Online conduct- What grinds your gears?

One that always gets me is when someone after getting schooled during a debate with another poster responds by simply saying "Whatever". To me saying "Whatever" translates to "I can't think of an intelligent response." or "I've got nothing." If all you have to contribute to the discussion now is "Whatever", then you might as well just say "You win".

Another one that grinds my gears is when someone follows up well thought out responses only with "opinion =/= fact" or "your opinion" and doesn't say anything else.

Also mods that feel their position of power gives them the right to insult other members. Thank goodness that doesn't happen here.

That first one gets on my nerves too. They don't really respond if the statement offends them, they just pop in and shout "That's only your opinion!" and doesn't give any actual input to the topic. Don't people have lives to attend to?
I am indeed grateful that I haven't come across the latter problem. The mods I go through on a Kingdom Hearts forum seem like dictators trying to demolish free speech sometimes, but nothing like plain out insulting the members.

The thing is that most internet discussions mainly revolve around opinions in the first place. So responding to something you don't like with nothing but "your opinion" is not only incredibly juvenile, it's also really redundant.

Quality is basically an opinion, correct? If I said that The Incredibles was better than Ratatoing it would still be an opinion, but it would be closer to a fact just based on the obvious: The Incredibles is one of Pixar's best films whle Ratatoing is just garbage. Is there anyone who wouldn't agree with me?

What irks me the most (and believe me I've seen this) are people with opinions of quality so far outside the norm that you wonder if this person is messing with everyone. When you try to counter someone like this with a well thought out reason why their way of thinking isn't shared by the vast majority it's most irritating to be met with "your opinion".

Only on the internet can someone get away with being that inane.

I disagree. Ratatoing is an absolute masterpiece and it's animation quality is beautiful compared to the crap you see Dreamworks and Pixar come out with. You are just incapable of truly appreciating and the fact that you think something like The Incredibles is superior to a great work like Ratatoing is proof that you just have poor taste.

I'm joking in case there is anyone who took me serious. I agree that Ratatoing isn't great.

If you want a variation- accusing someone of doing this when they haven't. Namely, someone makes a vague comment and someone else decides to lynch them for apparently offering a set in stone case of blasphemy. I'm not saying people should not consider how their words are likely to be interpreted, but too many times online have I made vague comments (including using terms like 'apparently', 'supposedly', etc which are used to make the fact clear) and been attacked for apparently thinking my comments are stone cold fact.

Yes, and then to justify their actions, they often will say "Why didn't you use imo in your sentence?''

IMO is an adjunct. Adjuncts in sentences are optional because they don't change the meaning of the sentence. Stop whining when people don't tack it on to every opinion they make.

You said it, you fat faced creep!

"I've never actually played this game, but I got a look at 15 seconds of the demo for it at my local toy store and I didn't like the graphics or the color scheme, so that qualifies it to be listed as the very worst video game of all time. The fact that the game sold millions of copies and was widely touted as a success is irrelevant, because the many, many people who bought the game, played it and loved it don't know what they're talking about."

I hate that, and this:

- If the game isn't rated T or M, it's the worst game ever, and whoever plays games that have ratings lower than T or M suck and are immature.

Good lord.... it's just a GAME. As with cartoons, I'll choose whatever I want as long as I'm enjoying it/them.

I hate the "Why you chose your current avatar" or "Why you choose your current signature" threads at any forums because Avatars and Sigs. are always changing.

Of course they do, but it's intriguing to hear the reasons why we do that. It makes for interesting conversation and provides enlightenment if we do not know what avatar a person has.

And just ignore those threads. If they were posing a problem, the mods woulda closed those a LONG time ago.:p

I hate it when you think of a very good thread for discussion and no-one replies...:(

Don't forget the corollary: "This game is rated M, so I can act however I want during online play, the more hateful and juvenile the better!"

I kept my Dr. Light avatar for five years, even after DC made the character a rapist. I did a little searching and some false starts after ditching it, but now I have the perfect avatar. I'm sure people want to be able to explain things like that.

Sig threads are a little less necessary, though, because if they aren't self-explanatory then they are pretty much pointless.

Yeah, I can tell if you sig is either a quote from someone, self promotion, promoting something else, or trying to be clever, no need to explain that. I'm more curious as to why people change their avatars myself.

Yeah, look at my signature it's a quote from one of my favorite people and I just happen to like it.

And those who changes their Avatar it's sorta their business but it is nice to know why they change their avatars. And for one thing I don't wanna stick to an Avatar forever, it's nice to have a little bit of variety in your life. Nothing wrong with that.

And what I hate is when people who know less should just be quiet, for one thing they don't know a lot and if they say anything that doesn't have any relevance to the subject and they're just there looking stupid or trying to supposedly "fit in".

I Don't Like It When People Capitalize Every Word In Their Sentences. Why Do Some People Like Capitalizing Every Word In Their Sentences? I Don't Get It. I Find It Very Annoying When People Do That. Especially On Forums. It Grinds My Gears.

Also when people re-write their user name or whatever at the end of their posts. Isn't that the point of the signature section? It's like the people who do it don't think we can't see their user name.

Argh, But That's Annoying. As An English Major, I Can't Stand To See This. It's Really Gear Grinding To Me.

This doesn't grind my gears, but yeah, I don't get why some people feel the need to do this. Why re-type your name at the end of all your posts when that's what the Signature function is for? A lazy person who still hunts and pecks like myself will gladly take any shortcut which requires less typing.

If you guys think about it, when people post their usernames at the end of every post, it could be a way of being formal... at least that's what it seems like to me anyways. It's never bothered me, actually.

Kind of bringing a few recent complaints togethor but- people who quote themselves in their sig....Wow. A funny AIM/IRC conversation, maybe. But when you quote yourself in your sig as if you made some profound statement, to me it just comes across as smug. If you want to put a personal opinion or message, sure. But quoting yourself? More like get over yourself.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
LWT (ITV1's London weekend affliate) news report on the alternative nightclub The Batcave from 1983.
