Smallville #3-07 "Magnetic"
Clark (Tom Welling) is suspicious when Lana (Kristin Kreuk) suddenly becomes attracted to a fellow student (guest star Kevin Zegers) and begins to act rebelliously, which eventually lands her in jail. Clark's suspicions are confirmed when he discovers Lana's new boyfriend has magnetic powers that can move objects and alter human emotions, but when he tries to free Lana from the paranormal hold that is controlling her, she tries to kill him. Meanwhile, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) discovers Chloe (Allison Mack) has been delving into Lionel's (John Glover) past and tries to get her to join forces against his dad.

Sam Jones III, Annette O'Toole and John Schneider also star. David Jackson directed the episode written by Holly Harold.

Is that sarcasm, or are you being serious? lol, I can't tell! :p
But Holly Harold wrote this, incase you didn't know. (Got the info from KryptonSite).

I swear, they just beat around the same ideas over and over and over....

This episode was a rehash of, well, just about everything we've already seen so far. Season 2 was great, but the vast majority of Season 3 has been kind of hit-and-miss so far. The bits with Lex and Chloe were a little interesting, but even Rosenbaum couldn't rectify this awful script. Seeing the same old stuff over and over again can get tiring... its not the FOTW, but the sequence of events that's pretty much been played out before. For the moment, Clark and Lana need to give it a rest and be friends so the time wasted on that can be used to toy around with more interesting concepts.

Yes, I meant it rhetorically (the writer is in the first post). This was the most ridiculous, god-damndest thing I ever saw. The villain's powers were nothing new; just a combo of Magneto and handshake guy from the episode "Hug." I'd give the writer points for wheeling them into one new power, but the explanation for its effects was too simplistic and insulting. I also found myself telling my friend, "There's a dude on Smallville who got super powers when a biker at a carnival hit him in the head with a snow globe filled with kryptonite. Now he can control metal and if he holds your hand, you fall in love with him," which I don't think I should ever have to do.

Then the episode takes us on a wild ride of recycled scenarios with nonsensical twists, populated by familiar faces who were either parodying themselves or behaving totally out of character. For example, Chloe walks into the Torch office only to find it in shambles. Is this premise even shocking anymore? Then some fat guy walks out and casually takes away her computer. Then, Lex shows her this guy's decaying body and says his father is a dangerous man. WHAT?

Half the time, I didn't even know what the hell was happening. It's almost like this writer was told to slide in an episode about people digging into the Luthors' background, but also have nothing happen. The only story development was Lex telling Chloe, "I'll protect you." That's another thing about this episode. The dialogue was all placeholder and no dressing. Let me tell you something: I like the dressing. I don't like to see the strings. I want to see characters interact. I don't want to see them merely telling each other things. Write up to us. We're not idiots, just because we're watching the WB.

The scene where Chloe creates a cover by kissing Clark and laughing it off has been done a million times on other shows and movies, and it was totally out of character for her. Chloe is a quirky, awkward teen. Not a confident, retarded adult.

And the ending only brought us more cliches, such as Lana's "thanks for saving me" speech in the barn loft at the end. And don't get me wrong -- I love when they end the episodes in that barn. For all I care, end them all this way. But not with such terrible dialogue. She's all, "Clark, you better start sharing your secrets with me, because one day I'm really going to find a new man." "OK." Who acts like this?

I missed this week's episode, but given the comments so far, I haven't been missing much.

If they are going to have a "freak of the week". Why not let him have his powers because he is a meta, not just from Kryptonite.

Lex proves again that he's the real star of the show. I could care less about the trials of clark kent, I wanna hear what's going on in the Luthor family. Lex's dialogue with other characters or his father is some of the best on tv today. Aside from that....

Lana and some weirdo guy, again.
Clark jealous, again.
Meteor rocks sending teenagers through weirdness, again.

Not exactly original.

Chloe is in the middle of Luthor family intrigue. <smiles> that chloe, will she ever learn?

Is anyone else getting REALLY tired of the coma thing? EVERYONE falls into comas or loses their memory after clark uses his powers on them. Why not just work a way to do fight scenes where clark works more in the background.

This was an ok episode. Even though the Clark and Lana storyline was main in this episode, is was just a filler because Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) really shined, this episode was a set up for next week's thriller with Lex as the main player. I really liked how Lex tricked Chloe, just the same way his father did. I really cant say too many great things about this episode, but Clark is getting smarter figuring out the cases but still has to learn how to say them right. I think the kid didnt die because he didnt kill anyone, most people who kill someone in a certain episodes dies.

Why wasn't security onto that guy who smashed the globe over "magnetoboy's" head? next week looks a lot more promising. Anyone else think it was weird that the snowglobe was made out of real meteor rock?

This was an interesting and entertaining episode, but not one of my favorites. While Clark was strongly jealous over Lana's new "boyfriend", he surprisingly managed a solid balance of control. I couldn't help but laugh at how the boyfriend had Magneto-like powers, which set the stage for an evenly matched intense confrontation between him and Clark. Lana was clearly an innocent victim in this whole mess, but her disappointment over Clark's inability to commit to her is a real sensitive spot. Lex is definitely becoming extremely unhinged (he clearly takes great delight in manipulating Chloe and gaining more control). Next week's episode should be a great one because we viewers may finally see Lex show his true colors and emotions he keeps ever-so-perfectly hidden/contained from the rest of the world around him.

When I think of Smallville then I think of the 60 year history of Superman and all the ideas that hundreds of writers could offer to the show, and then they come up with a season one episode all over again this far into the series, I want to hang my head down and weep. This show is on par with the deer eating girl for worst. episode. ever. In season one, this may have been OK, but not in season three. I have come to expect more from this show. When they announed they were going back to the basics, I guess that meant rehashing plot lines from from previous seasons.

And what's up with Token? Uh, I mean Pete? His 8 second cameos each week are of him running in a room to blurt out something major just happened and it's like, Ok, where were you the rest of the episode? Where did you even COME FROM?

And when is Clark just going to stop putting up with all this crap? Get some backbone Clark, and put Lana in her place. You're supposed to be Super MAN, not Superwuss. How can you be Superman, Clark, when Chloe and Lana are in possession your family jewels?

And speaking of 60 years of Superman history....we have 60 years of villians and ideas to draw from and all we get after all this time is freak of the week? Where's Braniac? Metallo? Legion of Superheroes? Cousin Kara? Heck, even at this point I would accept a Krypto episode if it meant I didn't have to endure another FOTW episode!

Well, you can't put Superman villains in a show that takes place before Superman.

They got Lex, I don't know a lot about the comics, but I don't think Lex was an issue until Clark became superman? Which isn't that bad, Lex being one of the few human villains superman has. I was hoping the rumors way back when of bringing bruce wayne in once in a while were true, but it will not come to pass. :(

Not Impressed
  • Thought it was a typical story.
  • Villain with powers was a little lame.. magnetism..
  • Looks like Lana's moving on..
  • Highlight of the episode for me was the Chloe/Lex sub plot. I thought that was pretty good.
Overall a C. First show of Smallville in this 3rd season that I didn't like. It just didn't do much for me especially being sandwiched between a surprisingly good episode last week and what looks to be a good episode next week.

Kid Superman VS Kidneto. Psh. Filler. Not bad, but now that the fans expect more, it's filler.
Next week, however...oh yeah. Looks like good stuff. I better not forget to record that one.

I am not talking about all his villians, of course, and also they could handle some of them like they did with Perry White, where Clark meets them maybe before they turn evil or starting out. Not all his opponents have to get their powers from Kryptonite. Braniac is one that I think should be in Smallville. And the Phantom Zone villians would be awesome.

They could do a few episode story arc based on the STAS episode where Brainiac goes back in time to stop Clark.

I love this series, but I can't see them doing anything that complex or cool. Though you never know.
