"Dragon Ball Kai" FUNimation Home Video Release News & Discussion

I like the sound of an All-Star Ginyu Force. Perhaps he's going to get people from other regions. I'd be amused if Kyle Hebert was Captain Ginyu for uh... obvious reasons. But I'm curious who else he may be able to get from LA, New York and dare I say... Vancouver? Looking forward to it.

Order complete (for this and many other things). Don't worry, wallet, on the bright side, I saved you $40.50 plus the Got Anime! discount. (I honestly expected to order/spend/save a lot more, but this was just what I've been waiting to get, and considering how hard the wait was, I may pre-order some upcoming solicitations in the next 2 weeks)

That was the point. ;)

I'd prefer something more along these lines.

Captain Ginyu - Kyle Hebert
Jiece - Johnny Yong Bosch / Yuri Lowenthal
Burter - Vic McNogina / Travis Willingham
Recoome - Troy Baker / J. Michel Tatum
Guido - Mike Sinterniklaas

Oh man.
I just started watching the Blu-Ray, and having already seen some of Japanese episodes, I got giddy seeing those Episode previews.

I just have to ask:

Out of total curiosity, is Vegeta still saying that "it's over 9000", or is the dub using the correct "over 8000" this time?

Also, someone mentioned that they wished they would "go all the way" and retranslate certain terms. In other words, are they still saying "power level" in this dub ("sentou ryoku" literally means "fighting power")?

It's the correct Over Eight Thousand. They're still using 'power level', and continue to lack use of 'ki'.

I just finished disc 1 of the Blu-Ray and I'll probably start disc 2 tonight.

Thinking about the introductions for the next 13 episodes..... I know Laura Bailey will definitely be Dende again.... It looks like Chris Forbis has left so Dodoria's more than likely going to be new, though I can't think of who should play him.... (Bob Carter maybe?) Since they seem to be recasting a few of Sabat's older roles this time around, I'm really hoping it'll be J. Michael Tatum as Zarbon.

Question: Just to make sure, Chris Rager wasn't Enma-Daio before the Kai dub; it was Chris Sabat or someone else before, right?

In Raging Bast Mike McFarland played Dodoria. Chris Rager has played Enma-Daiô for a few years now, I believe.

Woot from Episode 5 to 6 epic filler skip! Yay!
And I can't not help thinking of Abridged with certain scenes now.
Colleen does a awesome job bringing a innocence to Gohan.

Likely, indeed likely. There's also the general fan consensus that Super Decisive Battle for the Entire Planet Earth takes place in a world where Gokû and the gang all survived that battle.

You think a video game would try to do more of these What-Ifs and see where they'd go.

Well, if things played out this way, the Earth's safety would probably come down to Piccolo having the chance to fuse with Kami and a very, very lucky epic spirit bomb, as a sufficiently strong one is going to devastate its target no matter who's throwing it. It would've been rough even with a healthy Goku around, although I suppose there is the special chamber at Kami's place. This is DBZ so we can definitely assume that everybody trains as much as possible. But yeah, no SSJ level anyway unless #17 or #18 kill a bunch of friends first.

Android #16 would've been a very interesting wild card, though. For all we know he could've turned out like #8 in the end. Also tricky is Cell's fate in this scenario, considering how much he owes his fate to Trunks (he needed his time machine) and Vegeta's idiocy. Neither would be around since Vegeta would've been either killed on Earth (a living Piccolo definitely wouldn't have let him leave) or owned on Namek.

Well, my assumption is that Gokû is Gokû, and he'd continue training nonetheless. Of course, it's not sure how much a difference that would make. If Vegeta's dead after the fight on Earth, that means no Trunks, which might mean either Bulma or none would travel back in time too give Son his medicine.

The remerging with God, however, is also something to keep in mind.

If we're going no holds barred with this:

Captain Ginyu - Kyle Hebert
Jiece - Matthew Erickson / Jeff Nimoy
Burter - Roger Craig Smith / Kirk Thornton
Recoome - Scott Freeman
Guldo - Dan Woren / Michael Sorich

I think they would have to face Frieza soon or later anyway. Remember, Frieza wants immortality, so if Vegeta was kill in battle that means Frieza and his empire will be coming to Earth instend of Namek to find the Dragonballs there.

As Jacob said, they still use "power level." Except for one slip up, though, the non-Saiyan characters use either "power" or "energy" when referring to ki.

Other things that are still carried over from the previous dub are Tien, Tri-Beam, and King Kai.

EDIT: Oh, and Launch. But that's the only time she'll be talked about so meh.

I really don't like the lack of differentiating between "Ki" and "Power Levels." It gives viewers the mistaken impression that they are the same thing. When in the actual story, "Power Levels" are a numerical readout which consistently prove to be unreliable. If the characters continue to call "Ki" "Power Level" then in a newbie's head, it's the same numerical readout that never works.

Anyway, I saw the DVD in Wal-Mart and just had to buy it. I'm planning on going back and getting the Blu-Ray but I don't have a BR player and I want to see the show now.

So after watching the first disc, I have a few thoughts to jot down. I watched the English dub exclusively. I'm not particularly interested in the Japanese version of Dragon Ball Z Kai... Kai, to me, is just a catalyst for a near perfect redub of the series. With the superior English dub and the lack of filler, Dragon Ball Z Kai is a much better show in English than Dragon Ball Z. The Japanese version of the original Z has always been more or less perfect. It doesn't require a redub. There's nothing there for me in Kai with the Japanese version.

  • Bulma sounds exactly like Tiffany Volmer, but older and less *****y. Overall, a good casting change.
  • Yajirobe's voice is a lot deeper than in the English dub of Dragon Ball and the original Dragon Ball Z.
  • Mike McFarline's performance as Roshi is not as good as it was in the English dub of Dragon Ball. It's a little higher pitched and more throaty. It's really off-putting.
  • Fotuneteller Baba's voice actress is Linda Young. In the original Dragon Ball Z English dub, she was voiced by somebody else. However, Linda Young did play Baba in the English dub of Dragon Ball and the redub of Z seasons 1-3. This kind of fits in with my theory of FUNimation's attempt at keeping Z Kai consistent with the English dub of Dragon Ball.
  • Not easily adjusting to the new Gohan. Miles better than Stephany Nadolny's portrayal, but nowhere near perfect. I can't help but hear Luffy. And I keep expecting to hear Nadolny when I see him open his mouth. It's going to take a while to get used to the new Gohan.
  • Piccolo sounds like Zoro. Sabat really toned down the rasp and growl for Z Kai. I am completely neutral on this. I have no thoughts other than I notice it.
  • This is my first time watching Kai. I only watched the first episode of the original Japanese version raw, then completely lost interest. I am loving the pace, but find myself missing a lot of the filler. I really like the filler in the Saiyan saga. Particularly Gohan and the Humans' filler episodes. Lunch tracking down Tenshinhan and cooking food for him was so cute. And Yamcha playing baseball was really fun. Not to mention all the character development we're missing out on with Gohan.
  • I. FREAKING. LOVE. SEAN. SCHEMMEL'S. GOKU. He is really taking this role seriously. And by seriously, I mean totally goofy. This feels so much more like Goku than the original English dub of Z. It's also much more consistent with his performance at the end of Dragon Ball. Hell, with Goku's character in general from the English dub of Dragon Ball.

More later, I guess.

Interesting news about the Ginyu Force. I never had too much of a problem with Sabat's Burter and Jeice or Bill Townsley's Guldo, but I'm REALLY hoping they get good recasts for Reecoome and Captain Ginyu.

And if they're recasting Dodoria, I also really hope they recast Zarbon. Sabat just lost his mark on how to voice that character.

Now, will someone find a way to contact Sabat and ask him about Freeza's voice? If he knows what he's doing, he'll have Linda Young use a deeper tone like she used to with Freeza's 2nd and final form voices 24/7. And speak like a polite gentleman, of course. :p

Your best shot.

I still think their best shot is just to recast that role entirely. Get a dude to do it, geez. It can't be too late, the second set doesn't come out for four months.

It'd be awkward for Frieza to have his usual "woman" voice in the Bardock flashback and a new manlier voice when he appears in the Namek saga.

It would hardly be the first inconsistency in FUNimation history (or the first 'redubbing' for FUNimation's Dragon Ball).
