The Toonami Thread

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Toonami and Cartoon Network (among the shows that were airing) were trending on Twitter last night.
just goes to show you Toonami still has a prescense if not in nostalagia but hey they could work with that and make it great again

I haven't said it yet, but I will.

I was one of them. I was one of the people that would openly say that we should let Toonami stay buried and in our memories, because Cartoon Network would NEVER want to remind us of it again.

And I was wrong. Damned wrong. You can all tell me not to be cynical Not to believe that television networks are what I thought they were. You can tell me to never doubt Williams Street again. I welcome it.

I was wrong. I was damned wrong, and I couldn't' be happier.

Ok, don't be cynical, don't believe television networks are what you thought they were, never doubt Williams Street again!

Good to see you've joined the light side.

An Unexpected and Happy April Fool's Day!

It was such an unexpected surprise to see Toonami on a TV screen again, I couldn't believe my eyes! The conclusion of Gohan and Cell's battle was a well chosen DBZ episode to air for that night! It reminded me back of when I was a kid! I was also glad that they used T.O.M. 3's "era", I was really glad it wasn't it's "final era". Even though it was just for one night, it was still awesome and I enjoyed every second of it!:D

Well, looks like they closed the other thread, and I'm not going to repeat that entire post again, so I'll summarize a bit here.

Re-branding ASA as Toonami just makes too much sense, and I don't know how anyone can really be against that. You'd have a sense of nostalgia with TOM and the bumps and just the general atmosphere of the whole thing, so it would probably hold at least some solid lasting appeal to the late 90's/early 00's crowd just on that alone. The block itself outside that, however, would still be used to promote new programming (basically, the current ASA lineup), just as it always had when it was still going. And of course, they have six hours of programming to work with, and obviously not all if it is new premiers, so if need be, they could easily throw in some DBZ or whatever other nostalgic bit comes to mind every once in a while (if they do what they did yesterday, that is, and obtain the rights for one day out of a month or something).

I just don't see where this doesn't work. I mean, the whole thing can't possibly cost that much money. Steve wants to do it, you KNOW he wants to do it, so he's not going to command a small fortune just to record lines. And they basically have the bumps in place; all they need to do is refresh them a bit, upgrade to HD, come out with a few new ones while they're at it, and they're set.

It just makes too much sense to me for them not to at least try this as an experiment and see where it takes them. I guess we'll see, though.

I read online that AS had 1.4 million viewers last night, but they didn't cite a source, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt. If that turns out to be true though, I'm positive it'll send a message to CN/AS/WS or whoever it concerns. They have to at least be discussing it.

Unholy monkey sauce.

If that is remotely true --- TPTB will have to look at that and go "Drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...."

Toonami would essentially be revived from that level alone.

I could believe the 1.4 mil number. People who don't usually watch ASA might have been tuning into see the prank (Or to watch The Room..I guess.) and the news spread like wildfire online within about 49 and a half seconds. Plus, you could put DBZ on during prime time on a hot July Friday on the Hallmark channel and it'd be a ratings pull.

If that was the average and not just the pique then it cannot be denied.

But in this thread I want to pose this question:

Is it a better use of the Toonami brand for it to be targetted at the adults who adored it for one hardcore night a week? Or is it better for CN to revive it to package their action programming with the possibility of a daily presence?

I'm a bit torn to tell you the truth. It seems like AS has more reason to turn ASA into Toonami than for CN to use it to give identity to their action line-up but I feel like we might be doing the current generation a disservice by hogging Toonami for ourselves.

Absolutely no to weekdays.

Saturday 12-6am is the home of anime in the United States. Literally the only other thing on at that time is Saturday Night Live.

I think WS has a lot more respect for Toonami now, honestly. Adult Swim exists partly because of Toonami. Do we really want Cartoon Network's last incarnation of the block back? The reason Toonami coming back would work is because it's "coming back". If anything, I would want CN to do something Miguzi-esque for their afternoon block. Toonami has always had the issue of skewing older and having to edit series. Toonami on ASA? Problem averted, and the people who want to see the block get it packaged with shows targeted at them.

On the other hand, sharing MIGHT not be out of the question. Say the whole thing goes over really well and CN takes Friday nights, and waters it down a bit, as they would likely do if they took over the whole thing. No montage, No game review, or a separate game review, because unless it's a Final Fantasy game most AAA titles are M rated. ASA would then take over Saturday nights and could even get away with calling it the "Midnight Run" again. They could even use separate TOM incarnations if they wanted. The changing of the pilot being the difference between ASA and CN Action.

Hey does anyone have any GOOD wallpaper images of like TOM3 and The Absolution Mk. 3?

I have some at least decent other Toonami wallpaper I can contribute:

EDIT: For some reason my wallpaper of just the absolution got way smaller when I uploaded it to photobucket so I apologize, trying to figure out why.

You know, at first I wanted to see Toonami back on Cartoon Network. To tell you the truth, though, I'd rather see it on Adult Swim. In my opinion it makes much more sense for numerous reasons, plus it would be a great way to balance the programming (AS gets Toonami, CN has DC Nation). Not to mention CN also now has Cartoon Planet. Adding Toonami to CN would be too much nostalgia even for me.

The prank was executed very well and I think that if CN/AS/WS weren't even at least remotely interested in making this a permanent block, they wouldn't pull this off in the first place. That thing was thought through from start to finish.

The only thing Toonami on Adult Swim needs is to go HD, or at least fully widescreen, and get some new shows from time to time. The executives clearly can re-create the old-school Toonami atmosphere we so much love, so that shouldn't be a problem. Just make new bumpers, keep the style, upgrade to HD, get a new show or two, bring the main old-school schedule back into rotation (what was on the other night + Voltron, Sailor Moon, ReBoot, Cowboy Bebop) and you're ready to go.

If anything, I want to hear Tom say something like: "Have you always dreamed about a perfect body? Then you should check out prosthetics. I've heard they can make you beautiful and immortal. Well... unless you get hacked. Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex is up next... only Toonami on Adult Swim"... :D

One of my favourite animes haha

In my opinion: CN had their chance with Toonami, and they threw it away.
"You Are Here" could have been Toonami, "Action Flicks" could have been Toonami, Friday's "Night of Action" could have been Toonami, but they didn't want to.
Don't forget the current regime that cancelled Toonami in the first place is still there. The same regime that still has an agenda of live-action and sports award shows.

I say let Adult Swim have Toonami and see what they can do with it. You have to admit that it was cool to hear TOM say things that would never fly on CN Toonami.
As for it being on Adult Swim keeping Toonami from being introduced to a new generation: they would find it eventually.

Well I dony thinm its comglim hack maybe untill may i.heard the.ratings were outstanding

I've been running the idea off and on for what? Maybe 2 years now? That Toonami should go to Adult Swim so I have to admit to being partial there.

However, the issue comes down to level of support and cooperation.

Let me paint a few scenarios:

#1.) Cartoon Network has access to a lot of good series today that could deserve re-run time. Toonami could easily be a venue for that for weekdays. It's not a stretch to say Ben-10 in various forms could get some rerun time, but more importantly shows that haven't gotten much rerun time that could use it as a venue. I'm referring to things like Clone Wars, Young Justice (not excessively), Thundercats (not excessively), Generator Rex and Batman: TBNTB. Noteably, Cartoon Network WOULD have to buckle down and add something else to that mix, but thats a good mix non-the-less. It would run perfect as a 5-7 block leaving 8-9 for weekday premiers leading into adult swim at 9. The only fear I have about Toonami going back to Cartoon Network is that they might try to make it like the failed Miguzi block.

#2.) If Cartoon Network plays nice, Adult Swim could snag 8 - 9 on Fridays and/or Saturdays and run Toonami during all of Adult Swim for those nights or Cartoon Network could play nice on their end and play something really action orientated leading into Adult Swim. One of the big pluses is this means Toonami never needs to deal with the 7P - 8P slot again which was always problematic when they were on Saturdays. Lets face it, DC Nation on one day and some "action block" to feature Thundercats and Star Wars would fit nicely, although giving Adult Swim that time for those days would allow CN to use those series for Saturday Mornings exclusively which IS proving to be a ratings grabber. In either case, Adult Swim could rule the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The one key element IMHO is if Toonami stays on Adult Swim, I think it would be more successful if Cartoon Network allows some shows that are "Cartoon Network Exclusives" to air on Toonami under Adult Swim.

#3.) Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and even Boomerang could share Toonami. As outlined above, Cartoon Network could use Toonami for something similar to what Toonami USED to be and Adult Swim could use Toonami as something more of a "Midnight run" for Fridays and Saturdays. I throw Boomerang into the mix because I can easily see Toonami running either from 11P - 1A or 12A - 2A showing older anime more on par with what we saw this last weekend on days Adult Swim focuses on comedy.

Now once again, the big problem still comes down to programming and Toonami is going to have to do something super special to program their block so it doesn't just grab nostalgia for a while and then suck.

IMHO, I think #2 is MOST LIKELY to happen. The big question then really becomes --- how are you going to program the block? We have to look at years past and recognize that when Cartoon Network still had 9 - 10 and ran Toonami on Saturdays, Adult Swim, as hard as they tried, couldn't get away from running comedy from 10 - 12. I think most of us can sit back and say too much action in one night eventually gets boring.

Toonami would probably be wise to break up their schedule into hour blocks:

Time SlotTypeExample

09:00P - 10:00PAnimated ComedyVenture Brothers / Gintama

10:00P - 11:00PBig Robots / High TechGundam / Astro Boy

11:00P - 12:00AShonen SeriesBleach / Naruto

12:00A - 01:00ASuspense SeriesDeath Note

01:00A - 02:00AWeekly Movie

02:00A - 03:00AAnimated Comedy

03:00A - 04:00ABig Robots / High Tech

04:00A - 05:00AShonen Series

05:00A - 06:00ASuspense Series

Following that order would make for quiet a fun block and allows for a nice mix. I would probably say if Toonami can capture both Friday and Saturday, Friday should be a rerun of the previous Saturday in an attempt to make it kind for people who aren't able to catch it every weekend.

When r we getting the.ratings for t

They should air FUNimations version of One Piece again om Toonami. Maybe supply with their version of Fairy Tail.

I'm not sure new shows are the answer just yet (that was what arguably killed Saturday Night Toonami in the first place). Start with bumpers and then gradually introduce new content. Prime the pump a little.
