It completely "struck out".
I didn't appreciate the generic "this special is based on a video game" bits. That, and the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic-style sarcasm was bad enough, but the worst parts were the fact that it was spons...er, "presented" by Dave and Buster's (a chain of "barcades"; as in one of those places you have to be 18 [or 21; don't know which, and I don't want to know] to get into), and as it turns out, it was nothing more than a glorified, 11 minute trailer for an upcoming new Backyard Baseball game. Sure, she (forget her name) learned that we make our own luck, but that ended up being irrelevent thanks to this "animated special" being a glorified trailer. If a trailer is all they wanted to do, why couldn't they have just done that?
People complain about certain TV shows being "toyetic", or glorified TV commercials. This so-called "special", however? I say show people this the next time they criticize things like Transformers, or My Little Pony, or He-Man, or Barbie, or Kamen Rider, or Pretty Cure or something like that. At least none of the TV shows or movies (bolded for emphasis) in those franchises directly advertise the actual toys they're based on. Both the TV shows/movies and commercials for the toys/etc. themselves are clearly separate things, regardless of the criticism the overall franchises get.
Going back to this "special", I'm guessing they were trying to appeal to both "brother and sister" and "mom and dad", but IMHO, thry failed miserably. In the end though, it felt like everyone involved in this "special" didn't even bother trying at all one way or the other. Again, if they wanted to do just a trailer, they should have just done that, instead of this so-called "special". Oh, and they should have gotten a different sponsor; one that's (obviously) more family friendly.
