The Toonami Thread

From what I remember, Miguzi lasted about two years. While it wasn't as successful as Toonami was, I don't think it was a failed block. I also enjoyed most of the shows that aired around that block and I liked some of the bumpers. It was a fun block for me.

I think that Toonami would probably work better on Adult Swim than on regular Cartoon Network at this point. It isn't because of the management, but because most of the people who were excited for Toonami airing on April Fools are teenagers/young adults, which would cater more to the Adult Swim crowd. I still like the idea of combining old and new shows to form the block. It sounds like a good way to bring in new fans and cater to the old fans of the show/block. I'm not sure if I'll send Cartoon Network or Adult Swim a letter or email. I might just for the heck of it, but the popularity on Twitter sounds like it should at least get the attention of the higher ups at Cartoon Network.

I think the fact AS is saying that they want to know if we want it back is a sign of their interest. I never watched Toonami a ton, but I watched it from time to time, and would like it back. I even remember its short lived run on Kids WB! Anyone else recall that? :tom:

Okay, that Tweet just gave me a great sense of optimism. Because that means they're serious, and it's almost guaranteed that there are enough internet-goers out there that are nostalgic enough about Toonami to show support.

I did my part - Retweeting, responding, and spreading it on a couple of forums.

Of course, I'm really hoping this brings One Piece back to TV, but I'm just wanting Toonami back to begin with.

I would be in support of this as long as it followed an idea that Dalek said on another message board, in that Toonami basically becomes a reskin for Adult Swim Action. It would give Adult Swim more life that it desperately needs since I am finding the bumps they've been using for the past few years to be pretty lacking and uninspired.

After all, for an April Fools Day joke where they basically been airing The Room for the past few years, Adult Swim really put a lot of work into this one. Giving TOM new dialogue, making a game review, even talking about buying the DVDs for the show so people can still watch them. I'm sure they had to dig up some rights to air these shows.

If it came back, it'd be on Adult Swim, right? How long would it be? What shows would they air? Would they throw in some old shows, as well as some brand new acquisitions? Would Tom 4 host due to the bigger budget they'd get? So many questions...

Who knows? For now let's just let them know we want it back.

They put more then a little work into this.

I'm not sure if this truly registered in everyone's brain yet, but they added brand new bumpers for every show intro. That's right EVERY show intro. If you noticed, each show intro featured scenes from the episode they played and ONLY that episode. Heck, they even made brand new "Now, Then, Later" bumpers for the whole night. If that wasn't enough, they had a brand new game review AND quick pitches for DVDs of every series they played. That's A LOT of work.

Beyond that, they had to sit down and figure out how to mesh Tom 3.0 and Tom 4.0 bumpers into a nice looking presentation.

I'd go so far to say that it wouldn't surprise me if they put more work into this "joke" then they did on bumpers for the last two years. Heck, they may have spent more time on these bumpers then they did the last year of Toonami combined.

Given a real Toonami rebirth is going to need more then just rehashing a few bumpers. What they have would easily work for the short term, but for the long term, they're going to need to dig out the original graphics and do some tweaking.

You know, as an after thought --- I wonder if it would have been more of a joke if the would have brought back Tom 4.0. I know some people liked the new version, but I think the majority clearly said they made Tom 4.0 too "kiddy" and he lost all his kick-ass-ness he had.

You know, just something to toss out here --- I liked the mesh of v3.0 and v4.0, but I really liked the v2.0 control room and Sara a lot more. The v3.0 control room always felt so cramped IMHO.

Obviously someone at William Street is really pumped to try to make this happen.

That was all Toonami style circa 2004-2007 so no nothing was used from the TOM 4.0 years. It was mostly retooled 2004 and 2005 style bumps and a few reused bumps from that era but there were also some either brand new renders or never used ones for TOM 3.0 and Sara 2.0 in the mix.

A lot of video editing went into this stunt.

Supposedly Sean Atkins had no part in it but Jason DeMarco did. My guess is AS still has some old Toonami staff other than Jason on staff and they and maybe some folks who just fondly remembered the block went to work trying to be as authentic as possible. What we got was about as close to recreating Toonami Saturday with shows from Toonami's hey day as you can get. If that's what they can do on a rush job, I look forward to seeing bumps with more careful scene selections made with long term use in mind.

While it seems like TOM 3.0 was chosen because 4.0 was generally disliked among older fans. That decision probably has more to do with the last era renders being made outside of WS and thus they would have a harder time tweaking them if they did not have the render files.

If AS made a new Toonami look, I wonder how that might turn out? But I don't think they are willing to spend money on a new look when a the one used on Saturday would suffice. It must be cheaper to make TOM and Sara do new things from saved renders than it is to redesign them and the space they occupy. But I agree that control room is a bit cramped so maybe they can give TOM and Sara a bit more space to work with.

I feel the need to again reflect on how Williams Street does things that pretty much no other people in television do. They go out of their way to cater to their fans on-air when they can. Can you guys honestly give me another example of anything quite like doing this for us on the 1st or heck even stuff with like the adult swim black and white cards? I really feel like they are truely their own niche of awesome.

If AS brings back Toonami, they will be awesome, and anyone who speaks badly of them will have to answer to me!

I really want toonami to come back and I hope AS brings it back, but i thought I heard that the workers of adult swim hates anime. Is that true? Or was that just an ugly rumor?

There's people who don't like it and people who do. Just like anywhere.

Times change and the people working at a company come and go and change. It could be that the workers at Adult Swim now are more open to anime and if a Toonami re branding increases the ratings of anime on Adult Swim then they would be all for it.

There is a chance for Toonami's return and however slim it is we have to take that chance and make it work in our favor.

If I were CN and [AS], I would air Toonami on Friday and Saturday nights.

After Cartoon Planet, I'd use Friday nights to air old anime like Yu Yu Hakusho or DBZ and old action shows like Samurai Jack.

Then Saturday nights they can use the lineup they currently use.
Actually thats a pretty good idea A Night of Nostalgia....but I dont see it happening since they are airing New Americandad(new to AS) and i believe eagle heart(that show is actualy pretty decent) and delocated(horrible) on that night.

I had my first taste of Toonami in 2001 when a friend had me watching Dragon Ball Z, when I began it was either April or May of that year, DBZ was in the middle of another loop of the Cell arc, I think it was Goku and Cell's fight that I first saw, for as much as I remember. I kept watching it as I was easily taken into the story line and characters, even though I still didn't have too much a clue as to what it was. (I once confused Frieza for Bulma... I was still trying to learn character names)

Aside from DBZ, I checked out other shows on the block. I enjoyed Sailor Moon and Reboot. As sad as this may sound, I couldn't get into the original Super Friends :P

With the progression of DBZ down the road, it did help me to get into other animes that aired on Toonami, which eventually brought my favorite lineup ever, just in 2-hour form. G Gundam, DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. I loved that lineup!

I enjoyed the bumps that were made for the block, especially from the point I watched until about 2004 when Miguzi took over. I did enjoy the new bumps for Saturday, and did enjoy the four hours it had, even if was 2 days worth of lineup a week.

I missed a great deal not having watched it before, but 2001 I'd say was a fair time to start, as I had 7 years of it to see, which is okay.

I was disappointed when the block ended, but that happens, so I lived with it.

There's a 2-minute clip I watch occasionally that I first saw in 2001 using clips of the animes played then (DBZ, Outlaw Star, Tenchi) and maybe some others but can't remember right now. Called "Dreams". Takes me back to my personal welcoming of the block, and those favorite DBZ episodes of mine that just felt right to see.

The Voyo-exclusive Romanian dub of Garfield and Friends goes on with the second season now being relased. I was afraid they will forget about the show after only one season.

As someone who's Portuguese, it just bugs me again that we lost. I wanted Portugal to win this time because this is Ronaldo's last, but no, we think Ronaldo has devolved significantly, and we lost against Spain.

Conflicted about the upcoming film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone, given the creator now distancing herself from it despite co-writing the screenplay and blocking one of the actresses on social media despite defending her casting in the film.
