"The Amazing Digital Circus" News & Discussion

It was the #1 movie in the US on its its opening day, outgrossing Scary Movie, the new He-Man movie, and Mandalorian and Grogu.

Even if it trails off,we're talking about a limited-time event of something that will be free on YouTube in two weeks. That is absolutely mindblowing.

There's a trend we're seeing this year, with Iron Lung, Obsession, Backrooms, and now TADC; indie creators with YouTube follows making their own breaks and finding their own way into theaters. Hollywood studios will always have a tremendous structural and institutional advantage in theaters that indie creators will have to overcome, but four hits in the span of like six months is harder to ignore.

They asked for no spoilers. So I'll avoid even that with a filter. I dont want to upset the man-faced fish. He already has religious issues.

But I thought it was great. Very bittersweet. It might meet or subvert some expectations. But I do think it sticks the landing.

FIFTH. HIGHEST. GROSSING. MOVIE. WORLDWIDE.

Meanwhile, I barely even noticed they released a new Star Wars film.

Well. Now that EVERYONE knows the final twists, let's dive in.

I have been known to misinterpret things. So my takeaway from the final scenes was that Caine revealed the people they were based on already left and are living their lives -- meaning all the characters we've been following have been computer AIs based on them, not just Caine -- so they decide to make the best lives they can inside the computer world, because what else can they do. Was that what happened or am I wrong?

I successfully avoided the leak and any and all commotion associated with it. I guess everyone who drove Gooseworx off social media during the leak was mad about Jax? To me, Jax was always meant to be a tragic character. There was always a sliver of hope he'd find redemption, but once the show established that abstraction was a thing, that meant ONE of the characters had to suffer that fate before the end, and Jax was always the prime candidate (Kinger was the second).

When they cut to the abstraction crawling around the floor, some girl in the middle of the theater cried out "NO!!" Then there was that cruel little brief period when it could've been the frog or the clown, so everyone held their breath, but nope -- someone said it was Jax thirty seconds later. This made the extended look at his life that much more poignant because you knew he was beyond saving.

I wasn't super attached to Jax -- the fact that he was an absolute jerk made that difficult, and God help me, there were times I WANTED this fate for him -- but I know how it feels when everything in a show's story is pointing to your favorite character's death and you hope against hope that the tropes will be subverted and they won't do the obvious. I just went through this with Eleven, so all fans of Jax, you have my sympathies, and a virtual hug.

My friends said they think C&A made brain scanners, but went under as a company. And left the technology in the building during the close out. (which now that I type it, I ask "why would they leave that"). That may be how Pomni's human form wondered in and put the headset on.

But yeah, there was only ever the slimmest hope of internet. And Caine used it to research the true names, which he knew. But now all characters in the Circus are stuck there. They always were. Caine was right, there is no exit. And if there was, there is no where to go.

BUT.

If they didn't get out, how could they all be together at the bus station in that final shot? They didn't know each other previously.

My guess is that was just a twist of fate. I dont think the IRL versions intended to meet there. It was just a bunch of people that happened to meet at the bus stop. But as a twist of fate, were fated to meet as digital copies in a virtual world.

I think any version of these people were meant to meet. It's just the IRL versions was not a sustained meeting.

So at the end of the day, they can't leave. And not because Caine was holding them against their will—because they're not the actual users. They're just brain scans; computer data. Yeah, I resigned myself to that fact just as quickly as they did. I did like that Caine chose to help make the circus better for them, and it's nice to know their real-world personas are living good lives, especially Jax's.

You hope against hope they won't play the "one or more of them abstracts" card, and wouldn't you know it, they do.
One is tempted to believe Jax is right in saying that he did it to himself, and in inferring that he's responsible for Ribbit's and Kaufmo's abstractions as well. There were signs that he was redeemable, like when he began to bond with Pomni in episode six, but I guess they have to WANT to be redeemed, huh? At least they gave his last sliver of consciousness a nice send-off.

They did mention real-world-Jax is a regular at real-world-Zooble's bar, so it's not impossible.

Going offline until further notice. David Ellison has won. I’m seeking therapy permanently rather than quitting life. Take care everyone. Once I leave the world into the void, I hope my life is better.
Is that Joan Cusack voicing Jessie in that Toy Story Papa John's commercial? If so, it sounds rough. Woundn't surprise me if it wasn't, though.
