The Official DC Animated Universe DVD Talkback, Part 11

If anyones bothered to glimpse back at the past threads, Part 1 of this official dvd talkback thread was started in 02, back when we were still grating over the next 4-episode single discs from WHV.

We've come a long way...

Indeed we have.

If there was commentary on "Comfort and Joy", it would feel like a waste (I feel there are better episodes). Not that it would be too too bad, I'd like to hear about the J'onn/Kents interaction.

I'd have to totally disagree. From a character standpoint, this is the strongest episode we've seen in all of JL/JLU. Just because it also happens to be the least-action packed doesn't mean it isn't worthy. I mean really...what appeals more to you? Hearing the guys say "Wow that's a well-chereographed fight sequence!" over and over again, or "We thought John was the type of guy who had a good relationship with his grandmother and loved the snow because..."

Fight sequences are self-explanatory. The choices the writers made about their characters are not. I never felt I really knew these characters until this episode came along and showed me who they really were.

I got a question for Jim Harvey:

Since the final season of Justice League will be on DVD in June, will Season 1 of Justice League Unlimited be part of the Classic Collection, or will it be part of the Kids Collection?

I actually frequently fast forward through long fights because I find them extremely boring.

I may not be Jim Harvey, but more than likely it'll be a part of the Classic Collection.

Most of the episodes in the second season are fair game for commentary except "hearts and minds". I'd go for "the terror beyond part two", "secret society part one", "hereafter" part two and "starcrossed" part three. But that could change tomorrow. There are plenty of good episodes. The question is which ones do the staff have the most to talk about?

hey guys, I don't know if this has been stated yet, but I have been bothered thinking about it. Do we know if any coming TT Season Sets will include The Lost Episode in episodes on a set or as a special feature of a set?

I could see them pulling a "Critters" and doing commentary on "Hereafter Part Two", but I'd rather they didn't. I really do hate all these bug and animal-filled sci-tales that best belong at the back of the bargain bin.

"Hearts and Minds", good story that it was, really wasn't a shining moment in the season. Which is really saying something, given that the best of these last JLU episodes are "good" by comparison and not quite "great". JL Season Two really rocked. I hope the special features really delve into just how good it rocked. But then again, I should stay realistic.

How about which of the first 13 JLU episodes should get commentary?

I'm hoping for: "For the Man Who Has Everything", "This Little Piggy" and "Wake the Dead". Actually, I'm pretty sure that's what they'd choose too...

...but who knows if WB will let them do three commentaries on only 13 episodes.

My question about Justice League Unlimited is, when will we get confirmation that this series in its entirety will be coming out in DVD box sets in the first place? Also, will it be released as a single JLU 39 episode box set, or as three JLU 13 episode box sets?

I think it's a safe bet that JLU will be released as three 13 episode season sets. Many fans would probably argue if it should be called JL Season Three or JLU Season One. Since the Batman ones were called BTAS all the way, I'd speculate it will be called Justice League.

Well, in terms of production numbering, JLU is considered a different show and while TNBA aired under the BTAS banner in reruns, JLU has never aired under the Justice League banner. So I think it'll be called JLU Season 1, but that's just my take on the matter.

I could see Commentary on

Wild Cards pt 2, to a)cover the Jon and Shayera scene and b)discuss the difficulty they had synching the animation with the real-time clock. I got quite a response from b.t when i posed that question awhile back, and it'd be cool to get in-depth coverage of that situation.

Twilight pt 2 would be good to acknowledge the "return" of Superman to form, if they feel like critiquing their own work in that fashion.

Hereafter pt 1, as the story is one of the oddest mixes of adaptation, homage, parody, cameos, etc.

As cool as Starcrossed is, we pretty much know the major behind-the-scenes tidibts already (how DC suggested a traitor, the buildup since season 1, destroying the watchtower, etc). All that leaves is a list of who-storyboarded-what that I may or may not be interested in. And the commentaries have never leaned towards dissecting character motivations, so Comfort and Joy isn't really suitable in my eyes either.

As for Unlimited, it'll definitely be in 3 sets of 13 now (could've been 2 sets of 26 if wed gotten one more season, oh well). I could see a TNBA scenario with them listing it as season 3, and a box underneath saying "from Justice League Unlimited."

I assume it will just be JLU Season Sets because 13 eps a season, with 3 seasons would seem too large for one box, but cutting into two would be even stranger, besides, shows like Superman will have 3. And seen as JLU is a current DCAU show, it will most likely follow the pattern of its siblings TT and TB, or, at least like BB is doing. Either way, I assume we get 3 seperate season sets, which I am ok with, maybe it'll make more oppertunity for commentaries and special features.

oh yeah, in addition to my earlier question about whether or not TT's "The Lost Episode" will be on any upcoming TT sets, I also wondered something that may seem like a dumb question: does the TT: Trouble in Toukyou (Tokyo) movie have a specific release date announced yet?

I secretly hope that, if the show is called "JL Season 3", "JL Season 4", and "JL Season 5", that the DVDs use the original JL intro. I never liked the JLU intro, myself...

It's not much of a secret if you just told everyone. :p

Plus, I like the JLU intro. You can have the JL intro on your shows, I'll take JLU for my JLU. Plus, by that time there will be chapters, so it won't matter, you can just skip it.

The JLU intro is the best intro since Batman Beyond.

I second that.

I liked the original JL opening in theory, but the whole thing fell apart for me with wonky-looking CGI. (And really the silhouetted capes and hair looked good using CGI fx, but for me DCAU/Timm-styled artwork just doesn't translate well to three-dimensions.)

I liked both entrances, but I definately prefer JLU's opening for JLU, just as when I watch my New Adventures box set I never play the episodes with the Batman: TAS theme, because its original theme was the Batman/Superman one. Leave things uncut and unaltered, that's how I feel about it. Maybe they could do them like they did the 4th Batman box and when you hit Play All it could give you a menu to pick either JL theme or the originally used JLU theme. That would solve our problem, wouldn't it?

btw, are my posts just invisible or something, I don't seem to be getting any responses about what I had been saying? Maybe I missed something...

Well, if JLU had one standard, static opening, where they used the best clips from all 39 episodes while the music played and head shots of the Big 7 slideshowed across the screen, I would have liked it. But they could never make up their mind what clips to use! Just a pet peeve of mine, I guess.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
