"DuckTales" (2017) Series Talkback (Spoilers)

Astro Boyd

Man, I am so late for the party. I blame work! Anyway, here's my review. This is the most the sweetest special episode I have ever saw. This episode about Huey making friends with the adorable robot, Boyd, but when he has the malfunction and show to Gyro, he freakout and accused Boyd as a weapon, not a real boy. I feel like a Pinocchio vibe of it. So Gyro, Fenton AKA Gizmoduck, Huey and Boyd flew to Japan to fix him. But, Gyro is trying to shut him down and still doesn't understand Boyd at all. Then the villain named Akita used Boyd as his weapon to destroy Japan. Talk about terrorism! I have an evil grin on my face seeing Doofus Drake still get grounded for life. Hee Hee! I see they made Gyro the original look of him and used to be nice, until whatever happens back then, probably makes him an arrogant jerk. In the end, Gyro finally knows the truth of BOYD and realize he's not a weapon, but a real boy. The feels! The feels! And now, Gyro is now giving Fenton more respect and hires him as his professor assistant. Gee, I wonder season 3 might be the last season of Ducktales? Anyway, I enjoy this episode. It's sweet, powerful, and has a good message about acceptance like some people trying to accept me for being autistic.

The Rumble For Ragnarok!

This does feel like a direct sequel to "The Secret Links of Moorshire", with a Scrooge Dewey centric plot, Louie trying to make money out of it, Webby has an encounter with magical animals, and the Huey and Launchpad announce team.

Of course compared to that, this episode is inferior. I mean that episode had Glomgold, so automatically lose some points there.
Also I don't get the audience, where they earthlings cheering for the destruction of earth, or from another world and the end they cheer against themselves when they turn to Dewey's side?

This is probably the weakest of season 3, but that is more of a compliment to the other episodes. I loved Mrs. Beakley viking outfit, a callback to the 87 series, and Webby's wrestling outfit is just adorable.

I do think it made no sense to skip a generation, Donald we know is a capable fighter, and if you seen some old Donald Duck cartoons he can play a heel too, Della survived 10 years on the moon, and if not one of them, Gladstone is the perfect candidate for this job, with his love he will never lose, and he has a natural heel personality.

Well so that ends the first batch of season 3, I hope the hiatus is not that long.

That's what I thought about too. :D

This is probably the weakest of season 7
Um, you mean season 3.

So as a prowrestling fan, I found this episode appropriately “awesome”. It’s easy to be a babyface, but being a heel and embracing that is harder. Hundreds of thousands of people booing you, chanting “you suck” or other, worse, chants can take a lot out of you. It makes sense that Scoorge would embrace that, but I can see why Dewey would hate that. Seeing him try to work that good guy gimmick was painful. I liked Scoorge’s gimmick as this greedy moneygrubber, the sack of money was such a funny prop.

Huey having a hard time commentating hurt him more than I expected. It didn’t really feel like a B-plot, more like a gag, but hey, the guy was in the episode and had something to do, which is good. Louie delivering the moral sorta made sense, he started the episode dipping out to sell oddly well-timed t-shirts; he rolled with it while Huey and Dewey were trying to figure out what to do to be liked.

Webby was adorable in this one, I’m glad SOMEONE understood being a heel, but the angel couldn’t cut a promo if her life depended on it. Good thing Mrs. Beakley came in, that clean your clock line was great.

In the end, Dewey saves the day because however you spell his name put him over. I like how Scoorge kept up the act by swiping the belt, very appropriate of his angle.

Also, can I just say that I’m glad that cartoons period don’t go all meta with the prowrestling with the “wrestling is fake” stuff. Yeah, it’s fake, but so are action movies, now shut up and enjoy the pyro.

And that sums up my thoughts with this episode. Yeah, it’s annoying to see the triplets go through the same lessons of inadequacy only for them to forget the next episode, but in terms of entertainment, I had a good time with this one, which is what prowrestling is all about!

The Rumble For Ragnarok!
This episode is hilarious! I mean, I'm no fan of wrestling, but this funny. Scrooge to the kids to the land of Valhalla to the wrestlers to defeat Jörmungandr, much to Launchpad's delight. Silly Launchpad. I laughed so laughed so hard that Scrooge become a wrestler. Holy mackerel! Scrooge wasn't sure that Dewey is ready for the wrestling, so he ask Webby to do it. Wow! Call it drama! And the people are so mean! Yikes! Huey is having a hard time being announcer on wrestling, but Launchpad did it better than him. I think Dewey is over Dewey it (See what I did there?) for trying to win over the crowd and keeps messing it up. I feel sorry for Dewey, for being mean by audiences. Geez! Thank God I was loved when I did a musical every year, except this year, due of the you know what.:crying: Anyway, Louie gives Dewey and Huey a pep talk that they need to just roll with it. You know, even though Louie can be an evil triplet, but he has heart. I was surprise that Mrs. Beakly made a surprise appearance in the wrestling match that I didn't expect. Even Launchpad made a twist to become wrestler. But they didn't win. But Dewey came in and when Jörmungandr made a bad statement on everything like the end of the world thing, the audience turned on him and cheered for Dewey instead. Dewey defeated Jörmungandr and made Scrooge McDuck proud, but he took the wrestling belt away from Dewey so Scrooge and Dewey can finish the fight which is the end of the episode. I enjoyed this episode. It's hilarious and it has heart. It's a little bit mean spirited, but it's still sweet. Sadly, after this episode, it'll be on hiatus. BOO!

The Rumble For Ragnarok!
I didn't like this episode. Like Dewey's character-lines, Jörmungandr's heel-turn and the audience turning against him so quickly felt forced, and it felt like it was done just so Dewey can get the praise he wants. And once again, Dewey only thought of himself first and saving the Earth was just an afterthought. Dewey is practically already a heel as far as I'm concern.

Jörmungandr is the name of Midgard's Serpent, and it has appeared sometimes in Marvel's comics about Thor. But I didn't expect the character in this episode would be the actual Midgard's Serpent, who will cause the Ragnarok and devour all Midgard.

I still haven't see the episode, so can anyboty tell me if a Ducktales' version of Thor or Loki appeared in this episode? By a clip I saw about Dewey defeating the Serpent, I thought he could be worthy of Mjolnir. He only needed to say "For Midgard!".

Okay negatives of this episode: They reallllllllllllllllly handwaved an excuse as to why Scrooge didn't take Della and Donald to this. And I admit "those two couldn't get along to save the world" is a funny line and at least it was addressed but it's still honestly a pretty pathetic reason as to exclude either of those two from this episode. Especially since thinking about it why not either have Donald or Della if you didn't want one of them? And really since Donald doesn't like adventures it should of been Della as they could of brought her along without Donald (there can't be a rule now that Della's in the cast that every episode she's in has to involve Donald or vice versa right cause that wouldn't make any sense) and had her take on Jorgumandar if Scrooge shouldn't handle it. I get passing on legacy and feel that is a well handled theme (will talk about that more when I get to the positives of this episode) but this feels like a legacy and mark that maybe you should start around say when the kids are 20 or 30 if it's every 10 years not NOW especially if it is full contact wresting. I mean it's not like they snuck in or anything this time around Scrooge invited them and said they would replace him if he took a fall so... why do that to them at that age? Like I know why the writers wanted it because again the show is supposed to focus on them but they needed a better reason within the narrative. Also it feels like a cop out in a way if the lesson at the end is supposed to be "it doesn't matter if the crowd is on your side" if you do have the crowd on Dewey's side taking out Jorgumandar. Yeah I get it at least showed why that was the case but honestly it would of been stronger and made more sense with what was shown before showing Dewey use deceit and trickery and still have the crowd dislike him after beating Jorgumandar. Also the ending was obviously a riff on Rocky III with Scrooge and Dewey charging at one another but even if you get that reference still feels like a weak way to end the episode. Plus for an episode about wrestling why end it to a homage of one of the most well known BOXING movies ever known? Two are pretty different and yeah there was wrestling in Rocky III but that's not the reference they were going for so feels odd.

I admit though those are my biggest greviances as I was honestly really digging this one. First off this was a lot better in terms of the overall comedy and wit when we had in the previous episodes as there felt more time dedicated to making and telling jokes and actually doing them really well. Such as Webby's enthuasim over the event, Louie seeing a merchandise opportunity and instantly sneaking off to do that and hitting people with a T shirt canon, Huey's failure as an announcer and his awful stupid puns especially trying to use popcorn puns when Dewey's whole gimmick was using Lollypops, "how did you know that would happen?" "Eh I call them like I see them", The penny pincher hold, Scrooge telling Webby to do all the fighting and not let Dewey get involved at all, Dewey giving the dog candy not knowing that owuld be bad for him, "how did you know my gimmick and how it would go over?" "I've known you all of my life man I know how these things were going to play out", Webby and Beakley tag teaming Jorgumandar and then later Launchpad announcing himself as a wrestler, and Dewey only being inspired using his pun which even he admits are forced. So yeah a lot of good laughs in this one I found a lot more amusing then in the last couple of episodes where the jokes were actually flowing and actually hit so yeah that makes it work more for me.

Also if we're going to have to be shoved with an obivous on the nose moral I want it to be something I can actually care about and get into. A lot of problems with these morals and arcs is I don't really care much about their resolutions and feel their just weak character of the day stuff just there to get a moral. I can't get into Louie not taking Dewey's attempts at helping out his scheme without it being felt like a forced "he needs to listen more" moral and I can't get into Huey feeling ostrachized and bonding with Boyd some and having to tell everyone "hey he's just a kid not a murder machine" as it just feels there and not something that really connects to the characters or there core in the story. However this really did though because yeah this is actually about legacy. Dewey isn't just upset about being seen as a bad guy to these fans but also about his place in this family now that it's about directly inheriting and stepping up to that legacy. Before it was about wanting to accept it or have a speciica goal or quest that needed to be accomplish like say finding Della but here it's "Dewey sees someone he idolizes being torn apart and gets upset about it and now being put in that position isn't sure he can stomach it and go forward" which actually does work. That's always been a part of this take on Dewey; that ego and that desire to be seen as something great and impressive especially when pushed into the lime light and that getting tested and having to swallow down the lesson that sometimes even for the greater good some people aren't going to like you actually does feel organic here. Same even with Huey being embarrassed and having to learn being more Launchpad when doing the narration; not only for the jokes but it actually does seem to get to him and him having to learn to get over that and I also like how this is a lesson that Louie points out to the two to get them over their funk since sometimes even if he's the biggest jerk and sell out they remember "yeah he can see the angles here and use that to his advantage in helping out his family without it even being said" and that was a good useage here. Also helps that this is much more an action episode where all the action was on point. Like some moves looked fake and the pain wasn't that much but that's also due to the nature of wrestling and even taking that into consideration some bits like Webby taking on that woman with the wolf and the battle at the end were well stage so have to give props there.

So probably not the strongest of this little run but certailnly one of them and easily so much better then the last two episodes. Hopefully it won't be too long before the rest of the season comes out and hopefully we have more episodes like this to showcase it's quality and give us more lessons and character stakes we can invest into besides them just telling us to do that even if they don't show us why we should care.

DuckTales "The Rumble For Ragnorak!"

Let's cut to the chase. That was not good.

Perhaps you saw me objecting to this coming. I detest episodes where the Ducks fight after all and am not shy in saying so.

Except this is sort of like one of those Disney boxing / wrestling cartoons / comics Carl Barks sometimes did. It's not an actual apocalyptic battle.

My problem is it's too cartoony. There is no reality to it. Dewey's quick-change outfit belongs in a zany Warner Bros cartoon, not the Disney Ducks. And Dewey asks Louie how he made all those T-shirts. And the truth is, he shouldn't have been able to. The show was being a dumb cartoon and thought if they poked around the meta of it a bit I'd forgive it. I don't. I think its stupid and completely wrong for this franchise.

I expected much worse, but I DID wind up hating it after all. Just not for the reasons I assumed I would. *.

Francisco Angones said how there was always intended to be a break after the most recent episode. Production is still going forward smoothly, though considering the state of the world at the moment, it's unknown when new episodes will return.

I enjoyed "The Rumble for Ragnarok!" overall, particularly the anime-esque conclusion (with Dewey overpowering the villain). There were some sweet moments. And I felt very bad for Huey when he was co-announcer -- until he figured out how to do it well, of course. :)

I suspect that the original plan was for new episodes to air in July. Given the current pandemic, I would not expect to see new episodes until September, though chances are that there will be lots of new episodes in the Fall if things pan out that way. The first seven episodes of the season were -- for the most part -- strong!

Hmmm... season 3 was announced back in September 2018. Why aren't we getting an announcement for season 4?

I think it's a hint that season 3 is the last. I mean, the show moved back to Disney XD for season 3.

The show being dumped back on the secondary network is worrying, but season 3 also premiered during the pandemic, and with all the uncertainty that comes with it, it may not have made much sense to announce a renewal at this time. Season 3 didn't even meet its original premiere announcement of fall 2019, so might as well wait until you have a clearer idea of what is going to happen before announcing anything.

Season 3 was never announced to premiere in fall. Francisco Angones mentioned on Tumblr during the season 2 finale that Disney wants to release episodes of its shows in bursts (whether in bombs or airing episodes consecutively for a few weeks).

You're right it just said " season 3 coming 2019", although one would assume at the time that it would have been in the fall for obvious reasons. Also, not sure what Frank said about the way S2 aired on Disney Channel is relevant here. They aren't doing that anymore and he said on twitter that this current hiatus was originally intended to be a mini one but the pandemic changed things, so it has had an influence.

Can't they ever not come across a problem that makes these hiatuses even longer?!

Random Rings: Big Hero 6: The Series / DuckTales "Baymax Helps Launchpad"

My theory. Launchpad broke his phone so badly it now picks up calls from alternate universes. That's pretty much the only way a crossover between these two shows could believably work. ****.
