"Looks like Wildwood won’t be the only stop-motion movie we get in 2026. Cinema Fantasma, a new animation studio in Mexico, is about to premiere their first feature on Netflix — and it happens very soon!
I Am Frankelda is what sibling directors Roy and Arturo Ambriz call their creation, and no, it has nothing to do with Frankenstein — though monsters play a big role. Frankelda is a young writer in 19th century Mexico who only wants to be appreciated for her work, yet the townspeople dismiss her efforts. One day while scribbling alone in the graveyard Frankelda miraculously meets one of her characters, who takes her into the world of her own imagination.
Frankelda soon learns the world of dreams and fantasies is in danger, and if it goes, so does the real world. Only her own power of storytelling can save the realm, but the villainous Procustes has plans to seize control of it and captures her as a method of doing so.
“As brothers, we grew up inventing worlds together, drawing, playing, imagining,” Roy and Arturo say in a joint statement, :Over time we understood that fictional characters were not only companions but guides. Sometimes they felt closer than the people around us. They provided us courage, wisdom, and solace. We believe fiction is not an escape from reality but a way of understanding it. A way of converting truth into palatable chunks. I Am Frankelda comes from a lifelong love of storytelling.”"
