The first “season” of Black Clover, which consisted of 170 episodes airing from 2017 to 2021, was one of the last of its kind as a continuous long running battle shonen with no season breaks. Although initially thought of as a poor mans Fairy Tail, the series eventually established a strong fanbase of its own and is now generally regarded as one of the better series to come out of the 2010s. Because it ran for so long with no season breaks, it caught up with the manga and Studio Pierrot put it on a long hiatus. We now know that a “season 2” is coming “soon.”
That’s literally most of what has been announced and “soon” could mean next year or three years from now. We do know Crunchyroll will still premiere the series, which means that we will at least keep the original dub cast, which is a good thing when beloved dub casts get replaced when a new company is in charge of dubbing. There is no news on if the show will continue to be a continuous long-runner or take season breaks like every other battle shonen series of the 2020s (except for One Piece). Studio Pierrot has shown what they can do when given season breaks as the recent seasons of Bleach have been incredible. Some fans might want season breaks to allow for higher quality visuals, while some might want the old approach so we won’t have to wait as much for new episodes. We also now have the following statement from the creator of the original Black Clover manga Yuki Tabata:
“The production of the long-awaited new anime season of Black Clover has been confirmed! I’m beyond ecstatic going into the new anime season after the super-passionate movie that came out! Thanks to all of you, Black Clover is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year! I definitely plan to keep this hype going! I want fans from Japan and all around the world to enjoy the powered-up anime that’s going to be brought to you by the most awesome anime production staff! Thank you so much for supporting Black Clover!”
On top of that, we now have a teaser trailer:
For those who missed out on Black Clover, the series is about a boy with no magic who dreams of becoming the Wizard King. Somehow, he obtains the power of an anti-magic sword and joins the Black Bulls, a group of misfit magic knights. They fight the forces of evil. The series was arguably the second most successful anime of the late 2010s, with My Hero Academia being the top dog. It ran on Adult Swim’s Toonami block as well as streamed on several platforms, such as Funimation, Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu.
We don’t know how long the wait will be, but at least we know there will be a “season 2” eventually.
