the original writers of the original show will return for the new series, with Nickelodeon Animation to produce the show
I think C-3PO said it best:
That isn't very reassuring...
Let me get this out of the way. The original show was never (really) intended to be "adult" in any way. It's just that things got out of control, and it ultimately started becoming completely idiotic even by it's own standards, and all because John K. wanted to prove a point about "fake pathos" (I refer of course to the infamous Son of Stimpy episode). Long story short, he ultimately ruined his own creation, and that among other things was what led NICK to fire him from his own show (i.e., it was ruined even before... "that" version was made). OTOH, NICK was just as much at fault for trying to tell him what to do.
Then, years later, his ego, among other things, led him to make the other show the way he did. It didn't help that Spike TV started mixing in episodes from the original (mostly) family friendly show in it's timeslot. Because of this, the Ren and Stimpy franchise in general was digging itself deeper. Today...well let's just say if TV Tropes had an article called "Vindicated by Memetic Mutation", Ren and Stimpy would be a prime example.
So, I don't usually do this, but I'm going to go ahead and make a prediction: this new show won't be that much different from the original Nickelodeon series, but it's airing on Comedy Central because NICK is that embarrassed by that part of their history. IMHO, I don't really think airing it Comedy Central is going to help that much. I repeat, R&S wasn't meant to be an "adult" creation, but putting it on Comedy Central may give it an even worse reputation than it already has, which means it may cause more people to think that it really was meant to be "adult" when that wasn't really the intention.
(sigh)...
