"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

They brought out spin doctor TOM tonight. It’s not that they didn’t get a new show, it was an intentional and tactical choice so they could move up Blue Lock since the World Cup is going on!

And of course, a big chunk of the idiot viewerbase will eat that excuse right up.

With the recent news on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim having their anniversaries being celebrated with a documentary next year, how do you suppose Toonami will handle its 30th anniversary?

Probably another story event like The Intruder and the intro of Tom 7?

If nothing else, they will probably give us a packaging refresh.

Oh, they DEFINITELY don’t want to do one of those anymore. The last one was pre-merger and it was 2 episodes. They probably don’t even have the budget for it anymore. Especially if we’re bringing a new TOM into the scenario.

I was waiting for Adult Swim to release the cable login locks on Rooster Fighter and watch it free on streaming whenever they were going to do that, but instead of removing the lock, they just removed Rooster Fighter episodes entirely from their website,
Rooster Fighter. Why would they remove Rooster Fighter so quickly when shows usually stay on the site for two years and usually eventually remove the cable login locks at least for a few episodes.

Wow, that's pretty quick that they got out the broom. I wonder if this is what happens with all their originals from now on.

Housing Complex C, Uzumaki, Ninja Kamui, Rick and Morty: The Anime, and Lazarus are all still on the Adult Swim website. My guess is that their contract with Viz was very short or something.

I believe they made similar compromises to land Bleach.

While it’s unfortunate for those who fall behind, I think it’s the right course of action to prioritize the main cable block and have side things like on demand available to sacrifice if necessary. Cable rights are some of the least desirable, so targeting those specifically should open up more content doors.

We know from past events that Demarco does not know how to act in a professional setting, so I don’t think it’s too far fetched to assume his mouth was the cause for Crunchyroll turning away from Toonami. And with as many years have passed since this first happened, I doubt it ever gets resolved.
Exactly how bad is he?

The Crunchyroll founder/former CEO just launched an anime licensing market that's meant to cut through the red tape a little. TV/VOD and FAST rights are listed as available for most titles.

I don't know if this would make anything easier for Toonami or if they'd even be interested. Of course, CR themselves aren't involved, but there's Aniplex, Toei, TV Tokyo, etc. I have the feeling the majority of its uses are going to be people trying to license merch. Still, it's a new potential licensing option.

I'm going through their catalog right now and it's mostly stuff that's out of its prime, but they do have Spy x Family and the MHA Vigilantes spinoff. Could they cut through CR to get those?

Well, SpyXFamily season 1 is still past its prime just as season 1 of Tokyo Revengers and Blue Lock were past their prime. Dan Da Dan was pretty much the only acquired Toonami show that was kinda close to streaming. I could see them put in half decade old SpyXFamily episodes.

Just one example, he went onto a live stream meant to represent both AS and Production IG wearing a T-shirt that said “F**K RACISM” in huge letters, uncensored of course. And then was confused and upset about them blurring his shirt on stream.

We also know he has an inflated sense of Toonami’s worth in the market and would try leveraging a Toonami run of a show as some kind of benefit that warranted discounts.

I want to be optimistic, but down in the FAQ section, they mention rights are territorial. Given the chokehold Crunchyroll has in the US, I’d wager very few of these options are available in the US.

But, they also make a point of saying every show listed has independent rights and restrictions, so maybe something in the pile could be grabbed by Toonami.

Toonami doesn’t really have many options for things that are relevant. Blue Lock and Revengers aren’t struggling because they are old, it’s because they are boring. I think Spy X Family would be a good shot in the arm for the lineup if it was possible.

Thanks for the reminder. As much as I like Toonami, and how De Marco brought it back, he's been an albatross around its neck. He absolutely refuses to skip filler, had a mindbendingly stupid expectation that One Piece would do well just plopped on a random arc. It did very well at first but then the filler reared its ugly head and a few weeks of glorified clip shows killed all momentum the show had ratings wise and it was cancelled and only brought back because for some INSANE reason Toei is BIG on tv deals. Like its a miracle The second run had a more solid beginning and its still on. One Piece came back but it was not thanks to DeMarco.

I want to believe he wouldnt be as stupid to reject any new shows or at least promising bargains, but I doubt it.

Oh, he is. We know for a fact he has rejected shows he does not personally like. And we have also heard through the grapevine that he rejected SAO GGO because he wanted to virtue signal about gun violence. But then on the flip side, he would show bias towards shows he DOES like, even if ratings metrics said the audience wasn’t as enthusiastic about them. One Piece, Gundam, etc were all ratings black holes, yet he continued to get them because he liked them.

These days? Maybe things are different, given how infrequently they actually can land shows. Like for example, there used to be a strict ban on any sports shows, but now we have Blue Lock. So it does seem like they better understand they can’t be as picky as they used to.

This isn't a good example of him how bad he can be unless he pounded the ground like a baby during the livestream...

Why are people acting as if DeMarco is still running the block? I thought that a different person took over as head of Toonami's programming months ago. I've never been the fan of treating him like the problem with Toonami regardless, but this just seems especially excessive to me.

A recent article revealed he and Manning still, but informally, work on the block even though they're not supposed to be anymore but yeah, Gil Austin is the one officially in charge of the block right now.

Doesn't this quote from that Collider interview imply Kim is the new showrunner, "So Kim will acquire things for linear and talk to Gill and Jason about it."? I know Kim is a controversial figure in Adult Swim history, but she introduced the world to Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Inuyasha, so she's done some things right.

No, I think that only implies she is the lead on acquisitions. Like she's the one who pursues shows to air on Toonami. The headhunter. Because of her history / resume, I suppose between the 3, they felt she had the most contacts / experience with talking to these studios.

I have another theory as for why Johnny Bravo is neglected by CN nowadays. Putting aside the basic concept, it's the retools that made the show chaotic.
I might be the only one who cares but why is Scooby Doo basically unavailable everywhere? Netflix has only Mystery Inc and the two James Gunn movies. Tubi has What's New and Where Are You. Meanwhile HBO Max has basically nothing. I've been itching to watch the classic Scooby Doo direct to video movies lately and they're nowhere to be found outside of purchasing them on sites like YouTube.
Last night started watching a new adult animated series, a Netflix original that is basically the succesor to Big Mouth.

What is so great? Despite being a 18+ show, they actually bothered to give it a Romanian dub :ack::eek:
