Some things are just routine. You go to work. You wash your car. You do your laundry. And if you’re DC, you change your logo.
Above is what DC will start branding its comics with, beginning with DC Universe Rebirth Special #1 on May 25. Unlike the last few, it’s got a deliberately retro punch, and for a reason — it’s nearly the same as the logo they were using in the 1970’s.
The previous DC logo, a bizarre-looking D being peeled off to reveal a C, was introduced along with the New 52 in 2012. DC unveiled the logo with great fanfare and showed how it could be customized to fit any of their characters, like so:
I’m going to miss seeing this at the end of Supergirl episodes, but at the same time…even she can’t pretty up a corporate symbol that reminds you of a scab being peeled. Nope, it had to go.
DC has been restless regarding its logo over the last ten years. The bullet shield of the 80’s and 90’s (which is still a fan favorite) was retired for a flashy one, but it reminded people of dishwashing soap instead of comic books. It then got replaced by the scab, and now we’ve come full circle.
The big question is how the new logo will be animated when it appears in front of Suicide Squad this August. The previous two have come to animated life via halftone dot patterns not unlike the coloring used in oldschool comics. DC could be planning to do the same with this.
