About love.
Love means a lot of things to many people..this discription by Borg 4 of 3 is in my opinion, excellent..There are different kinds of love, just as there are different kinds of hate. levels, intensities, desires, implications, reasons, etc...This is the most intimate, yet one of the most universal of all subjects..For some one who is older to say to a younger person, "oh you don't know anything about love, is wrong.." A younger person may not see love as someone who has been married for 40 years sees love, but for a 17 year old in love, it is "love." Thre is not enough room or time to adequately discuss this here, or perhaps anywhere..I remember reading a play about it once...Something about "Romeo and a girl -Juliet".....by a well known playwriter of the times., for all times.Borg4of3 said:There's actually a few different words for Love from ancient Greece and adapted throughout time, and I may be a tad off. Eros is physical love - not just lust, but a wanting for physical unity. Philia is familial love, brotherly love. Storge is a natural affection, like that for cute things (plushes!) or motherly love. Agape is the big one - spiritual, sacrificial love, like that of a mother giving everything for her children, or the ideal love of a god to the world. Various sources have put it different ways, but it just shows that Love for one thing doesn't mean Love for another. For another look at that variety (and at the risk of looking academic), you should look up the triangle theory of love, which places Intimacy, Passion, and Commitment at different combinations to produce 7 distinct kinds of Love.
Love is a very broad term, but generally, it means... okay, I can't think of a general description that fits every scenario. I heard it once in an interesting way tho: 'Love is seeing someone or something as it is, and not as one imagines it, and treating it as it deserves' A little less poetic than most, but I love it
As for unrequited love - it depends. If you really love someone, it matters not whether they love you 'as much' back. If you're clingy and self-serving, then it will hurt when your love is not returned. A bit harsh, mayhaps, but some truth in there.
