We have our Captain Marvel: actress Brie Larson. The announcement was made by Marvel at SDCC today. In addition, Larson tweeted the above picture as confirmation, along with the caption “call me Captain Marvel.” Yes, ma’am!

The Captain Marvel movie was announced in 2014, and director Kevin Feige announced they would be using the female version at that time. “Captain Marvel has gone by many names in the comics, has had many people who’ve inhabited that costume and used that power base,” he said. “I want to make it very clear: This hero’s name is Carol Danvers.”

Danvers is the current Captain Marvel in MCU canon, but she didn’t always go by that name. For a time she went by the handle Ms. Marvel, but of course that’s somebody different these days. Danvers inherited the Captain Marvel name in 2012.

Captain Marvel almost had a cameo appearance in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but they hadn’t cast the character yet. Larson’s next picture is Kong: Skull Island, coming in 2017.
