The Weekend Box-Office Ongoing Discussion Thread

At one point I wondered if TS5 might slightly underwhelm and if Lightyear indicated some contentment with the series in addition to bafflement at such an odd tangent, but it had been pretty clear for a while that wasn't the case and it was no surprise this had a huge opening. I suspect it won't have quite the legs of Inside Out 2 but we'll see.

Also no surprise that nothing else made much of an impression this weekend, though Obsession is still ticking along. I guess Disclosure Day's second weekend could have been worse, though it could have been better too.

I think that’s relatively good for Disclosure Day considering it’s an original property (legit this time, not even based on a novel!), and this is arguably the first time Spielberg has gone for a traditional Spielbergian Summer Blockbuster since War of the Worlds 21 years ago (Ready Player One was released in March, and Indy 4 I would argue relied on nostalgic appeal in a way his films traditionally didn’t), and his name doesn’t resonate as much with people under a certain age; Chris Nolan is probably closer to what Spielberg used to be than Spielberg is now, and we’ll see how The Odyssey does in about a month. To be frank, while I want to see this, I also didn’t think the trailers were all that appealing. That’s subjective of course, maybe others were more intrigued by Emily Blunt making clicking noises then I was.
Well, I've seen Disclosure Day last week and it's actually a lot better than the trailers if I'm being honest with you.

Good to know, I should be seeing it in the next week or so.

As I said previously, I'm going to see Toy Story 5 over the holiday weekend so I'm desperately trying to avoid spoilers until then.

Next week is all about Supergirl for me. I was originally intending to see Spaceballs in theaters too under the Flashback Cinema line, but I opted to watch it on Tubi instead. I made the right choice. While it had a few big laughs ("What's the matter, Colonel Sandurz? CHICKEN?!"), for the most part it's not nearly as good as his '70s work and The Producers. I tend to agree with Roger Ebert on that one.

June 26-28:
1. Toy Story 5 $70 mil
2. Supergirl $38 mil
3. Obsession $9.8 mil
4. Jackass: Best and Last $8.4 mil
5. Disclosure Day $8.1 mil
6. Backrooms $4.3 mil
7. Scary Movie $3 mil
8. BLEACH: The Thousand Year Blood War -The Calamity $3 mil
9. Masters of the Universe $2.2 mil
10. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu $1.6 mil

Ouch for Supergirl. That’s on par with Joker Folie a Deux (but Supergirl will most likely hold on much better). Theres also Jackass. Uhh, yeah…was anybody asking for this? Toy Story 5 fell pretty hard for a Pixar film. It’s obvious this is not going to be another Inside Out 2.

Unless the B.O. picks up, I can see Supergirl being regulated to just the Superman movies. Jury is out for the upcoming Clayface movie. With Jackass, it just seems more like a final farewell plus it only cost $10 million to make. Toy Story 5's drop isn't too bad, all things considered. Obsession is still putting up crazy numbers.

I'm not a Jackass fan in the slightest, but as recently as 2022 they had a film with a $23million opening, so there does still seem to be an audience out there. Apparently this one is at least partly a "clip show" so it might really be one for hardcore nostalgic fans.

It's probably too early to speculate about the DCU as a whole, but I want to so I will! I've never seen anything to convince me there was appetite for a second Cinematic Universe even at the MCU's peak. It didn't work for the Dark Universe, it didn't really work for Fast & Furious, it hasn't really worked for Star Wars and it might not be working here. Of course the closest thing to a second successful universe was the previous DC universe, which might not help. The films might not have been well liked or profitable, but a lot of people still saw them. More people saw Black Adam (internationally) than have seen Obsession so far to put it in some perspective.

Still I think having a low-mid budget film in the wings (Clayface) was a good move. Even if it doesn't work out I think it's worth a try. I always thought the Dark Universe should have tried something similar.

There's something about seeing kids cry after they mess up big time that really gets to me. One can definitely feel bad for Layla.
