"The Ghost in the Shell (2026)" News and Discussion Thread

Yeah, this looks pretty cool. The only worrisome thing is this being on Amazon Prime, will it get an A.I. dub or subs?
I think the last time Amazon went to any effort for an English dub was...A Star Brighter Than the Sun? That was at least solid.

Ghost in the Shell is one of the biggest franchises they got along with Gundam and Panty and Stocking. I'd imagine they'd get Bang Zoom to dub this. GITS+Science Saru makes this a blockbuster in theory. If this were a Netflix or Crunchyroll show, it would be huge.

"The Ghost in the Shell is one of the most anticipated anime series of summer 2026. The newest big piece of information we’ve gotten is its exact release date of July 7. The previous big pieces of news we’ve gotten is that the series will stream on Amazon Prime and that this series is supposed to be the closest in spirit and style to the original manga. This latest trailer shows that this version will be very different from the 1995 film and Stand Alone Complex"

Forgot about this. The trailer looks... I dont know why, but I love it. Unlike the last GITS shows which were more CGI and because of that I passed on those, am I missing something lore wise btw?, this looks spot on. Reminds me of the manga but maybe even more the PS1 game. This looks like the 95 film Bluray boxarts coming to life. I dunno, I am actually kinda hyped. Might even buy a Blu if it comes. Will this get 4K streaming? But Prime? F that :( Was hoping someone else gets it. I already pay for like 6 other services. From streaming it being Disney+ and SkyShowtime. Does Prime even have decent content outside the US? Only reason I'd pay for it is probably this and Stargate whenever it comes.

Science Saru's animation is always incredible. I know that there's often complaints on how much 2020s anime focuses on flashy action over plot, but Ghost in the Shell's previous adaptations have had the opposite issue of being kinda dry and lacking in action. Seeing an actually action-based version of this story is very excited. Also, the teen boys are probably excited about the fanservice we're getting in this adaptation when Stand Alone Complex had minimal fanservice.

Prime Video Japan posted a trailer.

Interesting to learn Maaya Sakamoto reprises Motoko Kusanagi. She voiced her in Ghost in the Shell: Arise' and 'The New Movie,' and also a yooicedung Motoko in the 1995 movie.

So she's basically fully taken the torch from the late Atsuko Tanaka and kind of "reclaiming" the role to an extent.

It'll be interesting to see how she portrays manga-accurate Motoko versus the more serious versions she had played before.

Here is the English dub cast:
-Suzie Yeung as Motoko Kusanagi
-SungWon Cho as Daisuke Aramaki
-Bill Butts as Batou
-Nick Apostolides as Togusa
-John Bentley as Ishikawa
-Tony Weaver Jr. as Saito
-Xanthe Huynh as Operator
-Lizzie Freeman as Fuchikoma
-Aaron LaPlante as Minister of Internal Affairs
-Jason Marnocha as Volgarena Rep
-Keith Silverstein as Ito
-Cassie Ewulu as Executive of the Union/School-Master
-Chris Tergliafera, Craig Lee Thomas, Emi Lo, Erica Mendez, Frank Todaro, Lucien Dodge, Rebecca Wang, Rich Brown, and Todd Haberkorn

No Mary Elizabeth McGlynn or Richard Epcar? Bummer, but at least this cast looks to be well known LA based VAs rather than outsourced to that cheap studio that Amazon often uses. At least Amazon decided that this show deserves more than a cheapie dub.

Suzie Yeung carrying the torch of The Major from Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Elizabeth Maxwell. Honestly I think she's a great choice for a manga-accurate Motoko.

ProZD continuing to prove he has amazing range and can play nearly any character.

Leon Kennedy as Togusa!?

Lizzie Freeman is going to sound SO cute as Fuchikoma.

Also, thank goodness this an LA dub and not an AI and/or Miami dub!

Anime News Network gave the first two episodes a glowing review and said that the story is indeed a faithful adaptation of the manga as it was advertised. Science Saru's animation was just as great as you would expect. Although the dub voices aren't the Stand Alone Complex cast, the cast did a good job. I still wonder how many people are actually going to watch this considering that being on Amazon Prime is practically a death sentence. We saw what happened with Gundam Gquuuuuux and Panty and Stocking when those shows flopped on Amazon Prime. I hear Nippon Sangoku was great but nobody watched it because it was on Amazon Prime. Can this be Amazon Prime's first real hit?

My hope is that we get a same day dub. Amazon and Netflix seem more prone to do that than Crunchyroll and Hulu.

THIS is honestly the only reason I will buy Prime. Not sure it's the best destination for GITS, but this looks so good that even the worst episode will be great. I'm just surprised they finally managed to nail it. After what 30 years? My only concern is this being just on streaming and just HD. Ideally I'd want also 4K and Bluray.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
