Characters going by different names

[Cartman]

I'm sure we've all notice that in many cartoons, a recurring character is known by a different name than what he/she usually goes by. Here are some examples:

Yosemite Sam - Went by Schultz in BIG HOUSE BUNNY

Olive Oyl - Princess Olivia in KICKIN' THE CONGA ROUND

Pegleg Pete - Sylvester Macaroni in THE SYMPHONY HOUR

Bluto - Barnacle Bill in BEWARE OF BARNACLE BILL

Sylvester - Thomas in TWEETIE PIE

 

[Jack]

Goofy is George Geef in a number of early 50's cartoons.

Tom (in Tom and Jerry) - Jasper in "Puss Gets the Boot"

Spike - Butch or Killer in number of shorts

Speedy Gonzales - not much different, but in "Cattails for Two", Gonzales was spelled as "Gonzalez"

Yosemite Sam - Went by Schultz in BIG HOUSE BUNNY

Well, technically his name in that one was Sam Schultz. Different, yes, but it's in the same league as every other unique name he received in his more-stylized roles.

 

[Tom Stathes]

A Different example of "name changing" of this sort appears in the issue of the b/w Tom & Jerry series and Cubby Bear being reissued in 8mm and 16mm for home use and TV distribution. In the early T.V. days, these two series were known as Dick & Larry (Tom & Jerry) and Brownie Bear (Cubby).

Toro and Pancho in "Tijuana Toads". When they were reissued as "Texas Toads" to keep it politically correct, they were renamed Fatso and Banjo.

And of course in Tweety's first cartoon he was unofficially named Orson.

Pepe Le Pew was named Stinky in "Scent-Imental Over You".

Sylvester was called Herman in "A Hick, A Slick And A Chick".

And Goofy was called Mr. Walker and Mr. Wheeler in "Motor Mania".

Wow. I knew Sylvester was called Thomas in "Tweetie Pie," but I didn't know he was Herman in "A Hick, a Slick and a Chick." I didn't even know he was in that cartoons. Some other characters to mention are...

Gossamer: Called "Rudolph" in "Water Water Every Hare"

Marvin the Martain: Called Commander X-2 in most of his earlier appearances.

Pepe le Pew: Called "Henry" in the "Odor-Able Kitty."

Sylvester was "Tom" in his first cartoon, I believe.

In Scarlet Pumpernickel, Sylvester was also "Basil Rathbone"

Egghead was named Elmer Fudd in an early cartoon (technically this one is debatable if you think Egghead was simply an early Elmer).

Daffy Duck - numerous alter egos (Dripalong Daffy, Duck Dodgers, Dorlock Holmes, Duck Drake, Robin Hood, Cluck Trent/Stupor Duck, the Scarlet Pumpernickel, Duck Twacy, etc.)

Porky Pig - same as Daffy (Comedy Relief, Eager Young Space Cadet, Watkins, the Lord High Chamberlain, etc.)

Yosemite Sam - his name changed to fit his roles (Sam Schulz, Riffraff Sam, Colonel Sam, Sam von Schamm, etc.)

Sam Sheepdog was called "Ralph" (the name later given to his wolfish nemesis) in Don't Give Up The Sheep.

In Bedevilled Rabbit, the Tazmanian Devil is referred to as Claude by the She-Devil.

I just remembered another one...

Beaky Buzzard - in "Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid", nobody seemed to be able to agree on a name. Bob Clampett called him the Snerd Bird, while Beaky's mother in the film referrs to him as Killer.

And for the record, I always thought that Marvin the Martian had no name in his first cartoons - the card that identifies him in "The Hasty Hare" reads "Commander, Flying Saucer X-2". Therefore, he's just a commander, and X-2 is probably the ID number of his ship.

I just remembered another one...

Beaky Buzzard - in "Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid", nobody seemed to be able to agree on a name. Bob Clampett called him the Snerd Bird, while Beaky's mother in the film referrs to him as Killer.

Beaky was also called Killer in "The Bashful Buzzard".

Another early name is Droopy's in his first appearance, "Dumb Hounded", where he is called 'Happy Hound'.

I recall an instance when Rocky was refered to as Bugsy but I can't remember where (or when).

Bugs is known as The Masked Marauder in "Buckaroo Bugs"

Another early name is Droopy's in his first appearance, "Dumb Hounded", where he is called 'Happy Hound'.

Droopy also goes by a different name in NORTHWEST HOUNDED POLICE, where he is known as Sgt. McPoodle.

 

[Tintin]

Sylvester as "Georges" in "Hoppy Go Lucky"

Bugs Bunny as "King's fool" in "Knighty-Knight Bugs"

 

[Bobby B]

In the Little Lulu cartoon "Beau Ties", Tubby is named Fatso.
