DKA Presents - "Batman Beyond: Stripped" Talkback, Part 2 (Spoilers)

I meant the one above, which you provided a few days ago... But thanks for the others, anyway; I'll be sure to try and e-mail Kris later today with my demands. :D

Damn, I fell a victim to my own gag. Curses.

You should check out Justice League Unlimited #37 before it sells out, guys. It's got the Spectre, Batman, Deadman and a few others... It just struck me as something you would enjoy. It's written by Matt Wayne, who wrote some JLU episodes, and it's well worth a read.

Glad we got our versions out of the way before Matt did! It's one thing being fan project, but worse when it looks like you've stolen ideas from the pros!

I'm surprised the Spectre was never used in JLU, and that it has taken this long for him to pop up in the extended JLU canon (as far as I'm aware, as I've not read the JLU comics). Will look out for it.

Just thought I'd be annoying and bump this thread again... Are you guys on top of the next few strips, out of curiousity?

Last I heard from Kris, is he is working on batch; he's colouring a set at once with the intent to run straight from here to the end. So he's still working, but I think he wants to have a straight finish rather than anymore stops.

This last chapter was a fairly good cliffhanger. With any luck, the final chapter will be 10 odd strips without delays.

I was just wondering if you could give us an update, James. I know genius takes time and shouldn't be rushed, but it's been almost a month without a new post from you concering the strip. Take your time in responding.

"Just wonderin' where the newspaper boy is. Wonderin' when he's gonna bring me some good news." Herbert, when used properly, can be a very good comedic tool.

I second that. I'm desperate to see how it ends! :)

I'm afraid its all down to Kris now. It was written, drawn and scripted up earlier this year, just out colorist has had a lot of real life to distract him with. I emailed him a couple of days back and yesterday he apologised for the lack of progress and hoped to get some done ASAP.

We have talked about doing one final epilogue strip on the epilogue, just because we chatted about one idea a loooong time ago which Kris is eager for us to visualise. So the long delay might bring a bonus episode yet. That what I DO have to script, but given we have about 9-10 episodes left to show before then, its not an immediate issue!

Sorry for the delay!

No, no, take your time, we appreciate the work you put in a lot! :) That said, today is a year on from when I first started reading the strips, and it would've been cool to have a new one today. Last year, #49 came out today and I was hooked from then on. I was thinking of posting this a few days ago to spur you into action again :p but I forgot, so I say it today, the day it's most appropriate. Pat yourselves on the back, anyway, because the panels have only got better since then!

I'll see if I can give Kris a nudge, for I too am desperate to see it all done!

Brace yourselves.
*DRUM ROLL*

And....KAPOW!!!!! DKA is back
Why do I get the impression that the first panel is the creators' warning about the consequences of all our pestering for new strips? :)
Seriously though, great strip. Its nice to see that amidst the story progression, you took the time to tie up the Kara/Tea thread with a moment that's actually kind of moving. Is is wrong that I kind of like Tea more than I like Kara? :)

I've been meaning to write a post for a while now about how impressed I've been that, looking back, DKA has been able to build such an exciting and action packed story with only a few fight scenes. Up till now (Nightwing vs Scarecrow aside) the only one "Batman" has punched has been Dick Grayson! Most of the real "action" sequences have revolved around dialogue exchanges and character interaction, but the narrative still moves like a roller coaster.
Artistically, its an interesting way of presenting the Superhero medium and really gives moments like this strip's first panel, (or the scene where Kar- er, I mean Tea, is shot) so much more "punch" (bad pun somewhat intended).
Much credit for this has to go to the writer of course, but I think sometimes we forget how important the artist is in making a static scene exciting and involving. Thanks to you both very much.

Great work as always and can't wait to see where the next twist takes the story.

More like the readers warning to the creators to get on with the show.. or else.

Not really. I think Tea was a more interesting character than Kara in JLU, despite Kara's growth in the final season. I do think that the way the strip has driven Tea gives an added layer of grey to the question of what's good and what's evil; we know how Batman has always questioned the Huntress' methods, and Superman, Batman's - so as a group, how unified would the JLU be on the question of redemption of league's major foes, who was not just antagonistic, but stood for a regieme that was planning to debase them?

I thought that giving Tea a more sympathetic storyline and painting the League as the perpetrators of inconsistency was a nice payoff for her work in the story, particularly in having the character fight on for an honest need for redemption regardless of the distrust she gets from her fellow brethren; and that despite Clark's inability to reconcile the antagonist taking the place of his lost cousin, she's still looking to prove herself worthy of the mantle and his approval to the very end.

Nature of the medium. When you have a complicated story, limited manpower and very few panels, fights become a burden to the story, writers, artists and readers. I mean, a decent fight would realistically span a month of story - do readers want that? Does the artist want to have a month of squeezing dynamic fights into 5-6 tiny boxes? Does the writer want to hinder his story with a fight which, rather than ups the pace, slows it?

Fights aren't good for sequential strips, so its best to hint at the battle and suck up the drama that comes from it. One of the fears of this strip has been that you never get to truly show any "showdowns". We've had Nightwing Vs Scarecrow, a short Tea vs Le Fey, a vehicle showdown of Bat-vessels vs Le Fey, and a brief Batman vs Tea (as Batman Beyond). So we look to add the pace through drama than action.

Artistically, its an interesting way of presenting the Superhero medium and really gives moments like this strip's first panel, (or the scene where Kar- er, I mean Tea, is shot) so much more "punch" (bad pun somewhat intended).

I'd always envisaged Terry ramming his hand through Le Fey's head, as I always had Tea/Kara being shot in the gut. It's funny how these key moments come early on and shape so much around it.

Much credit for this has to go to the writer of course, but I think sometimes we forget how important the artist is in making a static scene exciting and involving. Thanks to you both very much.

Given we're the same person, thank you. Though Kris needs credit on both parts, playing editor to my muse and adding much needed power to some rather rushed inks!

Great work as always and can't wait to see where the next twist takes the story.

I'm pleased to say we have a couple more twists before the end. One of which may be rather controversial.

Hmm... It can't be that easy; it just can't... I hope it's explained how Terry was able to do that to Le Fey, and what has now become of her. We'd better see her without her mask! :p Also, did they leave Tea or take her with them? With 7 strips left, I hope we see more twists and action. I'm aware that around 5 of them may be the epilogue, but I hope you guys don't rush the final product. That said: this is great; please keep it up! :D

As I recall (and honestly, my memory of what finally went in and went out is vague since these were done so long ago), that's covered next strip.

We do our best. There is chat between myself and Kris about doing a further epilogue strip, but I'm still uncertain whether the fan fun of it really weighs up to the necessity. So maybe 8 or so to go. We'll see. Definitely one more next week, Kris said he'll have that ready for then (if its not pretty much done already).

Oh, and as usual, I spot a typo I should have caught way too late in the day. Oh wellz, you aren't paying for this, and we don't get paid. Deal. :)
