Last week, newly installed Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav became the most infamous, ridiculed man on the Internet when he announced plans to merge the two completely incompatible streaming channels of HBO Max and Discovery+, showed off a series of tone-deaf slides dividing shows by gender, and canned a $90 million Batgirl movie that was just about done.
At the same time he also cancelled Scoob! Holiday Haunt, a sequel to the animated movie that would have been one of HBO Max’s attractions this Christmas….and it gets even wackier with reports that the movie’s music score was still recorded AFTER the fact, because WB had already paid for everything. Great money management skills, Dave!
What we didn’t get out of Zaslav last Thursday were any answers about the fate of our favorite WB shows. We said we’d bring the news to you as it turned up, and we finally have confirmation that at least ONE series is safe from his axe: Harley Quinn.
TV Line reports that, perhaps due to the strong performance of Season 3 thus far, according to their shadowy and unnamed insider spies, “Season 4 is a very safe bet.” That’s not a GUARANTEE that the series will continue past this point, but it’s definitely not a cry of doom.
Speaking of doom (patrol), TV Line also analyzed the fate of every other DC production at HBO Max and several of them are on safer ground than you’d think. They ordered a Green Lantern series a while ago, and it’s apparently still in production, and so is a Black Canary movie related to Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Blah Blah Blah). James Gunn has assured his Twitter readers that Peacemaker Season 2 is still happening. As for Doom Patrol and Titans, the latest seasons of those shows have not premiered yet, so no decision seems to have been made…though there are rumors DP is calling it quits voluntarily with Season 4.
Only one DC production was confirmed to be dead, and it might have been dead prior to the merger: Strange Adventures, an adaption of the ancient sci-fi comic, was announced in 2019 but is not moving forward.
