COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic

We're now at 512 cases in the USA, with 21 deaths.

Remember, the real threat comes in an overwhelmed healthcare system; individually speaking, most people who contract the virus will recover.

But given that the majority of the deaths are elderly, and I'm speaking only in "worst case scenarios", but I fear this could be what kills off the remaining members of the "Greatest Generation" (aka those that fought in World War 2, born roughly from 1910 to 1927) and the "Silent Generation" (aka the generation that fought in the Korean War, born roughly from 1928 to 1945).

Which saddens me to think about. :(

Until yesterday, 233 Italians had died of the coronavirus, but 133 Italians died in the last 24 hours, so now it adds up to 366.

Okay, NOW I am getting worried

You mean 366 dead.

Woops, typo. Changed my post.

Oh dear, my country has been affected by coronavirus.

Am I the only one who thinks that some people are overreacting? I know I’m not going to stop doing what I will normally do and I live n the Seattle area for crying out loud! There is a rock and gem fair coming next weekend and I’m still going (unless it gets canceled). My friend I was going to go with backed out, but she is elderly with a low immune system. Her concern is justified, but why should I stop going out when I’m a perfectly healthy young adult?

In Portugal, everyone is overreacting. They bought masks in excess when, in reality, even the fabric can propagate the virus even further!

Portugal update: all schools, movie theatres and the like shut down in Felgueiras and Lousada. These two are in Porto (district). It's like three quarters of an hour by car away from where I live.

There's also the concern about mask shortages. Here in the U.S., the Surgeon General has noted that such a shortage would be bad news for those who really need masks:

At least Braga (well, most of it) is still safe - at least for now.

Because you could get the disease and unknowingly spread it to others who AREN'T healthy. It's not all about you or your inconveniences. We are all in this together. We have to be for the most vulnerable members of society.

I have heard that masks are useless for most people, because they need to constantly be replaced and are ineffective against the disease anyways, and there not only aren't enough masks (which are made in China) but not enough of the fabric needed to make the masks (also from China.)

The only thing the masks are good for is if you already have the disease and are trying to prevent spreading it to others. Otherwise, you're better off simply washing your hands a lot and not touching your face in public.

No doubt about it. The coronavirus is the new AIDS.

Hard times in Italy, especially the red areas, but not only

Conte's measures including the closure of cinemas, aggregations, events, discos etc. and in the red areas, bars and restaurants have to be open only between 6:00 and 18:00. In the rest ofthe country, bars and restaurants have to guarantee a certain gap between each table and person.

I feel like many countries are not serious enough about this. We belittled its effects too.. until it was too late

Sadly, some people in Italy are still not able to get how serious the situation is, including some who tried to escape from the red areas before the measures came into effect

Hand sanatizers etc. now cost a fortune, in Italy
There are lot of memes for that too LOL

I feel really concerned for Italy, meanwhile here, there has been a Coronavirus death 10 miles away in Wolverhampton, and now there's a case at one of the hospitals (the largest one in the area) where my mom works at.

Important Edit to prevent misinformation: The UK government is planning (as in the current situation will change in 7 to 14 days time) for anyone with a mild-respiratory illness (including the common cold) to self-isolate.

The number of infections here has risen to 39. There are 339 suspicious cases.

What I find really strange is that Turkey hasn't had a single reported case, especially with a population of 82 million people, and one of the worst hit countries - Iran actually borders Turkey, I know the border is closed, but still.

Until Sunday Bangladesh was the largest country by population not to have a case. Guess the DRC now claims it.

News from The Weather Channel

Canada got its first COVID-19 death at British Columbia this afternoon, and all of the St. Patrick's Day parades got cancelled in Ireland.

Currently having 16 cases at my local town.
