Chuck Jones famously said, “The Coyote could stop at any time, were he not a fanatic.” Indeed, in a world full of food to choose from, only a fanatic would fixate on a nearly impossible to catch road runner zooming at light speed. At the least, you’d think Wile E would notice virtually none of the traps, gadgets and gizmos he orders from the Acme Corporation ever seem to work as advertised.
In an upcoming HBO Max movie just announced today, though, The Coyote finally seems to have realized what’s going on here isn’t entirely fair. He’s wasted millions of dollars on Acme products since the late 40s, and has nothing to show for it. Now he wants it all back…so he’s filing a lawsuit!
Coyote Vs Acme is the title of this dramatic legal drama, focused more on a small-time lawyer than the Coyote himself. This lawyer, yet to be named or cast, has been down on his luck for a long time, and when the gaunt figure of Wile E. darkens his doorstep, he sees a kindred spirit. He agrees to help the Coyote take on Acme in court.
But Acme doesn’t just have anyone defending them…they have Peacemaker! John Cena has been announced as the lawyer defending Acme against the suit (as of yet, the only cast member we know of). Worse yet, the plantiff lawyer recognizes Cena’s character as his former boss from the law firm he got kicked out of. Awkward!
Coyote Vs Acme is based on a satirical piece that ran in a 1990 issue of The New Yorker (talk about random). Samy Burch is writing the screenplay version, Dave Green (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows) is directing, and Cena’s old pal James Gunn will serve as producer alongside Chris DeFaria.
There is no release date for Coyote Vs Acme as of yet. Don’t count on the Coyote winning, though — I mean, when does he ever?
