Ok I have to say that other than Kenshin, Kikaider is my fav. anime, but the cartoon like look did put me off at first, but I guess you just have to look around that.I wanna know who eles frowned upon it for its cartoonish looks at first.

Kikaider's style was a bit off-putting at first, but since it obviously was retro styled rather than retro in fact, I decided to stay with it and within a couple of episodes could see how the styling of the characters actually fit their personalities really well. I'm glad I stayed with it all the way through because it turned out to be one of the better animes I've seen. Its central theme of the conflict between duty and conscience really came to the forefront during the episodes with the batbot and carried on through the rest of the series. That theme also appeared in the OVA that followed, but not to the same depth as in the series. The OVA was done more nicely but didn't have the same emotional grip for me that the series did. I'd have liked to see more on the female-gender robots introduced in the OVA, especially as the female 'bots seemed to be developing something like a conscience on their own.
By the way, this is my first post in ToonZone, although I've been lurking around the threads for several weeks while awaiting authorization to post. (^_*)

I guess I'm one of the few people who liked the animation from the get go. It always looked very stylizied and very clean, but I guess it's only for some.

When I first watched it all the pans and recycling bothered me a lot, but I got used to it pretty fast. The retro character designs didn't bother me though. Just those pans.

I also liked the animation from the get go. It was once again something new to the AS plate. Compared to Inu Yasha and dare I say it Cowboy Bebop, I'd say anime wise Kikaider is the smoothest animation I have seen in quite a while.

The character designs didn't bother me too much, with the exception Hanpei Hattori. I guess the chin was too cartoonish for a semi-serious character for my tastes (002's nose from Cyborg 009 gives me the same reaction). Mitsuko's design was pretty good though, and Jiro's as well. Especially his pants. Oh, and the weird computer-generated rain and pans were hard to get used to.

And Herbkir- you're from the Rumic World messageboard, right? I'm goat there as well, though I don't post much. I don't really post much here, either...

Kikaider is a decent show but it really doesnt strike me as anything great. I usually love retro-style shows but Kikaider really doesnt do it for me. The freak-show character designs are really offputting and the 10 dollar budget doesnt help either.

Hi, goat

Yes, I post over at Rumic World and a few other places that I like. I'm always Herbkir and use my little typed sig. I've seen your posts at Rumic. I was lurking around this board for a while, awaiting activation of my account. Nice to see you again. (^_*)

I loved the animation of Metropolis, so I got used to the actual look of Kikaider right off the bat...

...however the constant pans and cheap "Zoids" feel of it put me off at first.

As someone who's Portuguese, it just bugs me again that we lost. I wanted Portugal to win this time because this is Ronaldo's last, but no, we think Ronaldo has devolved significantly, and we lost against Spain.

Conflicted about the upcoming film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone, given the creator now distancing herself from it despite co-writing the screenplay and blocking one of the actresses on social media despite defending her casting in the film.
