So I'm very new to the series(and only heard random great things about it from the past years). And I was simply curious, but how popular is the series in Japan/and or in other outside areas?

I'm generally asking this because I'm amazed I didn't notice this series at all for the past years(I'm already loving it to my surprise as well :) ).

Thanks!

If it weren't popular, WSJ would've cancelled it. For this series a new term was coined: Togashism - taking long paid breaks and allowed I work when you wanted.

The reason it tends to fly under the radar is it's publishing history. For the past several years, it's been on an almost perceptual break. Every once in a while, the author would come back and write 10 chapters, then put it on another year-long break. As someone else has said, it gets amazing sale on the rare occasion that it's actually running.

It's been about 13 chapters since the last break, so it might actually keep going this time.

The only WSJ manga properties that sell more than Hunter x Hunter volumes in Japan are One Piece and Naruto (just barely under this one). The anime is also getting the best ratings out of all of the new fall series this year. It's popular in several other countries, but I'm pretty sure it performed pretty terribly in the US.

As other have said, based on its sales ratings it is pretty popular and well-known in Japan, though not really on the level of something like One Piece or Dragon Ball. That said, part of the reason for that may be because of the irregular intervals in which the manga is published. As has been pointed out, Togashi constantly puts the series on hiatus and only churns out an average of 10-20 chapters a year (sometimes not even publishing any chapters for an entire year), so obviously when its not being published readers will lose interest in it for that period of time and forget about it. Of course when it does come back its a prett big deal and I'm sure that contributes a lot to its sales, but overall the series is still one of the most popular WSJ titles in Japan.

I believe that the new anime has been getting good ratings too, which should no doubt contribute to increasing its popularity.

Thanks for the responses guys! :)

As for all hiatus it gets....geez, but I'm glad the new anime is doing well though!
