Mildew Wolf

Are there any fans of Hanna-Barbera cartoon character Mildew Wolf, who first appeared in 1969 in a segment of the Cattanooga Cats called "It's the Wolf" and later became a commentator on "Laff-a-Lympics"?

I had no idea Mildew existed before Laff-a-Lympics (Cattanoga Cats).But you could argue that he definately stole the show in Laff-a-Lympics which is pretty amazing considering both Yogi and Scooby's presence.

What that means, Zen, is that Cattanooga Cats was before your time. I think. Mildew was the titular villain of "It's The Wolf!" (voiced by an uncredited Paul Lynde). 8 years later, a reformed Mildew (now voiced by John Stephenson) is calling the action on "Laff-a-Lympics". The "Savages!" line was also used by Lynde, as Claude Pertwee, in the opening of "Where's Huddles?" (1970). I wouldn't say Mildew was a cult favorite, but more of a curious choice as an announcer.

The reason why Mildew Wolf was voiced by John Stephenson in Laff-A-Lympics rather than Paul Lynde was because Mr. Lynde apparently had a reputation in Hollywood for being difficult to work with, and I guess H-B had first hand knowledge of this when they worked with Lynde in the movie Charlotte's Web (in which Lynde voice Templeton the rat). So for Laff, H-B instead went with a Paul Lynde soundalike to voice Mildew.

So for Laff, H-B instead went with a Paul Lynde soundalike to voice Mildew.

And Paul Lynde in the 1970's mostly concentrated being the center square on Peter Marshall Hollywood Squares.

Gad, I remember this series way back when I was a nipper. I had a feeling there was something so strange about Mildrew that made me want to like him, curious like - his voice, his design, his sarcastic personality. And after revisiting these shorts today, I've grown to like him even more.

Who else would come out with great comeback remarks like: "HUMOURLESS HOUND!"

Considering most of the non-team members in the show would have a logical team assignment if they were players: Snagglepuss would be in the Yogi's. Jabberjaw would be in the Scoobies. So guess which team would the big bad "WOOL-UF" have been in? Perhaps the same one he had called "savages"?
(He evidently forgot his past, but if this were done today, someone in the show would have probably mentioned that. Back then, they basically ignored the other canons).

I took me about ten seconds before I remember what one you're talking about (the Ruby-Spears "serialized" thinbg aboiut the ouppy trying to find his master, and al of his dogs as his companions..)...the dog kinda sounded more like Joe Besser (you issy ..not so fast..that's just a Besserism..but there's a similairity Besser/Lynde there..) Incidentlaly, the similairly "Sissy" Fibber Fox is based on Shelley Berman (popular 1960s comedy act and now also known for "Curb Your Enthusiasm", AND for appearing in cameo rtoles and such in some movies, and likewise the Jay Ward Fractured Fairy Tale, Ugly Ducking, in the plastic surgery episode, (one of aeveral using the Capitol stock music,btw) (the Ugly Duckling and FIbber Fox were voiced by Daws Butler, but of coruse never met..the fox was from Hanna-Barbeera's Yakky Doodle, who had a different voice history all his own. And a different voice and story to tell about it. )

What about Mr. Wolf in the Kwicky Koala cartoons? It was voiced by John Stephenson in a Paul Lynde/Mildew Wolf style voice!

He sure was!! "THAT Koala"...(Unlike some other older fans, that, maybe since Tex Avery created it, was in many ways rather a good shiow..)

Storyman Bob Ogle did the Bill Thompson/Droopy/Disney's White Rabbit/H-B's Touche Turtle voice for the koala, who had he roadrunner's speed - nope, take that back--cranked up his own speed so as to be magically disappearing. POOF! POOF!)

When i saw this, I almsot thought that it WAS Paul Lynde.

Oh, and for the record, the wolf from "Kwicky Koala" is named Wilford Wolf. Just thought you should know.
