Some characters are recycled endlessly — it’s just a given that every few years we’ll get another Tarzan movie, another Sherlock Holmes movie, another Robin Hood movie, another Peter Pan movie, etc. In Japan that immortal character is Godzilla, and the giant radioactive lizard is scheduled to make his latest return to the shore very soon. In one week Shin Godzilla opens in the island nation.
Today Funimation announced it has the rights to Shin Godzilla and will be distributing the movie in the West under the title Godzilla Resurgence. This is not a home video release; Funimation intends to put the film out theatrically.
“Funimation is extremely pleased to be working with Toho to bring ‘SHIN GODZILLA’ to audiences across the Americas,” said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and President of Funimation. “SHIN GODZILLA” represents a brand new chapter in the 62-year history of this iconic science fiction monster,” added Mike DuBoise, EVP and COO of Funimation. “We’re excited to bring audiences this new vision of Godzilla from Toho as reimagined by directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi.”
Shin Godzilla, or Godzilla Resurgence, is the 29th Godzilla film to be created by the original studio that birthed him, Toho Company LTD. There’s no word of an exact release date yet, but it will happen within 2016.
