Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Seems while fighting the Scorpion, the Hand and the Hulk in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Spidey learns of a much more powerful foe…someone who can bend buildings and create waves in the ocean, and may be unstoppable! And that person is…Jean Grey I mean NOBODY KNOWS! The new trailer released this afternoon refuses to reveal Sadie Sink the actor playing this mysterious invisible person.

There’s good and bad news…bad for Peter Parker personally, but good for his situation in general. He’s still mutating and now he’s gained the ability to generate webs on his own, just like his friend from another dimension who looks like Tobey Maguire. Perhaps he’ll develop into a superhuman able to take on Je–I mean, the mystery troublemaker. Or maybe he’ll just turn fully into a giant spider, die, and then give birth to himself. (Nah, that’d be crazy.)

We see a lot more of Michelle Jones and Ned during this peek, and a scene where Spider-Man has to rescue MJ for the “first” time. She’s in trouble for reasons unexplained, but we’d bet dollars to donuts her new boyfriend is a villain. Spidey’s idea of a “safe house” happens to be one that Frank Castle is inside. Can’t see that going wrong.

The hilarious thing is, Ned is pretty much the same guy, still in Pete’s Sidekick Mode even though he has no knowledge of who that is…and it’s driving him crazy. He has a conspiracy board full of news clippings and photos and is determined to figure out this superhero’s identity. Pete could have a rough time re-convincing MJ who he is, but it doesn’t look like it would take too long for Ned to accept him again.

Tom Holland returns as Spider-Man, though he keeps making public statements about retiring and giving the role to someone else. That would be a mess assuming Brand New Day is meant to launch a new trilogy. Maybe Zendaya and Jacob Batalon can talk him out of it. The movie also stars Jon Bernthal as Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, and…someone else.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in theaters July 31.
