Is there any chance of an uncut U.S. release? Who has the rights?

As far as i know it's a Bandai Visual property however i doubt they have access to it as a result of a legal dispute which has meant that no more Macross can be licensed for US distribution.

Back in 2001, Animeigo tried to licence DYRL after their original release of tv series but failed. ADV tried licensing Macross Zero in 2004 but again no luck.

So no Macross DYRL, Macross Flasback 2012, Macross 7 or Macross Zero.

Ah, then I must find an alternative. This sounds like the same type of crap whyich has kept me from Miracleman comics. It sucks to be a U.S. Macross fan evidently.

I think it all has to do with Harmony Gold's stance that they have all distribution rights to anything Macross. Bandai Visual, ADV, or any other anime licensing company can't release anything Macross unless they've been given the green light by Harmony Gold. This dispute has been and probably is still raging between the original japanese licensors and Harmony Gold with no end in sight.

But miracles can happen! Nobody thought Gaogaigar could get licensed due to the dispute between TAKARA and the japanese show producers.

Harmony Gold knows that Robotech rules and Macross drools. ;)

The current release isn't uncut? What got left out?

.

I thought AnimEgo had a good job distrubuting them here in the US? or released a few.

I also thought DYRL came here in the US long ago when robotech was popular? I know they got the Macross II The Sentiels movie by Manga.

Yea, who knows when 7 or Zero will get here, i know Zero finished up a couple of years ago.

Speaking of rights, i know the rights of Macross/Robotech has switched so many times its insane, i have a Newtype issue of them talking about the rights for like 3 pages and in one quote someone wrote "man, cant anyone keep thier hands on this series, its so crazy". Ill have to find that issue in my box in my closet.

DYRL was released several years back under the title Clash of the Bionoids by some company under their "Just for Kids" label. It wasn't in any way desirable.

Yea i heard about that, and im possitive its the same company who did the first 6 episodes on VHS which are pretty rare.

I wonder how much censoring they did on that film, how horrible to think...

Isn't the battle over the music rights another thing keeping Macross 7 from being brought over stateside?

It's not so much that the rights are in disarray, so much as that they cost way too much. Couple that with the near universal rejection of Macross 7, and the cost is not worth it, even if they could secure the series.

I tried watching an episode of Macross 7. I seem to remember cringing a lot before stopping the madness. Is that the one with the bozo who demands people listen to him play his music?

It is the music one, yes. I saw a bit of it. It is kinda annoying until things pick up, but it definately has it's own funky style. No way it'll ever make it over here though. It has the same problem as Legend of Galactic Heroes. The licensors want way too much money for it.

DYRL is in licensing hell for perpetuity. There are subs out there, I've seen one, but I don't know wher to find them.

Aside from Macross and DYRL, I can do without any other Macross series or movie. Everything else was total crap. Plus was decent for a while, as was II, but Zero and 7 were just down right terrible.

That's the one. You can see why ADV isn't in a rush to get the rights.

Mr. Kawamori pretty much jumped the shark when 7 started, and Macross Zero suffers from much of the same supernatural mumbo jumbo. Music mattered in the original Macross because it was a case of culture shock, not because of any mysterious superpower.

Bandai Namco Filmworks announced Do You Remember Love? will be geting a new 4K remastered Blu-ray Disc set on January 29, 2025. The 40th anniversary release will include English subtitles. The release will include both a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc version and a regular Blu-ray Disc version in one package. Each version will have both both the 1984 "Theatrical Release Edition" and the 2016 "Complete Edition," based on the 2016 Bandai Visual Blu-ray Disc release., exclusive box art by the film's character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto, and a 24-page booklet. Pre-orders start November 3. The limited first edition sold by the A-on Store, Premium Bandai, and Cho Jikū Fan Club Tamashii services (and theaters showing the 4K remaster) will include a recording script "signed" by the character Lynn Minmay, a replica of the "Macross * 84 - Summer" campaign badge, and Mikimoto's illustration from the film's earlier laser disc release on an acrylic board.

The 4K remastered version will also start playing in 40 Japanese theaters on January 25, and a limited first edition of the Blu-ray set will go on advance sale in those same theaters on that same date.

Where would you recommend importing this from? I see it at a bunch of sites — amazon.co.jp, Amiami, PlayAsia, YesAsia, CDJapan, etc. — but I don’t import from Japan a bunch and would definitely appreciate any insight. Thanks!

I've used CDJapan before a couple years ago before the pandemic. They are around $74 for this Macross but if you want to play it safe, I'd go with FedEx but that will probably bump up the cost to the 90s. They're good had no damage on my products but they have an odd 25 day policy policy (for example, if you pre-order this today, in 25 days they charge your card). Amazon Japan won't charge until is it shipped but right now it's going to be $80-90 depending on how strong the Yen is between now and the release date. Sure it could lower between now and the release. Amazon Japan, you'd think you can just use your Amazon account but you have to start a whole new account. Aside from that, never had an issue with them and they seem to care more about stuffing the box/envelope to protect what I bought in the past. I haven't bought from the other sites you mentioned.

If you're a fan of super long shots and Amazon Japan isn't blocking its 'relatives' from import then this might show up eventually under an import listing on Amazon US but the price could be bonkers. And of course, I'm sure you have one already but you'll need an all-region Bluray/4K player (i.e. a Sony UBP-X800M2 multi region, I think a Playstation 5 can play both). edit: And I've heard some people say 4K discs aren't region locked but I never looked into that.

Thanks! I wound up going with CDJapan. I've ordered from them before, but mostly just to buy CDs. :) (And to import a Kamen Rider UHD collection, which is tons of fun despite the lack of any subtitles!)

Region-locking with UHD discs is more complicated than it really ought to be. There are no region restrictions in the format itself, and any attempt to institute region locking is out of spec. But it's possible for discs to read the region/country code of the player itself (since there has to be one for Blu-ray) and roll their own region restrictions.

It's a very, very tiny percentage of discs, but it does happen. (GKIDS' Weathering with You is one example.) Scenarist, whose software is very widely used for authoring UHD discs, has a post about it on their site. There's a thread with a list of affected titles on blu-ray.com's forums.

Has anyone here ever taken a tour of the Cartoon Network Studios building in Burbank, CA before it closed? I really wish I could have :(
To celebrate the fact that I got three weeks off from work for rest, I watched today the latest installment in the separate Minions series of movies. What I loved was the unique logo variation of the Universal logo, which was akin to the plot taking place in the late 1800s

Nicktoons in the US has recently aired something that no one expected: an AI generated ad for an overpriced plush toy.
Not everything from DC and Marvel comics needs to be more like the adaptations.
