A new Ghostbusters animated series is in the works.

It will be set in the year 2050 and the series will follow an entirely new generation of Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters director/producer Ivan Reitman is overseeing the project. Ecto Force is set to premiere sometime in early 2018.

Should be fun. Especially the globe trotting bit.

Yeah, it sounds like a mix of Aykroyd's original script for the first movie which had different teams, jumping dimensions, futuristic, etc. and what they're doing in the Ghostbusters International comic - going to other countries and busting ghosts.

Thanks for that info. I was thinking it would be a follow up to the movie that's coming next year. Maybe they'll have the original GB animated cast make an appearance like they did in Extreme. (Presumably voiced by LaMarche, Coulier, Welker and maybe Arsenio could return as Winston since Buster Jones is gone. Just a thought.)

I'd hate to bring up the 2016 film reboot that everyone's talking about, but I have a feeling this has the potential to be a better watch for original Ghostbusters fans than that. This mainly because it's seemingly not trying to overwrite or replace the original, but intent on building upon the concept and taking it places it's never been. I'm sort of relieved that there's no mention of that movie in the synopsis, and I'm glad the original director is involved, even if he's just being the "yes/no" guy to the creators.

You're welcome. That would be pretty cool, even if it's just a video recording of them that the main cast finds in the archives or something.

Yeah, in a way, it's good the Ghost Corps studio within Sony was founded. Now Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd can oversee anything Ghostbusters-releated and there's that extra layer of oversight.

Maybe they could get J.Michael Straczynski back as a writer for this one like he did for The Real Ghostbusters' first few seasons.

JMS is busy live action properties these days. He did confirm he's not involved with Ecto-Force.

But I suppose depending on what stage of production it's in...you never know.

Neat we're finally getting a new Ghostbusters cartoon after so many years. I do wonder if this is gonna be a continuation or reboot.

Ivan Reitman, during Comic Con, revealed they put Ecto Force on hold at the last second in order to fully focus on the animated movie. 15:23 mark:
Yeah, we put it on hold. We got a lot of inquiries and interest from different, uh, television networks to put it on and then at the last second, we decided to hold on the deal and really focus on the new Ghostbusters animated feature and sort of have that kick off the world and I think it's because I knew the animated feature was going to bring--going to at least go a long way to bring back the classical story we originally started and, uh, I wanted that to come first

FYI about the movie if you haven't heard about it:
  • First reported back on October 1, 2015 to be in the works. Ivan Reitman and Tom Pollock would allegedly produce it through their Montecito Picture Company, with Ali Bell and Kristine Belson overseeing for Sony Pictures Animation.
  • On March 8, 2016, it was reported Fletcher Moules will direct.
  • On April 28, 2016, it was reported in the EMPIRE June 2016 issue, Ivan Reitman would co-direct.
  • On July 14, 2016, Ivan Reitman confirmed the movie is in the middle of being written.
  • On July 15, 2016, it was reported the animated movie will be from the perspective of a ghost.
  • On March 21, 2017, Ivan Reitman projected the movie's release around 2019 or 2020. It depends on how fast they can get it together.
  • On July 20, 2017, during the Ghostbusters 101 panel at San Diego Comic Con, Reitman revealed the animated movie would explore the ghost world through a ghost's perspective, the animated movie is "deep in design", it is "dealing with Ghost World quite a lot", and is the "Ghostbusters from a ghost's point of view". Reportedly, the ghost would join the team of Ghostbusters.
  • On July 23, 2017, during the Empire Podcast, Ivan Reitman mentioned the animated movie which will 'kick off the world' and 'at least go a long way to bring back the classical story' of the movies.

I figured the show was getting canned. Sony Pictures had to partner up with Nelvana and DHX for the Hotel Transylvania and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs series. For an early 2018 series, they were awfully quiet about who they'd work with.

Just a minute, Takao. He said, it was "on hold". That doesn't mean it was cancelled outright (which is what "canned" implies).

2019 is the 35th anniversary of the franchise so they might be aiming to release the animated movie in June 2019 then keep public interest by then releasing Ecto-Force maybe as early as fall 2019 while they work on the next live action movie.

Watched Toy Story 5 today. It felt like another awesome escapade for the characters, while also they taught an important lesson: it's ok to be different, especially if you still like to play with toys. Lily turned from an antagonist to a hero of the movie, because of realising exactly that.
