R.I.P. Ian Holm (1931-2020)

This is late, but worthwhile.

Sir Ian Holm has died at the age of 88 on 19 June. Among his roles on screen were Sam Mussabini in Chariots of Fire, Ash in Alien and Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie series. He also provided the voice of Chef Skinner in Ratatouille, which won him an Annie Award- just one of many awards he got throughout his career.

Holm was also a theatrical performer on Shakespeare plays, perhaps most notably King Lear in the late 1990s. He portrayed Frodo Baggins in a 1981 BBC Radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. There were three occasions where he portrayed Napoleon Bonaparte: Napoleon and Love, Time Bandits and The Emperor's New Clothes (2001).

Coincidentally, this comes months after the death of Orson Bean, who has also portrayed both Bilbo and Frodo (i.e. for Rankin/Bass).

There was that moment years ago when I realized that Bilbo Baggins was the evil robot in Alien, and I was like "This guy's probably done tons of roles I never realized before now".

EDIT: We were really luck to have him and Christopher Lee return for the Hobbit movies, before they passed away.

I really loved him as Frodo in the BBC Lord of the Rings radio drama. He was just perfectly cast in the role.

RIP Ian Holm. You will be sorely missed.
