To commemorate making the Academy Awards’ “Best Visual Effects” shortlist, LAIKA has released a short featurette covering the challenges behind one of most complicated scenes in Kubo and the Two Strings: a battle aboard an origami boat during a rainstorm. Kubo and the Two Strings is the first animated feature in years to reach the shortlist in the Best Visual Effects category.
Kubo and the Two Strings is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. It’s also on our 2016 Holiday Gift Guide, which means you should totally go get it if you don’t already own it. You’ll thank us.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Kubo and the Two Strings was the first animated feature to reach the shortlist for Best Visual Effects. 1993’s The Nightmare Before Christmas was a nominee for the award (losing the award to Jurassic Park).
