of a new Remaster, one in which we get to play as the King of the Monsters!

Originally released as a GameCube exclusive in 2002, “Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee” is a 3D brawler allowing you to play as one of the many giant kaiju from the Godzilla-verse. The plot description from their Steam page reads as follows: “”From Atari and original developer, Pipeworks, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered updates the 2002 fighter with enhanced visuals and quality of life improvements. Choose your monster and battle it out with a range of brutal attacks through 8 locations, each with day and night variations. Battle through real-world cities, Monster Island, and the alien Mothership. Face off against your friends in local co-op or new online multiplayer.”"

And here's the trailer:

Never played this one, but did play the sort-of-sequel Save the Earth and liked it a lot. Godzilla is generally something where I like the concept more than the execution, but that was one of the exceptions. I'm looking forward to this re-release.

Is that Joan Cusack voicing Jessie in that Toy Story Papa John's commercial? If so, it sounds rough. Woundn't surprise me if it wasn't, though.
