Maison Ikkoku is a wonderful animated soap opera, a deft mix of romantic melodrama and comedy, featuring characters that grew on me very quickly. It's a great adult-level story. I've seen it only in sub, though, so I don't know how good the dubbed version is. But the sub version is an excellent series.
Yes, the art style is a bit dated, especially for the male characters, but SciFi has shown that old-school stuff can still attract viewers. It's also talky and slow-moving in spots. No sword fights, no gunfights, no life-or-death martial arts battles. And no fanservice to speak of. It's just an excellent romantic comedy.
Then again, romantic comedy in general doesn't seem to do well with the 18-24 male viewers that [AS] is so desperate to get. From what I've read, romantic comedy does fairly well with the 25-34 males and with 18-34 females, but it appears to me that [AS] has pretty much abandoned those segments of the young-adult demo.
