Old-School CN Nostalgia Thread (1990s)

I recently saw this pic.

Does anyone have any information on the event? It sounds cool, but I never heard of it before.

I've seen it months ago on the site where it was initially posted.

Did you saw it on my Tumblr? (shameless plug). The post do mention the source with more info at the Van Partible (Johnny Bravo creator) site.

Only posted photo of the launch (featuring Ted Turner):

That's yours? Sweet. :)

Thanks for sharing all of this. I like seeing Ted stand next to a giant Fred, and Top Cat in the back. I wish more info or footage could be easily found about this event, but what we have is cool.

Actual footage of the launch is unavailable.

I remember some months ago I found an old newspaper article that described the event, but I can't find it right now. However, I found a related comment at YouTube from someone that worked on some old interstitials:

Todd Ruel said:
Regarding Cartoon Network, I still have a VHS tape somewhere of the actual launch of the network outside on the front lawn of the plantation building. It's not what you saw at launch. It's what actually happened. Ted Turner pushed a giant red button. There was supposed to be an explosion. Didn't happen. He pushed it again and again. But what you folks saw if you were watching back then was an edited version in which everything went perfectly. (I'm sure heads rolled later.)

This playlist contains a bunch of Pick Your Fridays bumpers - more bumpers than the ones CartoonNetRulzz posted on his YouTube account.

Here's a rare fact: Cartoon Network HQ was broadcast to Minsk (capital city of Belarus), terrestrially, for six months (March 24th-September 24th) in 2000.
That frequency was later taken over by TV Center (Russian channel from Moscow) and has been airing a local channel (BelMuz TV = Belarusian version of Russian cable channel Muz TV) since 2009.
I found that info on a Russian website.

Zapowiedzi CN - YouTube <- CN Poland promos from circa 2006 featuring a Polish Eds 60 promo.
Oh... this may be from that summer, because of some kind of promotion to draw characters and win:
-a CN goodie bag
-a TV
-a DVD player
and the Eds 60 promo from the City era is also included here too. I hated it when Eds 60 changed its look when the City look came along...

CN SEA info on events, 2001:
"Cats and Dogs Marathon
It’s raining cats and dogs as Cartoon Network presents a huge Cats and Dogs Marathon. With a galaxy of world famous dog and cat television stars, the channel is proud to present the biggest animal line-up since Noah’s Ark."
"Character of the Month -Dino
CN_Dino.jpg
Airdates: Starts June 3, Every Sunday in June,
15:00-16:00Imagine living in the prehistoric times…where the newspaper is a slab of rock, porcupines double as hair-combs, people shower under elephant trunks and take their pet dinosaurs for a walk! June’s Character of the Month features the greatest pet dinosaur of all time – Dino. Over the next four weeks, the Flintstone’s purple pet will be taking you to Bedrock showing you that the Stone Age rocks!
The lovable pet dinosaur is memorable for providing Fred with a slobbery greeting upon arriving home from work. Dino is also wonderful protector for Flintstones daughter Pebbles. Despite Dino’s insatiable love of human food (having been known to snatch bronto steaks when left unattended) he is generally good-natured and a simply adorable member of the Flintstones household. In June, Cartoon Network pays tribute to him.

"MIKE, LU & OGAirdates: Starts September 8 at 11.30 am & 6.30 pm

It's time to party as Cartoon Network delivers 13 brand new episodes featuring popular island inhabitants Mike, Lu and Og. The program revolves around three kids living on an uncharted island. American exchange student Mike Mizinsky finds herself living among the natives of the obscure island paradise of Alboquentine. On the island, Mike forms a relationship with two of the young locals. She adores Og, the quiet, five-year old visionary who possesses a thoughtful, einstein-like mind. On the other hand, Mike's big-city mentality often clashes with the personality of local royal, Princess Lu. Princess Lu is extremely self-centred and has a very "regal" perspective. With such different personalities, the trio often clash, as each tries in their own way to have the others to go along. They may drive each other crazy sometimes, but when these kids set their minds to a given task, they are a formidable force."
Source: Mega TV site, 2001. Mega TV was owned by Malaysian terrestrial channel TV3. It was a cable provider and it existed from 1995 to 2001. It only offered a few channels and TV3 closed it because of satellite provider Astro becoming more and more popular and led to its closure.
This information was taken from Mega TV's website before they went broke.
P.S.: On an older Mega TV site (from 2000), I found info on a special called Boating Toons to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. Unfortunately, as we don't have any members from the SE Asia region at present, it remains a mystery to me. (Probably it aired boat-themed episodes of shows?)
P.P.S.: Heh heh heh... I bought the word Alboquentine back to the Internet!

Once again, I make a quest based on rare CN HQ bumpers from the past. I sterted this earlier this year and only one bumper was found. Some of these were used on CN CEE or CN UK.
1: Cartoon Network Cinema bumper, ca. 2002. My mind says that Cow was holding an actual torch instead of Chicken, but it was probably my mind. Same as an already existing bumper posted by Romanian YT user OldMcBarney, but the text read "CINEMA" and not "TOON FILM". Probably used until 2005? (RA, Á97HU, S, J, CNR, M)
2: Kaleidoscope-themed bumper, featuring various HB stars. Used around late 2004 or so. At the end, we see the CN logo, but with two of the letters swapped (CAROTON NETWORK). Later, it changes to the correct text (CARTOON NETWORK). Used on Boomerang as late as 2011, just by editing the end. (RA, S, J, CNR)
3: Tom and Jerry-themed bumper, also set to classical music. I only remember seeing it on Boomerang, and the look was reminiscent of the 2002 "Blocks" look. (RA, Á97HU, S, J, CNR)
4: Promo for the 2004 Christmas marathon called "Blocks Around the Clocks". It had C's rotating in squares, als reminiscent of the look CN was using at the time. The background was white. (RA, S, J, CNR)
5: Promo for the 2005 Christmas marathon. Don't remember the name, but it had a song by The White Stripes (Hardest Button to Button, where we see the band multiplying in streets). The promo looked a bit like that music video, and it featured scenes from a show with a character appearing four times, along with the four-note repetitive tune played by a guitar riff. (RA, S, J, CNR)
6: Bumpers and promos for Cartoon Carnival, hosted by a Bloo impersonator. Used in the fall of 2006. FostersFriend doesn't have those bumpers... (RA, S, J, CNR)
7: Footage from VBirds: Perfect. I only remember watching it once when I was sick, sometime in 2003, and, if my memory doesn't cheat, it was similar to Dance Dance Revolution. (S, J, CNR)
8: HiHi Puffy AmiYumi promo from late 2005. It was a generic promo and it was part of a series called CN Muzik. It was the only one in the series and was a music video with the music being the HHPAM theme song. (RA, S, J, CNR)
9: This is a very ancient (?!) bumper, but it seems that it aired around 2000 or 2001. It was a bumper set on a blue/purple/pink background with some white flowing lines. I also remember one line, which was just Mojo Jojo saying "Are you talking to me?! ARE YOU TALKING TO ME?!". (TTW, RC, S, J, CNR)
10: Footage from Toon FM. I can only find a British promo for it. It was set in Tokyo and was hosted by Brak (according to the promo) and Johnny Bravo. I don't remember more, but I thought that it wasn't the European JBVO (without the requests part and set in Tokyo). (TTW, RC, S, J, CNR)
11: Footage from Viva Las Bravo 2005. I liked the bumpers used at the start of breaks. (CNR, Á97HU, RA, S, J, M)
12: Footage from Viva Las Bravo 2006. Only one promo is on the Internet. (CNR, Á97HU, RA, S, J, M)
13: Cartoon Network website promo from 2002-ish. It featured stills from the first European design and the Play section from the Brazilian website! (S, CNR)
14: Footage from Pick Your Fridays, but in high quality. (RA, S, J, CNR, Á97HU, M)
15: Promos for the various incarnations of Cartoon 60. Several promos already exist in other languages.
16: Series of promos for CN shows. The only one I can find is the one for Robotboy, but I assume that there was a HiHi Puffy AmiYumi version of it. To see the Robotboy bumper on YouTube (because VBOX7 is very slow outside of Bulgaria), search for "Robotboy bumper OldMcBarney". (note: it has the logo of Xiaolin Showdown, which never aired over here. Also, the "show select" sound effect is used in the intro of 2 Days and 1 Night)
(RA, S, J, CNR, Á97HU, M, NB)
If you want to add more details about these bumpers, here's the key:
Red Arrow: 1 through 6, 8, 11, 12, 14, 15
Ákos97HU: 1, 11, 12, 14, 15
RegularCapital: 9, 10
thetellyweb: 9, 10
szjdfgs: all 15
CartoonNetRulzz: all 15
Moleoman: 1, 11, 12, 14, 15
josie: 1 through 12, 14, 15

It’s actually from the ‘Yorkiddin presents Cartoon Network’ block on Yorkiddin, a kids block on Yorin. It’s a poetry competition for Sinterklaas, so it aired from late November until December 5th. (But I don’t know which year it was)

After CN NL was replaced with CN EMEA on August 1st 2001, Turner made a deal with Yorin to air a Cartoon Network block. (CN EMEA was not available in as many Dutch homes as CN NL and most of their shows aired in Dutch, while Yorin was available for everyone and they aired the cartoons in English with subtitles. That’s why Yorkiddin was more popular than CN EMEA) The block premiered in November 2001 and aired until late 2003.

Yorin is the same channel that aired a Toonami block in early 2003. (But they removed the block before 2004 started, together with the CN block…)

Yorin closed down back in 2005. Unfortunately, it was never available in Belgium :(

And by "spelcomputer" he means a GameCube...
CN HQ referred to Wii's as a "games console" two years ago I assume.
The GameCube came to Europe in 2002. At least we have some proof on the date.

Here's a genuine rarity: the CN PH website when it was still airing CN SEA! It's only a website for SE Asia's version of CCF: Cartoon Network - Cartoon Cartoon Friday
Also, the EEnE picture was recycled by the Korean CN:
mini_b_1388653221.jpg

(in Korean it means "Three Friends Named Ed")

I almost forgot that this year marked the 15th anniversary of Ed, Edd n' Eddy. Does anyone have any good memories of the show that they'd wish to share?

I remember Ed, Edd, n Eddy being heavily promoted before it premiered. When it first aired, I thought the voices and animation were rather odd, but as it progressed, they got a lot better along with the show in general and it became one of my favorite series airing on CN at the time and is one of my most favorite modern animated series.

Is that Joan Cusack voicing Jessie in that Toy Story Papa John's commercial? If so, it sounds rough. Woundn't surprise me if it wasn't, though.
