In anime fan speak, it is a common idiom for an anime perceived as being low quality to be referred to as a “trash” or “garbage” anime. The funny thing is that this series is literally themed around trash and the title literally translates to “Legit Trash” and is themed around garbage. We have the ninja anime Naruto, the pirate anime One Piece, the wizard anime Fairy Tail and Black Clover, now we have the garbage anime Gachiakuta.
Protagonist Rudo loves trash, anything dirty, or dingy, or dusty. So much that he risks his life stealing trash from a landfill filled with armed guards so he can salvage trash and repurpose it. Having a landfill that kills dumpster divers does seem like overkill, to be honest. Rudo lives in a floating city for the upper class while the lower class lives in “the pit.” A mysterious masked man murders Rudo’s adopted father and frames him for it. The punishment for murder is to be thrown into the pit, which is filled with monsters made out of trash.
After being thrown into the pit, Rudo is introduced to the cleaners, an organization that fights the trash monsters. Their shonen powers come from their attachment to objects. Enjin uses an umbrella, Riyo uses a giant pair of scissors (specifically she uses he feet to wield the scissors), and Zanka uses a stick-thingy. In addition to trash monsters, the Cleaners fight human villains known as Raiders. As one can predict, Rudo joins the Cleaners.
As this is a battle shonen, fans expect flashy battles in this genre and Studio Bones delivers. Studio Bones can be hit or miss, but this series brings the over the top battles expected. The anime is based on a manga by Kei Urana, an assistant for Atsushi Ohkubo, the creator of Soul Eater and Fire Force. Urana has developed the same penchant for creating quirky offbeat settings for battle shonen as Ohkubo. Battle shonen fans were certainly drawn to the show by the creatively quirky premise and flashy action scenes spread on Youtube and Tiktok.
I keep wondering when the battle shonen genre will exhaust all ideas as it feels like every major premise for battle shonen has already been taken, but this series came in and proved there is still creativity to be found in this genre that’s been around for over forty years. A great deal of battle shonen series merely recycle ideas from what came before. Gachiakuta absolutely obliterated its competitor Tougen Anki as the most fan acclaimed new battle shonen franchise of Summer/Fall 2025 with a MyAnimeList score of 8.23 compared to the latter’s mediocre 6.85 score. That series was about oni going to oni school to learn how to fight a secret government organization that hunts down and kills oni. The characters have blood powers like Deadman Wonderland, the misunderstood monsters being hunted by the government comes straight from Tokyo Ghoul, the special school premise is straight out of Blue Exorcist, Jujutsu Kaisen, Soul Eater, Welcome to Demon School Iruma-Kun, and countless others.
Essentially, Gachiakuta is the creative interesting series while so many other series recycle ideas from other shonen series. Okay, that is ironic that I’m complaining about recycling when Gachiakuta has a literal pro-recycling message against the wealthy wastefully throwing away stuff stuff in a landfill that could be re-purposed or recycled. The commentary about real life environment and class issues bring a little bit of flavor to the series even if the message isn’t really the point of the show as the cool fights are the main point. If you are a battle shonen fan, Gachiakuta is an easy recommendation. It is streaming on Crunchyroll.
