Venom from first Sony movie

Venom, Sony’s strongest non-Spider-Man Spider-Man property, is set to premiere its third installment in theatres this November. Originally set to be released in July of 2024, production was delayed due to SAG-AFTRA strikes. Sony announced a new release date of November 8th along with revealing some new cast members.

Venom Let There Be CarnageOriginally a Spider-Man villain, Eddie Brock became Venom when he bonded with an alien symbiote. Venom’s menacing appearance and powers that mirrored Spider-Man propelled him to popularity in the 1990’s. Venom quickly became one of Spider-Man’s most well-known adversaries and has appeared in many cartoons and video game adaptations. He was first played in live action by Topher Grace in 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Although Grace’s Venom failed to wow audiences, Sony knew there was still potential in the character. The Venom in the comics stepped out of Spider-Man’s shadow and became an anti-hero, and the movies followed suit.

The first Venom movie starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom and directed by Ruben Fleischer debuted in 2018. Its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, was directed by Andy Serkis and hit theatres in 2021. Kelly Marcel, who wrote both movies, will be directing the third Venom in her feature directorial debut. Tom Hardy, who shares writing credit for Let There Be Carnage, is returning to co-write the third movie. Marcel and Hardy are also producers of the film along with Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, and Hutch Parker. Venom 3 began filming in 2023, but various Hollywood strikes halted production. With the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, production on the movie resumed in November of 2023.

Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock has been most recently seen in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Venom reacts to Spider-Man No Way HomeHome. While the post-credit scene to Let There Be Carnage teased a larger role for Venom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his No Way Home appearance was only a brief cameo.

Although plot, characters, and the title of the film itself remain under wraps, casting has been announced. Clark Backo, of The Changeling and Letterkenny, is a recent addition to the movie. It had been announced previously that the movie will feature Juno Temple, of Fargo and Ted Lasso. Chiwetel Ejiofor, who superhero fans will recognize as Doctor Strange’s Baron Mordo, has also been cast. Their roles have yet to be revealed.

Juno Temple at the 2024 SAG AwardsJuno Temple, who appeared in both The Dark Knight Rises and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, is no stranger to theatrical adaptations of comic books. At the 2024 SAG Awards, Temple talked about shooting Venom 3. She told Variety “It’s been a wild, wonderful ride”.

The third Venom, which is currently just being called “Venom 3”, is produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel. It will be released through Sony Pictures on November 8th.
