"Scooby-Doo - Mystery, Inc." News & Discussion Thread

Can I say this is probably the best series update i've seen of Scooby-Doo. I mean, you have to take risks with the characters sometimes to make it interesting.

With that being said, I'm not really feeling the Velma/Shaggy angle at all. At least the Fred/Daphne angle has history. The former feels forced since i've always seen Shaggy as the Jughead of the group. Eh, i'll see where they'll go with it.

Yabba-Doo? I have no clue who that is at all. Lol. To be fair, a lot of this older Doo does go over my head, since I was a big Scooby fan as a kid. I watched the "Where Are You?" and "The 13 Ghosts" mostly.

Yabba-Doo appeared in the third season of "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo" in the third segment "Scrappy and Yabba-Doo" and is like a western version of Scooby. He appears to be Scooby's brother since Scrappy referred to him as "Uncle Yabba".

Sounds a bit familiar, but I'll look for a vid of it. I think it would work better if they don't show any of the others in the Doo family.

I think the character designs bite cheese and the CGI effects are too obvious and poorly incorporated.

Something about Fred is really..off in this version. What's up with his chin? Everybody else looks okay to me.

Do you guys honestly want to see Scrappy Doo in the series?

Unless it's some kind of joke like in the movie, no.

Nope. Going by A Pup Named Scooby Doo's continuity, Scooby only has 2 brothers: Skippy Doo and Howdy Doo, as well as a sister, Ruby Doo. Perhaps Yabba Doo (assuming that he hasn't been retconned out of existence by this time) is Scooby's cousin.

Some new info on the Scooby/Batman crossover:

I heard that and I'm really excited for it :) Funny enough I think Batman was wearing that exact same outfit the last time they did a crossover.

So is next week's episode a rerun or are they starting hiatus at the moment?

We have at least one more first run ep - "Battle of the Humonganauts". There was a promo after Tuesday's ep.

I caught it - apparently the gang will be battling giants (The Humonganauts) this time.

I'm sad it's only one segment, but the whole thing going down in a Bat-Mite episode is glorious.

i 100 percent agree with this. Id rather see Shaggy with some sort of hippie-like girlfriend, like they did in that Alien movie.

There was a SD: MI marathon yesterday afternoon showcasing the first 8 eps in a row. I found myself watching them and caught a few more things that I missed when the eps were shown weekly:

  • The mysterious disappearances: The original Mystery Inc wasn't the only group to go missing over the years in Crystal Cove. Even in the pilot, Velma mentions during the haunted museum tour that a group of colonists disappeared in the 1600s and another group vanished in 1765. Add that to the men who disappeared over the past 100 years (although they were attributed to Alice May) and the possibility that the current Mystery Inc. may end up suffering the same fate is obviously leading somewhere.
  • The Crystal Cove Caves: W've seen from day one that the caves are rather vast. They lead from the beach surface to beneath various parts of town. They've been used as hideouts and places to store various items (the crystal doorknobs, the barrels of Fruitmeir's dessert, Mancrab's staircase and kidnap victims) and a way to tunnel into various establishments (ie. the bank and Fruitmeir's shop). With so much action connected to the caves, we may find out there's more about the caves than what we've seen so far.
  • The Original Mystery Inc: It's been quite obvious that they share parallels to the current group. Apparently there began as friends interested in solving mysteries and during the course of their friendship, discovered attractions and romance between the members. So close were they, they came up with pins (for the guys) and pendants (for the girls) in the shape of a magnifying glass to show who they were. At least one of these pendants carried a photo of two of the members (Brad Chiles & Judy Reeves) - presumably they were an item and seem to parallel Fred and Daphne (more or less). That pendant was found in the caves - and had been there at least 30 years . They had a "Shaggy" in the form of Ricky Owens (along with a Scooby counterpart, "Mr. Peracles" the bird mascot) and Velma's counterpart in the form of Cassidy Williams. During the "Alicy May" ep, as the gang is looking at the yearbook, I noticed Cassidy wasn't wearing her pendant in her picture (the other members were wearing theirs). Her pic was cut out of the photo from the newspaper article. Could she have quit the group for some reason? Was she cut out of the pic out of anger or spite? Mr. E. seems to leave clues about the parallels to the two groups and warns that everything that's happening now has happened before. In the last clue - it's centered on Mr. Peracles; is there a link between the mascots of the groups? Did Ricky, Mr. P. and Cassidy have the same issues that Shaggy Scooby and Velma have now? Sure looks like it. Velma also seems very aliented right now and that also could figure into things.
  • Erasing History: Someone (or several someones) went to a lot of trouble to make the original Mystery, Inc. gang disappear from local records and yearbooks. If it weren't for the yearbook hidden in the school basement (Why was it there? How did Mr. E. know where to find it?) we wouldn't have had names to put to the faces. Who or what are they trying to protect?
  • Then there's Mr. E. himself. Apparently he wants the mystery of the disappearance of the original Mystery, Inc. out in the open, and leaves clues for the gang to find. Presumably he's the one who purposely lead the gang to Gatorsville and the fake merchandise scam, and even steals the engine of the Mystery Machine to force the gang to remain in town to solve that particular mystery. He seems to know how to get in touch with any member of the group at anytime. He (or a minon) followed the gang all around the Ren Faire to pass that clue to Velma (remember that guy dressed like an executioner? He was passing by onscreen several times throughout the ep) and he knew to give the hint on how to find Shaggy when he went missing. Are his/her motives really about solving the mystery of the missing Mystery Inc. predecessors, or is it tied to something far more sinister? Perhaps trying to get the gang to do his dirty work for him for an entirely different purpose.
  • Ultimately there seems to be a "divide and conquer" strategy at work; Mr. E. sent "Alice May" to deliberately cause division within the group - yet supposedly this was all part of getting the gang that much closer to the secret of their missing predecessors.
  • The Parents/Adults of Crystal Cove: Perhaps it's part of the comedy of this series, but I can't help but notice how ultimately useless most of them are. They are all about protecting the "revenue stream" their "haunted" town's repuation provides. The sheriff refused to get involved in anything that might have been due to some ghostly presence (despite people having gone missing or "spookified" children left to fend for themselves) and the Mayor definitely doesn't want to upset the status quo lest he not get reelected. Velma's parents' bread and butter is wrapped up in it as well with their museum and tours. This often results on the gang being blocked at every turn - occasionally to the point of being jailed or handcuffed to keep them away from their mystery solving hobby. In the pilot the parents seem to be actively trying to steer the kids away from that, not to mention hoping they'll find "new friends" to hang with. If the parents were afraid their kids would meet the same fate as their predecessors, why not just say so? Or is it really because they want things to stay the way they are?
  • Angel Dynamite: She encourages the gang and lets them use the radio station as a hangout. She's done some investigative work for them (finding out who bought the tires that matched that of the Ghost Trucker) and seems to be their biggest supporter. She acted strangely when the gang was talking about the original Mystery, Inc. gang - listening from the other side of the studio wall. Personally I think she is related to Cassidy Williams - possibly a kid sister or cousin or niece and she's supporting the gang because they seem to be the closest to getting the answers she's been seeking.
  • Fred's Mom: We've never seen her nor heard anything about her. We don't know if she's dead or divorced from Fred's dad (and if she were divorced, why leave and never visit her son?). Or could she be one of those who disappeared but never mentioned as such (yet)?
  • Fred's Dad: As mayor and aspiring politician, he has a lot invested in the town. He even wants Fred to follow in his political footsteps. He seemed to recognize the Mystery, Inc. pendant the gang brought back in the pilot judging by his reaction. It's very possible he was a contemporary classmate of that gang and may know more than he's telling.
  • The Curse of Crystal Cove: Is there really one? Will this show at some point take a supernatural turn? If we get an answer to where all those people who vanished, will it be something like they walked into a "pocket dimension" in the caves (sort of like walking into a closet or trap door but not coming back out)? Were they sacrifices to some entity in a "deal with the devil" scenerio (prosperity in exchange for their lives)? Or will there be a logical reason for all we've seen so far?

Long post is long.

Wow, I need to re-watch the episodes again for I missed most of that. XD

For Cassidy's pendant, maybe she did quit the team and throw her pendant somewhere. Maybe one of the gang will find it. I think Mr. Peracles is Mister E. Unless the E actually means/ stands for something then maybe not. :/
Re-watching tonight now!

By the way did you guys know that (in the original series at least) that Velma is younger then everyone? (Found that out in the character bios on the Witch's ghost special features). I wonder if its true in this series as well?

Yes. I remember her being about 15 (everyone else 16-17). I used to think Velma skipped a grade in school and ended up in the same classes as the rest of the gang.

"Mr. E" = "mystery"

.....*just got that* Ohh, wow I'm slow. XD

So eh? Wonder if Scooby Snax will be returning? Oh I hope so, Scooby and Shaggy love them and its been apart of the old shows forever. They were even in What's New Scooby-Doo? A shocking episode? Wonder what? Maybe Velma and Shaggy break up? Or Velma leaves the gang? I have a feeling it involves Velma :p

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
