Last night, I asked James DeMarco, creator of Toonami, if he's interested in reviving Miguzi for it's 20th anniversary . This is his response:

I'm kinda glad I got a response from him, though! :)

As decent as Miguzi was, I don't think it's gonna come back anytime soon. Toonami has more name brand recognition compared to Miguzi. Plus, considering CN's notorious history of screwing over a lot of action cartoons, I don't see the point of bringing back Miguzi, especially during the streaming era.

This may change later on, but right now CN doesn't have enough programming or programming hours to run a block of any kind, let alone revive Miguzi.

Okay.... so... first of all, I want to say, when I was a kid watching Cartoon Network, whether it was an anime from Japan, a DC comic book cartoon, or an American action cartoon, all of it was enjoyable to me. All the shows were a variety of different art styles even if traditionally the anime is always more violent and mature than the American action which are more kid friendly in comparison. I enjoyed programming on Toonami and Miguzi equally, however, it did suck that Toonami got taken to Saturdays only, which may have pissed off a lot of long time Toonami fans initially, especially if you were a fan of anime rather than American action.

Now to get to the main point. Miguzi is never going to be looked upon fondly like Toonami or even Jetix... Jetix started 2 months earlier than Miguzi and outlived Miguzi for 2 extra years just about, and this hurts for me to say because I enjoyed most of the programming Miguzi had to offer... while I loved almost all the programming Toonami had year after year. But let's look at the reality.... the selection of programming that Miguzi had was not exclusive outside of maybe Code Lyoko, which was the biggest red flag.

Let's look at Toonami in comparison... when talking about Toonami's existence on CN most of its years, there was a lot of exclusive anime on there you could not find anywhere else on cable, especially in a time before social media existed and when dial up internet access was still the majority of households... it was the only place you could see Dragon Ball Z, Gundam, Techni Muyo, Sailor Moon, Zoids, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, etc. you name it, and it changed the game.

Jetix, while not as impactful as Toonami, Jetix at least had exclusive content like W.I.T.C.H., Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go, Ying Yang Yo, Get Ed, the newest at the time Power Rangers seasons, etc. and you even had reruns of Fox Kids programming and Kids WB programming on there as well. The block was just more badass with fresh content on there.

Miguzi aired Teen Titans, Codename: Kids Next Door, Krypto the Superdog, Juniper Lee, etc. on there, shows that were already on other timeslots. Totally Spies had already been airing CN separately a whole year before Miguzi came out. Static Shock was from Kids WB. Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, again, aired separately outside of Miguzi many times. TMNT (2003) and One Piece were already on FOX BOX/4Kids block. But you get the point. We can talk about Toonami being more mature compared to Miguzi being more kid friendly, but none of that is the reason why I believe Miguzi wasn't as successful. It's all about the exclusivity. Miguzi lacked exclusives... something that Toonami and even Jetix were strong at which made those blocks more memorable. So outside of Code Lyoko, there wasn't as much exciting or wow like to look forward to on Miguzi when the shows could already be seen outside the block or elsewhere.

That’s mostly true. Even Code Lyoko did eventually air outside of Miguzi (especially after the block ended). For example look at the fall 2005 schedules and you will see they aired Code Lyoko and Yu-Gi-Oh GX in the 10 pm hour before Adult Swim on weekdays. Otherwise though, those two shows were the main draws for Miguzi, since they were really the only ones that aired premieres on Miguzi. Even GX switched back and forth with Toonami for premieres starting in the second season though.

It was a bit similar to why TOM3’s first year was not as successful as it could have been. Shows like Rurouni Kenshin which you remember as Toonami exclusives got moved to SVES for new episodes, and there were even times in 2003 and 2004 when DBZ and YYH were SVES exclusives.

Having too many blocks going at the same time can be dangerous because you end up competing with yourself. I loved SVES, but it was definitely draining the life out of Toonami. New episodes of Justice League and Teen Titans were airing on SVES, and Teen Titans never aired on weekday Toonami; its weekday afternoon debut was on the first Miguzi schedule. Eventually Toonami ended up replacing SVES on Saturday, but with a much shorter schedule that ended up jettisoning the vast majority of SVES’ great and varied lineup in favor of months of movies and Kids WB imports like Jackie Chan and Astro Boy.

It seems like Toonami only found its footing when they finally settled on a four hour lineup with Miguzi and SVES show Teen Titans making its Toonami debut with new episodes of season two continuing from where SVES left off. This left Miguzi in an unenviable position, where they almost never aired any new Teen Titans episodes. I believe one episode premiered there on a special occasion but it never had a whole season premiere on weekdays.

Maybe because Toonami licensed already completed anime and superhero cartoons frequently on weekdays, they had the luxury of just airing 65 new episodes of Tenchi in a row. That sort of thing wasn’t really the case with Miguzi since they only really aired ongoing toyetic anime like Yu-Gi-Oh GX and Pokemon, which needed season breaks if they were going to premiere five episodes a week. Pokemon didn’t even get to premiere seasons like Battle Frontier on Miguzi. They got Battle Frontier reruns, but so did Toonami. They got Pokemon Chronicles as well, but so did Toonami, and Toonami aired the episodes first.

Cn doesnt need miguzi. They need superchunk. Or cartoon cartoons.

The Voyo-exclusive Romanian dub of Garfield and Friends goes on with the second season now being relased. I was afraid they will forget about the show after only one season.

As someone who's Portuguese, it just bugs me again that we lost. I wanted Portugal to win this time because this is Ronaldo's last, but no, we think Ronaldo has devolved significantly, and we lost against Spain.
