The General "Computer Issues" Thread

I've never heard of XP Anti-Virus. Where did you get it? (Edit: Do you mean Windows Defender?)

Try downloading Lavasoft or McAfee Free from a different computer (onto a flash stick) and put them on the XP. Lavasoft should be able to get rid of the problem one for you.

If you have some pretty bad nasties, you might have to fix them in safe mode. Hit the F8 button when you turn your PC on.

Spidey, try changing the spell check language to another version of English (UK, American, etc). If it starts picking up words again, change it back to Canadian English and see if it's fixed.

I'm not sure about NeoOffice, but I know Pages uses the built-in spellchecker. In both programs, do the following

Open the application that you want to use and choose Edit > Spelling and Grammar > “Check Spelling as You Type.”

To also check grammar with spelling, choose Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Grammar With Spelling.

If this doesn't work in the application, make sure the language is correct. To do this, do the following:

Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar

In the drop-down box at the option, make sure either "Automatic by Language" or [strike]"US English"[/strike] "Canadian English" is selected.

Take a look at Apple's official support documentation for troubleshooting the issue.

I've gotten it working now. Thanks you two!:anime:

Fixed! Turns out that having Toonzone forums on the main page was the cause of these so called "errors", causing it to prevent me going to the internet.

So, basically, I removed it as a homepage, restarted it, and that's it.

Okay, good news and bad news.

The good news is that I got iTunes store to work, all I had to do was update to the latest version of iTunes.

But now there's another problem. I can't get the shows I just bought to sink onto my iPod. I made sure they were checked and everything. But after it syncs, I go to Videos on my iPod and it says there are no videos.

What kind of iPod? My niece has an older Touch and some of the videos she bought are incompatible with that model for some weird reason.

It's a 4GB I got about a year ago I think (I don't know exactly what type). I hope I don't have to get a whole nother iPod.

WHAT is YouTube doing? Why can I only see some of my playlists and the setup is wonky, what gives? I can get one of my playist one the mobile YouTube on my phone, but not on the computer? WTH? Anyway, topic at hand, 3 key doesn't work on my calculator pad.

Yuri's Revenge needs Red Alert 2 to be updated first. Make sure Red Alert 2 is patched, then install the patch for Yuri's Revenge.
If that doesn't help, make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed and the latest drivers for your sound card.
You can also try running the game as an administrator or running it in Compatibility Mode for an older version of Windows.
How I update all of this? Even running as admin, quite apart from removing all of my saved games, does not solve the issue. I don't know how the sound just disappeared one day. It's very odd.
OK, I'm not sure where to put this, but it's driving me nuts. Synching my iPhone has become a serious problem. It will briefly sync up, then stop. there's still a current running through it, as it's charging, but it usually won't sync. Sometime I can fix the problem by rebooting the computer, but not always. Sometimes, it hooks itself up and then seems to eject for no reason. It's driving me crazy.
Still no luck.

Okay, something strange is going on. I've had it happen on Wikipedia, Youtube, and now Yahoo. When I'm typing in the search box, this little drop-down (which is not the usual you'd expect, as on Wiki I can still see the drop-down with possible search results underneath it) appears:

box01k.jpg

When I click on the little gear icon in the lower-right corner, the following box appears:

box02.jpg

As you can see, I've checked everything to off, even the one option that specifically mentions yahoo.com (I did the same when I saw it on Wikipedia), yet it continues to appear.

I've never seen this before, and it seemed to start just a couple hours ago. Anybody know what this is?

Edit: A little looking around turned up that it was the result of an Add-on when I installed Download Accelerator this afternoon. So now a new question: I can't seem to Unistall the Add-on. I can disable it, but the "Uninstall" button next to it is not clickable. Is there another way to uninstall Add-ons?

Maybe it's a mandatory part of Download Accelerator. I use Down Them All, it might be a similar program you can check out.

I think I know one way to get rid of it, but you'd have to uninstall Firefox, delete the entire folder in programs, and reinstall to do it.

I suppose it's no big deal to just leave them there. At least they're disabled, which has stopped the annoying pop-up, so that should be fine. :)

Download Accelerator doesn't seem to be an actual extension, but a program that creates an add-on for Firefox, much like Flash or something. That means you remove it by uninstalling the actual program from Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

This of course is all dependent on the assumption that the "Download Accelerator" that you're using is Download Accelerator Plus from http://www.speedbit.com/dap/

So maybe someone Here can help me. Im having problems with my Dell lately. Its become a common issue for my computer to just freeze up when im online. Ill be surfing the net, and then suddenly, the entire computer freezes up. I usually have to shut down and restart the computer quite a few times before this issue resolves itself. does anyone know what the problem might be?

First of all, how old is the computer?

There's always the chance that you've got some spyware, but if it's an older computer there might be other answers.

the computer is around 5 years old. If this is a spyware issue, how would I get rid of it?

Since it's old, there's the chance that it uses a lot of processor power to display an internet page. Usually it doesn't mean much, but if you have spyware or other things running in the background, it can cause freezing.

I recommend downloading Ad-Aware free and scanning the whole computer. It will then recommend actions if it finds anything. I've used it for years and it's always gotten rid of the nasties. It helped when I had a serious attack a few years ago.

OK, this is driving me bonkers: apparently, whatever version of Flash I installed when I updated Firefox last is different from the one I have on IE, because on YouTube, in IE I can see the red bar so I know how much of the video has loaded, but Firefox doesn't show it and make me frigging guess. It's driving my crazy. Still no luck with CnC YR either :p

THat shuld have nothing to do with the red bar. Try flushing out your cookies from Youtube in Firefox and re-loading the page. Follow the guide at https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Deleting cookies#w_delete-cookies-for-a-single-site for how to delete cookies from only one site.

If you really really want to clean it out but good though, download Flash Player Uninstaller which is Adobe's painless way of flushing out any version of Flash on your PC. Then you can download the current version of Flash for IE and Non-IE browsers (it's a different version number for each currently per http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/)

Flash for IE - http://filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_ie/
Flash for Non-IE - http://filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_firefox/

I use FileHippo.com for the downloads of this because Adobe's way of getting Flash is rather crappy and makes you open up both browsers to do it.

Re-install both versions of Flash and you should be set.

Firefox is doing that to me, too. Not on all videos. I just thought it was Youtube being screwy.

Not sure if this counts, but i have a problem with blip.tv videos. Whenever i click on one using firefox or internet explorer i just get a blank white space where the video should be (however, on AOL i have no problem seeing the videos). I tried updating adobe flash but that didnt do anything.
EDIT: Apparently a similar thing is happening with gametrailers. I dont know if it applies to all video sites though as youtube still works fine.

Do you have an ad blocker turned on when you visit the sites with videos? I'm not sure what would cause this problem unless it was outdated flash or a blocker interrupting the player.

Everyone applause these two characters, for soon getting their own spin-off full animated series!!! (who would have expected a series with PB and Marceline anyway? I know they have an upcoming comic book series which will go well with)

Watched Toy Story 5 today. It felt like another awesome escapade for the characters, while also they taught an important lesson: it's ok to be different, especially if you still like to play with toys. Lily turned from an antagonist to a hero of the movie, because of realising exactly that.
