"Darkwing Duck (General Comic)" Series Talkback (Spoilers)

There's various stories around the net that the former editor plotted the first arc and polished a lot of the dialogue, but left the company before the last issue. Does anyome know if there Is there any truth to this? If this editor was overseeing and polishing Brill's work, it makes sense why now we're getting so many inconsistencies, to say nothing of terrible dialogue and way too much exposition. When you have an artist as amazing as James Silvani, let his art tell the story and stop covering his beautiful drawings with your stupid words.

I agree with the notion that if James Silvani and Andrew Dalhouse weren't handling the art on this book, it wouldn't be getting as heavily praised. I'm worried about Rescue Rangers; the art looks amazing, but if Brill can't get Darkwing right... Rescue Rangers is a MUCH tougher dynamic.

God I'm sick of the callbacks to Quackwerks. We get it, it was a good idea, but let it, and the Taurus Bulba thread, die. The explanation of Morgana's memory loss was ridiculous, and having Launchpad deliver it was totally out of character. I absolutely hated it.

The fishing page was still stupid, no matter the foreshadowing. I'd have rather had a page where Darkwing DOES something besides stand around looking sad.

It seems like Brill is intent on turning this into a real superhero book instead of Darkwing. If that's what he wants to write maybe Boom should let him do one of there Stan Lee books, but for the love of god, get him off Darkwing.

Rescue Rangers is a MUCH tougher dynamic.

There really is no dynamic to Rescue Rescue, which I think makes it all the more tougher. IMHO the characters in that show were incredibly cliche and superficial, unlike Darkwing, where the characters at least felt sincere and human. Rescue Rangers is going to have great art, but I think it's probably going to be a syrupy mess full of silly fan shout-outs.

As for Darkwing...get Launchpad out of that suit, have Darkwing grow a pair, quit the exposition and lets just cut to the action. This Negaduck/Magica stuff is just too wordy. It's not really in Nedaduck's nature to talk talk talk talk talk all the time like this. So getting two issues that begin with him spouting massive exposition is a little much.

So issue 6 came out yesterday. Thoughts? Comments? I definitely enjoyed it much more than the last issue.

It felt like a cleverly designed ripoff of The Invincible War :D .

Bowling Ball Darkwing crack me up lol.

I was expecting Darkwarrior Duck Having a more dramatic entrance or Save The Best For Last tho probably that would be for NegaDuck.

It was not bad but nothing too spectacular, hopefully the next issue we see some action.

Re: Issue #6 -- pretty good, characterization-wise: 1. Makes sense that DW would be distraught by the backlash against him; in turn, it's nice to see him decisively resolve to take action and face the situation -- felt like a conscious skin-shedding of the "mopey" DW folks have raised concern over. And it was so like him to address the public in such an egotistic, spotlight-hogging fashion. 2. Didja see Negaduck's heedless, unrepentant, wanton, senseless implementation of a giant mallet at one point, and a chainsaw at another? ;)

I had faith that the fishermen scene in #5 was going somewhere. DW's line, "Show yourself ... Liquidator ... right?" and the accompanying expression in his eyes (courtesy of Silvani) were priceless.

Nice to Morgana and DW "teamed up" and fighting crime at one another's side once again. And nice to see DW, LP, Gos, and Morgana in the Mallard household living room -- evoked the show. And I'll admit my gratification for being "fan-serviced" by seeing Morgana in Drake's personal life. Just always wanted to see them end up "together" full-time. Guess I may as well admit to myself that I'm an infernal 'shipper. ;)

Oh, and I am loving the clear-cut acknowledgement of "Life, the Negaverse, and Everything"! ("I figure if I, just one inter-dimensional doppelganger of Darkwing Duck...")

Just would like to the rest of the Fearsome Five, besides Negaduck, and other regular villains from the series, get their turn to be the crux of a story again, and not keep being relegated to cameos. I realize you can't do everything in one issue, though!

But still, poor Fenton. Must be tearing his hair out looking for the Gizmoduck suit! ;)

With every new issue, I can't refrain from reading the comic as soon as I'm out of the shop and in my car, finishing the whole thing even before turning the engine on and driving home! That says something.

It was much better than last issue...I'm guessing editorial really came in and grabbed the reins after last issue, and maybe brought Brill back in line. It's nice to see DW doing something, even if once again we didn't see him doing anything but talking, at least he tried to take charge of the destruction of his reputation.

I still think the fishing page from last issue would have been better cut for more DW, but at least we got a little more on the subplot. I think we all know where it's going, and it's weird that they'd have Negaduck and Magica sharing the stage with another villain by the end of the arc; they're certainly big enough villains to have their own endgame without bringing in someone else...but we'll see where it goes.

I still think characters (particularly Launchpad) are speaking out of character, but overall this issue was better than #5, although still not as tight as the first arc, despite Brill's complete lack of explanation of the Bulba blender. I have to say though, Silvani continues to bring it with every issue...half the fun is the little Disney Easter eggs he gives us. (The Pinnochio topiary and the office workers' dwarf figurine collection were priceless) as were all the different Darkwing's he gave us. (Is he calling back to his Muppet roots with that Fozzie Darkwing in the double-page invasion spread?)

All in all, not a bad sophmore issue from the sophmore arc, although I'm still wary of where the next issue will take us.

It sounds like you think Ian Brill wanted this issue to be a complete carbon copy of the last one, and he had no intention of developing the story beyond where it was in the last issue.

I wonder if when Tad Stones was producing "Duck Blind," Eisner stepped in to make sure DW stopped being mopey and took charge of the situation while the script was being written.

Anyway some comments I felt I would contribute about the comic in general that I've been meaning to state:

1. While I hope there is more of it, good to see Liquidator operating outside the Fearsome Five/Four for a change.

2. I can certainly see why there is some belief that the comic is relying too much on the Ducktales, I'd say that Magica's usage works. I mean Darkwing Duck has a sorceress girlfriend, so it makes sense that Negaduck would be working with an evil sorceress as well. Might as well use an existing one rather than just making one up.

3. Have to admit, though that in light of the recent story, that I really hope Negaduck and Darkwarrior Duck square off.

Still digging the comic.

Especially digging this cameo:

Hmm, what happened mere weeks after Gadget's cameo? This is a good thing, oh yes.

Well, I looked at this again, and thought it was only my imagination...But now that other people noticed it, there may be very well another cameo in that picture.

AH!!! The colors are wrong, but I don't have anymore doubt. Now I'm hoping this means the very same thing :p

EDIT : James Silvani confirmed this cameo to me! :)

One of the protesters also has a "Bring Back Bonkers!" sign, and there's a handful of other Disney references in the issue.

I don't know, I personally think a lot of these are just for fun, but I wouldn't be too surprised if at least one of these jokes was a hint for a future series.

My local comic book shop finally got what I was missing, so I got to catch up. This has been a fun ride so far. The fifth was kind of a step down, but the most recent issue has made up for it's melodrama

I don't know how much faith you can put in the cameos being hints of new series; sure, we had a Rescue Rangers cameo that turned into a new series, but James Silvani also drew the 7 Dwarfs and Pinnochio into issue #6; does anyone seriously think we're going to be seeing a series based on either of these? They're most likely just for fun; I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Well, we've had five issues of mopey Darkwing, so I don't know if it was that much of a stretch. I'm basically just pointing out that issue #5 felt like it was a complete mess, but #6 seems to have refocused. You could say maybe it's editorial that dropped the ball last issue, and not Brill, but that wouldn't make sense since he's the one credited with writing it.

Issue 6 has probably been my favourite of the series thus far. Straight-forward story where we learn that a villain team has a plan and see how it conflicts with our hero, who then sets out to fix it, only to be confronted with an army. Everyone kicks into action mode, and I'm left wanting more.

I still feel like Brill is just propping things up rather than exploring them though. These Darkwings could have been interesting characters in of themselves, but instead, they're one-liners. Bowling ball? Really? Nothing much to say about that.

With Darkwarrior, Negaduck, Magica, Morgana, Gozmoduck and Launchpad AND DW AND the big not-so-mystery villain in the next two issues...it's all a bit too much flash and not enough substance.

But still - best issue yet. Progress.

Covers for #9 are up. Looks like DW is finally going to see what FOWL has been up to, then confront the 'Mad Men' logo and a guy who looks like Steelbeak that is really Steelbeak.

Frankly, I'm kinda annoyed how the plot summary is addressing 'topping epics with epics', but not stating that this isn't exactly a good thing.

Perhaps someone can post these images onto the thread itself later?

Finally, issue seven delivers what we’ve all been waiting to see – Darkwing and Negaduck in combat. Unfortunately seeing Magica and Morgana battle was pretty one-sided and disappointing. I caught the Disney villain motif on Magica’s armor, but still found it annoyingly reminiscent of all those Mattel Ninja Skeletor toys that have been made over the years, and awkwardly worked into episodes of He-Man.

Paddywack’s intro was random. Brill did a poor job of showing us just what was “wrong” with the water around St Canard. Was it bubbling? Was it hurting people? Were folks drowning? This could have been a one-issue story in of itself, but instead it’s been jammed into the middle of this Negaduck/Magica tale.

Magica’s dialogue was more consistently “Russian” sounding in this issue, but overall it’s gone in and out. The Quiverwing Quack alter-origin was….interesting? I don’t know…for a story about multiple Darkwings we really aren’t getting to know any of them. Darkwarrior has basically been nothing more than a cameo, and he’s the one we care the most about!

Silvani’s still not getting Morgana entirely right, but otherwise the issue was nice to look at.
Darkwing taunting Negaduck for not coming straight to his house and murdering him and Goz made no sense to me at all. I still question Brill’s decision to make Drake’s previously flimsy secret identity such a major story-point.

 If you just read it through in three minutes and don't let yourself care or question what's going on, it's enjoyable enough. But if you actually try and think about the story, or the gags, it's a frustrating experience.

Anyone else read this issue?

Here's a fun article I wrote on why Ruby and Jade from Sofia The First are good characters.
Okay hear me out, Isn't it kind of crazy how CN never thought about doing a Kids Next Door x Teen Titans OG crossover back in the 2000s? There's five members of Sector V, five titans, and they both have super cool HQs. I'm telling you guys, a TT and KND crossover would've been so epic!
