The General "Computer Issues" Thread

Nope.

EDIT: I'm a moron, I have XP, not Vista.

EDIT II: How do I get rid of Widdit? It's irritating the heck out of me!

Do you have the correct disk? Its been a while since I played that game, but Yuri's revenge won't launch with Red Alert 2's disk. I did loaded the incorrect one before myself and got that error message. Unsure about the sound though. never have seen that one myself outside of having muted it in the main menu or something like that.

EDIT: Never mind, I figured it out. I guess I should search Yahoo for solutions to problems first before asking about them here. LOL!

I'm having a major problem with iTunes- it won't let me login to my account! When I try to login a window comes up that says "This Apple ID has not yet been used with the iTunes Store. Please review your account information." and there's a "cancel" button and a "review" button, but when I click "review" it just sends me to the page to set up a new iTunes account and doesn't log me in. I've tried resetting the password and resending the verification email (and verifying it), but it doesn't work.

I used to have a different iTunes account with a different email account until Google deleted my gmail account for "suspicious activity" or something (I have no idea what I did wrong) and had bought a couple albums with that account. I'm still using the same computer I did that with, if any of that affects anything.

EDIT: Oooh looks like was actually completely wrong. I didn't bother to click past Agree to Terms page. It's actually letting me put in the credit card information, so it looks like it IS working correctly. Oops.

iTunes questions I recently picked up Naxos Audiobooks fantastic Complete Sherlock Holmes CD set. It was significantly expensive, as CD audiobooks are apparently all bit dead, as evidenced by my inability to find a number of others I want. But it was worth it, and I've finall uploaded all 60 discs into iTunes. As I always do when uploading audiobooks into iTunes, I've set up a playlist to keep things in order (I can't imagine I'm the first person who ever stumbled across this idea, but it's worked fine for me with most books). Unfortunately, probably to sell the individual packages, the stories themselves are not in order (Incidentally, whoever load them into the database is schizo; some discs which should theoretically be from the same set have different names and sometimes even different names for the discs themselves, sometimes the name of the story is in the track name, sometimes not, it's generally insane.). As the chronology between the original stories is notoriously poor, this shouldn't be hugely important, and if you're a normal, well-adjust person who gets laid once in a while, you probably won't mind, but it bugged me. I've arranged them in the playlists in the proper order (which took way more effort than it should have), but to broaden the topic in general, is there a different way to go about importing audiobooks? I have a couple of others where each chapter is a individual track, leaving me with 60 minute tracks, and if I were to lose my place I wouldn't be able to click off like I could with a regular audiobook and then click on and pick up. Is there any way to convert the tracks while keeping them organized? I remember reading once upon a time that when importing a CD, you could "join" the tracks, then change the media type. I can't find the "join" option on th accursed new version of iTunes, and in any case, it wouldn't work for the Holmes stuff unless I could go to the actual imported groups of tracks rather than the discs themselves and join each story individually. On tangential note, in my futile quest to find some of the old audiobooks I'm looking for on CD, I've found that Amazon apparently does carry digital downloads (presumably through Audible, evidently the new biggest name in audiobooks), and some for pretty darn low prices, but Amazon's iphoke app and mobile site won't let me buy them, leading me to believe that these are in a format iTunes doesn't support and that the prices are indeed too good to be true.

EDIT: Apparently, there are similar prices in iTunes. I can hunt online for the CDs, or spend less than a dollar for each of them on iTunes. For any semi-intelligent person, that should be a no-brainer, why am I still considering getting the CDs?

I have a toolbar turned on for all of my most frequented bookmarks. Occasionally, something happens and one of the little icons gets replaced with another bookmark's icon. (For example, right now my bookmark for The Digital Bits has the icon for YouTube!) Just deleting the bookmark and re-adding it doesn't fix the problem. Eventually, the glitches seem to fix themselves and the appropriate icons will ultimately reappear. It's not a big issue, obviously, but I was just curious if there's a way that I can fix the problem myself when it happens or if it's just something I have to wait to change on its own (like a cache thing).

You can manually clear your cache and see if that does anything. I've never had this specific problem, but every so often icons go blank or update long after the site did.

For some reason the default search engine for Chrome switched from Google to Ask, how do I switch it back?

Generally, my father uses Chrome more often than I do, so it's entirely possible he clicked on something or other.

Odd question. If the filesystems for Windows and Mac (NTFS and HFS+) are not compatible, how come I'm able to copy files back and forth between my PC and my Macbook?

If you're transferring files using a home network, OS X has built-in tools that let it connect to Windows file shares, regardless of the file system on the shared disk.

If you're using a USB flash drive, it's most likely formatted in FAT16 or FAT32, which both Windows and OS X can read & write to.

Sometimes I use Internet Explorer on my parents' computer (it's IE 9), since they are signed into things through Firefox and I don't want to sign them out. Whenever I go to Yahoo and click on a search result, it opens the link in a new tab. Is there any way to change this so that clicking the link will just take me there in the same window? (This is how I remember IE working for years.) I've looked at the tab settings under Internet Options and have checked and unchecked various boxes, but nothing seems to work. I just find it annoying and was curious if it could be changed, or if it's just something standard with IE nowadays.

That's not an IE thing, it's a Yahoo thing. Look for the search settings and disable open in new tab.

Um, I can't find my recycle bin. The shortcut is gone, and when I click up the start menu, it doesn't show up when I search. Where could it be?

Right click on a blank area of the desktop. You will see the option for "personalize", and mouse over and select this. On the left hand pane under the personalization menu you will see "Change desktop icons". Click on this. From here a tab will come up showing a check-box for major desktop icons. One of those icons is Recycle bin. Go ahead and check the checkbox. Click ok and the recycle bin will re-appear on the desktop.

Thanks, though now and the icon displays the full recycle bin when it's actually empty, and vice versa.

OK, more pressing issue: just bought a CD. Loaded it into iTunes. It's in the music file on the computer. When I search for it in the iTunes search bar, it comes up. But it won't display. I can't play it. Having paid money for the CD, this is kind of irritating.

Just switch the icons for the recycle bin. It should be in the same menu.

Did you rip the cd in itunes? Find the folder and pick "add to library", see if that does anything.

I'm not sure whether this is a computer issue or more of a Facebook issue, but on Facebook, I can't upload any photos. When the pop-up comes where you go to select, the window's header reads "select file(s) to upload by static.ak.fbcdn.net" -- I don't understand any of that. Only a few other noticeable things were when I went to load UNO through FB, the countdown text to the ad was a little distorted, and when the box score on MLB.com's gameday, certain areas of text are also distorted. Not just my laptop, but also a computer here as well

Edit: Also getting one from another FB page --- fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net

Here's a (3MB) BMP picture: http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/6231/weirdxd.png
The bottom left was an attempt on IE, the right on GChrome, which I always use

Okay, I looked on mine and that's the same dialog I get when uploading photos. Just pick the one you want and hit upload.

The other thing light be a clear type issue. Go to Start, control panel, display and pick "adjust clear type" on the left. Check the box that says turn on.
