Discontinued/Rare DVDs That Need to be Re-Released

Plenty of movies and shows have been released that were popular among only a small number of people, had a cult following, or had a limited run. These DVDs became hard to find and other fans were unable to get a hold of them. Now if you can find them, they're at really unreasonable prices.

One of these is Invader ZiM: Complete Invasion. Every now and then this set or one of its volumes will show up at a reasonable price on Amazon or Hot Topic, otherwise expect to see it listed at over $150, and that's without the house box and extras disc. I picked up one of the last 2 at $27 when they popped up on Amazon this summer, but now it's listed as $180. For fans who have yet to pick it up, they'll have a hard time doing so.

Then there's Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. The OVA was first released in 1999, edited, and then it was re-released in 2004, unedited. Both of these are hard to find now. I've had the edited VHS since 2003, and was unaware it had been re-released unedited on DVD until it was discontinued. Now the 1999 edition goes for $165 and the 2004 edition goes for $150. And the movie's only 58 minutes. It's been another 6 six years and I wish whoever has the rights now would re-release it. And it would sure be a long-shot, but I'd love to see "True Blue" on blu-ray.

TMNT 2K3: Ninja Tribunal is becoming hard to find and many sites have it going for about $40, but you can still find it for under $10. Some of the crappy season 3 volumes can be hard to find as well. Hopefully Nick re-releases the all of TMNT 2K3 properly.

The Sonic X season sets released before the saga sets are also becoming hard to find. Season 5 goes for $100 on some sites and season 6 isn't nearly as bad, but still much more expensive than not too long ago. I'm glad I picked these up when I did as the prices rose only shortly after.

That's all from me for now, but what DVDs would you guys like to see re-released because of rarity?

Wow...and I got both for only $4 each when they fell into RightStuf's bargain bin earlier this year.

But yes yes YES, the Sonic OVA desperately needs a re-re-release, both previous releases go for some of the most insane prices I've seen for an anime movie. Sadly, ADV (the one who distributed it) might have let their license for the movie expire years ago, and, even if they hadn't, the company is pretty much dead anyways.

...I should ask on Funimation's message boards about it, they've been pretty good about picking up old licenses from failing anime companies.

I had no idea there would be such a demand for Sonic X.

TMNT-2K3, though, is understandable. Shoot, I shouldn't have dragged my feet on that for so long. Nick won't be re-releasing those; I don't think they'll have home video rights to anything they didn't make.

I picked up Zim when it first came out; I figured something like this would happen.

I don't have much knowledge of what's rare and what isn't, but Clone High should be reprinted, I'll say that much. So should ReBoot, but that'll never happen.

Besides season 5, the other seasons are still around $10 each. And heck, if you look hard enough, you probably wouldn't have much trouble finding season 5 in a bargain bin somewhere.

The Sonic Movie rotted on bargain bins for $10 for many years, thats how I got my copy. Its not even that great of a movie. Wish I was living in the states since I used to see them for dirt cheap at used DVD stores all the time. Really if you didn't pick it up it was your fault.

Invader Zim I bought the entire series off Amazon for like 15 or 20 bucks barely a year ago.

Did Sonic X release all its seasons on DVD? If so its a shame I never bought them, oh well I'm sure they'll be re-released.

Nick acquired TMNT 2k3 so they can release it on dvd, counting they never finished releasing the show I don't mind that the older dvds are out of print now.

Yeah same here.

Yep. The 6 seasons as 4Kids aired them have all been released as of this fall. The first 4 were released as sagas and the last 2 seasons were released before those as season sets. And as far as being re-released, you might as well get them now, because the sagas essentially are re-releases. 4Kids only released these on account of complaints about the volumes, hence why they started with the last 2 season sets before going back and re-releasing the first 4 seasons.

I've never actually seen a copy in real life...

Sort of like what they began to do with TMNT 2K3...except when they almost got to the season-and-a-half that really needed it, they stopped.

I thknk one old 1990's cartoon series that people would like to see reissued on DVD is Sailor Moon. Unfortunately, because the English language rights expired in 2005 no one (not even Cloverway who is Toei's American arm as I understand) has the ability to release the series. Plus I've read that a major factor for the rights not being renewed was that Toei raised the price for the rights and said that no one could licence out the 5th season even for home video-only release.

Invader Zim definitely needs to be released. I can't find it in stores and it is way too expensive online! :(

I have both the Rhino and Sony versions so its not a big deal to me personally, but I find it mind boggling that anybody can't just go to the store and pick up Transformers: The Movie at any given time.

That brings up another thing.....Gremlins 2 is better than Gremlins, but I've never seen Gremlins 2 in a store, whereas I've seen plenty of copies of Gremlins. Go figure.

I think it depends on where you live for alot of DVD's A local Video Store near me carried the Zim DVDs until earlier this year & I bought the Complete Invasion set for only 20 dollars last summer.

But I agree about the Sonic OVA/Move. I had A VHS copy for the longest time but it broke in my last move, Ive looked everywhere for the DVD but can't find it in my state.

The original Tenchi Muyo! and Mobile Suit Gundam both need rereleases. Tenchi is like $150 on eBay and MSG is like $30 a volume.

I just learned that Zoids DVDs are worth a buttload of money. Which makes me angry, seeing as how an old used DVD store I went to had, like, the whole series and they were suddenly "gone" when I found out how much I could make reselling them.

You can buy 'em for between $15 and $20 a volume in many places, which is about how much they were when they first came out.

Ugh, that reminds me of about 4 or 5 years ago, when my local Toys R Us was selling their remaining stock of unopened copies of Perfect Dark for about 50 cents each. I looked online later that day and found they were being sold for at least $20 each in that same condition, so I tried going again the following week...but they had all disappeared (and there were about 70 copies in the bin, so someone likely had the same idea as me).

An easy $1400 opportunity missed...

Yeah, I agree with this one. I spend around 80 for my Tenchi discs (silly, I know). There are so many illegitimate copies out there, and it's a shame fans don't have a reasonably priced genuine option.

I would also like to see Tokyopop (or anybody for that matter) re-release the Vampire Princess Miyu tv series. You'd think with all the vampire cravings lately this would be a good idea...

What I'd like to see re-released on DVD.

Yeah me too. And maybe around the 25th anniversary we'll get it and a Blu-ray release too.

I wish the third season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(2003) would get a proper DVD release similar to the Season 1 and 2 release. (Part 1 and Part 2)
