Sniper attack

This reminds me of the James Patterson Alex novel CAT'S CRADLE. I'd wanted to see a movie based on it for while, a sequel to KISS THE GIRLS and ALONG CAME A SPIDER. Now I'm not so sure.

Not to get technical, but that novel is actually called Cat And Mouse. Sorry, but a big fan of James Patterson, especially the Alex Cross novels.

And since you mentioned it, it does have a scary resembelence to parts of the novel.

I live in Sothern VA, about 3-4 hours away from all of this, but I have family friends in the DC area, and friends from school who live in the Fredricksburg area.

This is just scary and sick. Everyone in the area, I fear for you. Take great caution. Hopefully, this guy will be caught sooner rather than later.

On a separate yet related issue, why is the media calling this guy a sniper? He acts more like a guerilla really.

Word is that "they're" already blaming video games:

Although I don't usually find Penny Arcades amusing, this one actually was a little better than the rest I've seen.

Clayface, you work in Beltsville?

Yeah, the Beltsville/Greenbelt area.

And for those that haven't heard yet, it looks like the guy has struck once again tonight. Just breaking news is that a woman was killed outside of a Home Depot. :(

Yeah, just heard about that shooting.

Something that they mentioned caught my attention. The news said that these sniper attacks have helped local businesses. This I have to see.

May I echo that too?

Don't get me started on the media - they're only making things worse. Do you think that, after plastering the picture of the white van all over the news, he's still going to be using that van anymore? And who knows where he'll stike next?

I hope they get whoever did this.....and put him out of his misery....

Really? And how does it have local businesses? IMO, it actually hurts them.

Well, if it makes you guy feel any better, here are some clues that the police chose to disclose. Although, they do seem a bit obvious.

"However, police are not commenting on the reports. Nor are they talking about a yellow piece of paper found at the scene of Friday's killing in Virginia. It reportedly contained scribbled directions from northern Maryland to the Capital Beltway, the highway that rings Washington, linking Maryland and Virginia.

The release of the composite image and the timing of the sniper shootings has led to speculation that the sniper may be a contractor who has access to these white trucks through his job but is off weekends when he doesn't have access. One theory is he is shooting from inside the back of the truck.

Some suspect the sniper chooses locations that offer a quick getaway. The last four shootings were all close to major highways and quick escape routes.

Police have also used computer software to reconstruct the crime scenes and pinpoint the shooter's position. Originally designed for movies like Star Wars, the programs can line up the bullet trajectories.

Authorities today offered an address for people to send in tips: P.O. Box 7875, Gaithersburg, MD 20898-7857. People who want to report information on the case can also call a tip line set up by police: 1-888-324-9800."

This is sick - that makes it 9 killed victims and 2 injured?

I don't blame the cops for going to the media. They have to get the news out so people will be aware of what's going on, and perhaps they can provide some clues. Unfortunately, there's a huge negative side effect to this, as it just strokes the ego of the ego-hungry killer. Of course, this is a delicate balance - and unless the media and the cops find this perfect balance, they'll never catch this guy unless he screws up big time.

You guys wanna know a weird little tidbit of information?

My sis works as a school photographer. And the school where that boy was shot was a school she and her team were scheduled to go to that week. Creepy, huh?

I have a feeling that there is a possibility that this could be a competition between two groups of people - seeing who can get the most kills before they get caught and which is the most daring, ie most populated. So far there have been three vehicles - the white van, the box truck and now an older blue sedan that witnesses say drove around the Home Depot three or four times before the shooting, the driver made a gun pointing motion with one hand and then speed off after the shooting.

I hope that the people behind it are caught soon, before anyone else is hurt and I wish that they would have been caught long before their first victim was struck. People that are willing to commit these type of crimes are by far the most dangerous - seeing as how they are unpredictable and understand the locations they are in, always being near a quick escape route. By the time the police are aware of the shooting they are probably long gone.

To the people in the DC area - remain vigilant and safe - hopefully this reign of terror will end soon.

I think it's a possibility.

Whoever is doing this is a sick person who is also intelligent enough, and trained enough in arms to be able to stay a distance away and basically hunt people he can shoot. Random people he doesn't know who have family and friends and had a life of their own. That card he left was right....he (or they do) does think he's(they're) god.
I'm wondering if this is someone who's like ex-military who would have the know-how to do this. Whatever it is, I hope it ends soon.
All those in that area have my prayers.

Other than military, there has also been a lot of speculation that this could be an Al Queda or terrorist cell that is commiting these attacks. With the recent escalation of attacks all of the world (Kuiwait, Bali, Yemen) in recent days it's entirely possible.

Even if it isn't though there is a lot of speculation that the success of these attacks could spark terrorist cells within the US to launch similair attacks.

No kidding. We've got enough psycho nutjobs up here to begin with. We don't need more. Especially not guys who are crack shots (unfortunatly) with a rifle.

Not to freak people out more, but I had a thought listening to the radio. You know how the police keep closing down roads and highways around the areas like right after shootings happen? And this person still eludes them? Could he be a police officer?

Ugh, I certainly hope it's not a cop. I really doubt it is.

Anyhow, I was just flipping through the TV channels this afternoon, and did I see that the fed were getting involved? I could've sworn I saw Ari-whats-his-name talking on CNN about the shootings in the area. This is getting serious. (Heck, it was serious after the first one.)

They may or may not have an eye witness. Someone apparently saw the shooting, but they haven't conclusively said if this person did or not. They have a good dexcription of the van. It's a work van with a silver roof rack and a burned out left tail light. Here's hoping they nail these people (there's more then one to get away this fast) soon.

An inside job? Well, interesting theory but we still really don't know a lot about this guy except that he shoots people and drives a van.

Don't get me started on the media - they're only making things worse. Do you think that, after plastering the picture of the white van all over the news, he's still going to be using that van anymore?

I agree with you totally. Of course this guy isn't going to be using the same van anymore (unless he's a total moron but it doesn't look that way). It's times like these that I wish that Freedom of the Press would be temporarily suspended if they keep doing dumbass reports like that.
