We’ll explain what that headline means in a bit.
We somehow didn’t get to covering the Avengers Doomsday teaser that was released last week, but that’s okay, because another was released today and they’re so short that we can lump them together. Last week’s confirmed what’s been anticipated for months: that the Fox X-Men are in the film, somehow. The teaser featured Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops. The latter is the only character who gets to do something action-y in any of the four videos, though it’s only for a brief glimpse.
The second and more recent teaser is focused on the Wakandans and the Fantastic Four. Laetitia Wright as Shuri, Winston Duke as King M’Baku and Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) and Namora (Mabel Cadena) meet up with Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, and introduce themselves to each other.
Now here’s where it gets puzzling. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo posted a message on Instagram that claimed these videos aren’t what they appear to be. “What you’ve been watching for the last 4 weeks…are not teasers. Or trailers. They are stories. They are clues…Pay attention.” Any guesses on our end would probably be wrong as none of these seem to be connected in any way, except for the obvious fact that these heroes will meet up to fight a common enemy.
Altogether, Avengers Doomsday will have a massive cast: confirmed are Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Florence Pugh as White Widow, Kelsey Grammer as the Beast, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and the return of Robert Downey Jr., but this time as Doctor Doom.
The next preview of Avengers Doomsday is set to hit during the Super Bowl on February 8; no doubt a 30-second truncated television trailer instructing you to find the full version on the Internet, as is the style these days. The movie will be released December 18.
