What becomes of the brokenhearted? Who had a dog that’s now lethargic? Supergirl needs to find some peace of mind, and she needs help…which she’s going to find by helping others. That’s the overall message (and Jimmy Ruffin melody) behind the latest trailer for DC Studios’ film, which we admit is a big improvement on the previous few.
While previous trailers gave the impression of yet another jokey superhero romp with lasers and explosions, this new look at Supergirl suggests a more emotional, honest and raw story. Bitter over witnessing the destruction of her home planet, Kara Zor-El spends her days goofing off, getting wasted and partying with her dog Krypto…until the fateful day the dog is shot.
Not SHOT shot (this isn’t DC’s remake of John Wick)…more like poisoned. A time limit given on a loved one that pulls Kara out of her drunk stupor and finally forces her to Do Things. It’s on that quest to find the antidote that she runs into Ruthye Marye Knoll, an alien girl who’s also had an unpleasant run-in with the film’s villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills.
Krem’s ultimate goal isn’t clear yet (maybe he simply likes making others miserable), but Kara and Ruthye are after him, and maybe they can get the help of…Lobo? The Main Man is the most selfish biker in the galaxy, and he’ll only help others if there’s something in it for him. It’s not new information that Lobo is in the film but it’s still a mystery what his exact role will be in all this.
Supergirl is based on the Tom King graphic novel Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, and some people familiar with that book are posting their reactions to this trailer and saying “Oh good! It looks like they’re keeping in that really tragic scene from the story!” I don’t know what they’re talking about, and I’d rather not know yet (spoilers ‘n all). This trailer does give the impression of a superhero movie that’s not afraid to Go There. ….yeesh, the dog dies, doesn’t he?
Hopefully not. Supergirl stars Milly Alcock as the title character, Jason Momoa as Lobo, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem. The movie opens in theaters June 26.
